Similar to the classic film Seven Samurai, this movie focuses on a small group of group of samurai trying to defend a small village in rural Japan. It is loosely inspired by true events. The first half of the movie concentrates on plot and characters, while the second half is non-stop action. The acting is quite good and I really liked the cinematography. The choreography of the action is also good. The special effects for the most part are solid except for the cgi flaming bulls that run through a town. But this movie was working with a small budget so I can't be too hard on that. Overall.good movie. Especially if you enjoy sword related combat.

The only thing you can expect when going into a Takashi Miike film is the unexpected. The über-prolific Japanese auteur has helmed over 70 theatrical features, TV shows, and straight-to-video offerings since 1991—that's 3.5 outings a year, including the span between 2001 and 2002, during which he made a baker's dozen worth of films—and he's dabbled in just about every genre, from westerns (Sukiyaki Western Django) and kid movies (The Great Yokai War) to yakuza epics (Dead or Alive) and my personal favorite, the nutso zombie-musical-claymation-family drama/comedy Happiness of the Katakuris. Of course, he's best known for pushing the boundaries of extreme cinema in the ultraviolent Ichi the Killer, the sadistic Audition, and, most explicitly, in the taboo-busting Visitor Q, which voyeuristically revels in incest, necrophilia, and "lactation sex." Miike frequently courts controversy, and this makes it doubly unexpected that his latest film is so comparatively traditional. A remake of a 1963 film of the same name, 13 Assassins fits neatly into the classic samurai movie mold. Instead of overturning the genre—as his reputation would suggest—Miike has simply reinvigorated it, to great effect. If films like Seven Samurai, Sword of Doom, and The 47 Ronin are your particular cup of green tea, 13 Assassins will go down just as easy.

Renovated samurai classic for new movies and interested.

For fans of Martial art or Samurai, this movie is a gem!! It has elements of The Wild Bunch, 7 Samurai, Dirty Dozen, and many more great films. The historical aspect is top notch and highly intriguing. The fights scenes are truly savage and feel so real. The characters are very well fleshed out, considering there are so many, and the backstory is more than compelling. It's brilliantly dark, and so much so that you desperately want them to complete their mission to stop a bloodthirsty tyrant-to-be before he can bring ruin on the country. A MUST SEE !!

13 Assassins is a movie for any Samurai film enthusiast. As with most of the good ones in this genre, the plot is built around political intrigue. Plenty of action and good characters.

Miike’s samurai masterpiece is wonderful. I like the option for traditional or English dubbed if my eyes are too tired to read.

One of the best sub-titled movies ever made. Even though I do not speak Japanese, the story tells itself with the actors energy.

Movie is about 13 samurais who become united into ridding a sadistic war lord to prevent him from overtaking the throne and dividing the country into a civil war. Movie isn't for faint of heart. At times, it's brutal and disturbing to watch.

This is one of director Miike more widely appreciated more accessible films. That being said the gore is still pretty prominent. It’s just his style.

Masterful direction by Takashi Miike and wonderful yet brutal action makes this a fantastic film.

He and 12 others commit their allegiance and lives to help save Japan and fight for the honor of their people. Action, graphic violence, some nudity. English Captions.

Top of the line picture & sound quality! A movie made with a elegant build up that leads up to a unforgettable climax. One of the best samurai films made in modern times; the political side of being a soldier you don't see much, and with that climatic action sequence that is some of the best ever orchestrated. Great film!

This is one of the best samurai movies I've ever seen. Really love the fight scenes. This is a movie about courage and commitment. I hghly recommended for samurai fans.

Overall not a bad film. Great action, lots of things we have all seen many times before, a few that we haven't. You can't go wrong if you just are looking for kick butt martial arts with lots of anime style blood letting. Enjoy!
