It will work with existing wires but based on my experience you need to use a mechanical chime and not the digital ones. The digital ones never stop ringing or doesn't ring at all.

The wires that run to the doorbell are low voltage and can be very fragile especially if they have some age on them. Remember, although they are covered by a doorbell, they are still exposed to the weather elements and can become brittle and crack over time. When I installed both of mine, I pulled some more wire out and trim it back to fresh, clean wire. Great product. I love it.
