“I have an older powered sub woofer without RCA jacks to connect. Previously I've connected as indicated on rear of the sub...running R&L / speaker wire from receiver to panel on sub... then panel on the sub out as indicated to the speakers. Still work?”

I had my old Yamaha home theater receiver hooked up the way you describe and I used this method of connection with this new Yamaha RX-V385 and it works just fine.
