I love this movie. For many of us, the topic of slavery in the United States is not something we would like to rehash but the way this movie presents it, blew my mind. This will make anyone cry and cringe; I guarantee it! I was not familiar with the story 12 Years A Slave before this movie but I rushed out to read it after seeing this movie. What a story of both triumph and sadness.

This is a timeless movie dipicting a forgotten era that molded our nation as Americans. A true history lesson from a different vantage point. The main plot is gripping. You are left speechless as you follow a long forgotten culture of when freedom was not free.

Pictorially, 12 Years a Slave is a reminder of one of the most shameful aspects of American History. As such, the film reminds viewers that humans have the capacity for evil. At the same time, Northrup's character demonstrates a fighting spirit of one who overcomes that should be celebrated by all. The movie is worth watching and merited Best Picture.

I actually Read The Book years ago. It Was Compelling. About Five Years Ago I Saw A Movie s On The Same Subject,It Was alright. This Current Movie With Lots Of Money Backing. And Brilliant Actors Gave All New Meaning To A Great Story. This Is Probably. One Of The Best Movies Ever Made. Truly The Actors Made this Movie. Great Director. It Was almost Reality In Your Face.

Overall, highly recommend this movie for anyone interested in seeing a film, based on a true story, that keeps your attention throughout the entire movie. Historically based, this did so for me as I am a history teacher. While I can not use in class (due to some language, nudity issues), it tells a great story that just so happens to be true. Highly recommended!

This movie is sad but uplifting. Sad hat a man was kidnapped and sold into slavery. No one should have to endure slavery period...it's just wrong. But encouraging that he survived and got his freedom back. It also shows that although there are a lot of evil people in the world, there are still some that will do the right thing.

I was skeptical about this film because I am black and thought of it as "another movie about slavery". However, I was blown away by the great cinematography and unbelievable acting in this film. Not only is it a great film about the subject of slavery but its a great film, period! The fact that its a true story just adds to the emotional effect of the film.

I think 12 Years A Slave is an excellent film. The subject matter is disturbing. But, it is a story that needs to be told and shown. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie even though it made me quite sad at times. I highly recommend this motion picture to everyone. I applaud all the actors and actresses and film crew involved with this period piece of film making.

When I first heard about this film I must admit I didn't expect much. I mean how can you beat The Color Purple? But this movie was one of the best films of the year! A real eye opener to how slaves were treated during that time and the sympathizers that helped them. A dark part of our history that every history class should show their students.

Steve McQueen's powerful slavery drama is worthy of its many accolades, including Best Picture. The cast is superb across the board, and the movie doesn't shy away from the brutality inflicted on the slaves by their owners. Fox's blu-ray disc is a little light on extras but still offers up a fantastic picture transfer. Well worth your time and money.

"12 Years A Slave" is an excellent movie that gives a very truthful look at slavery in the 1800's. The fact that it was based on a true story made it an even greater movie. I would recommend it to anybody, especially young African-American teenagers or young adults that don't have a clue or have lost sight of what slavery meant in American society.

I was interested in this movie when I first heard of it. Unfortunately I was not able to see it at the theatre. I decided to wait for the DVD but I first watched the original version. I thought both movies had their merit but the movie should have been longer to develop the story more. Besides that it was a very good movie and a story to be retold.

Very good acting big stars in this movie.about how terrible times use to be and still are. This movie will show you how really and bad times were for African Americans. It’s gotten better now but lots of work still needs to be done

This movie is based on the true story of a free black man who gets abducted and shipped south to be a slave. He endures horrible treatment. What is surprising that he would not have tried to get free and endured this for over 12 years. It's hard to watch movies like this, but these things really happened, so I guess they are good to remind us.

It's gut wrenching to watch this dark and true story of a freeman thrown into slavery. The acting is right on the mark . Direction is impeccable as well as the cinematography. It makes you feel as though you are living the story. Steve McQueen has proved masterful at his story telling abilities. Any one who's a history fan must see this film.

I work in the film industry, and worked on this movie. It was a hard movie to film, largely due to the locations and time of year that we shot it; however, I think it's an equally hard movie to watch, only because it's an account of actual events. I find it to be an amazing story of the evil that people are capable of, but also the power and resiliency of the human spirit not to give up hope. It's nice to work on projects that have some social value, even if there were some blood, sweat & tears involved with the making of it. This is one I'm actually proud of.

Most movies that are about slavery is either too boring or too fake. There are only a few exceptions to this statement. This movie was just like the book. As you watch you see the words that was written come to the screen. I enjoyed the actors that were chosen to play in this movie as well. Not too harsh, but not at all soft. Great movie to watch with the family. Great movie to watch with friends of all races. It shows how far we have come as a nation and how far we still have to go in race relations. Until we become blind to color will we prevail as a nation!

This is a film that earned every one of its awards with a mighty punch. The cast, the story, the pure raw/grittiness of emotion in this film is so spot on that you feel as though you're present in a time capsule in history. Have watched this film numerous times all with the same ferver, disgust and yet hope.

The director Steve McQueen did a brilliant job on this movie.The actor Chiewetel Ejiofor was very good as a free man then sold into slavery.The actress Lupita Nyong was excellent and you must see her acting in this movie.It was a history lesson to be learned in this movie. Brad Pitt and Benedict Cumberbatch were powerful acting too.

This movie depicts some of the horrors and life struggles that American slaves faced in this country during the times of slavery. The movie did an outstanding job portraying the pain and the frustrations and how some overcame this period. An excellent movie and a perfect base for a family conversation/discussion.
