Unique entry into the war film canon, mostly due to its inspiring use of cinematography. Light on dialogue, heavy on evoking visceral emotion through the graphic visual carnage on the bloody, muddy battlefields of World War I.

"1917" is a hard-hitting film about two British soldiers sent on a dangerous mission to save 1600 men from certain doom. It's a huge technical achievement, yet a fully immersive WWI epic. There are also some great performances at the center of the film. McKay and Chapman disappear into their roles, absolutely pulling us into the story. Speaking of story, there isn't much of a narrative. I basically described the entire story in the first line of this review, nevertheless "1917" is fully cinematic. The film definitely has an impact as well. General Sherman (of the Union army during the Civil War) has been quoted as saying, "war is hell" and Mendes does not ever diminish this message. It truly offers a vision of what it would be like for young soldiers wandering their way through war. Cinematographer Roger Deakins shoots a visually impressive picture that feels like it's moving seamlessly as one piece. The shots and visuals have a propulsive energy that will delight viewers. The logistics of the camera give everything a raw and startling immediacy. The effect of this camera gives us a great sense of the day-to-day of WWI. Thomas Newman's score is definitely just as gripping and an impressive achievement as the cinematography. Some viewers might be exhausted by this experience and find it impersonal, but if you give yourself to the rhythm of director Sam Mendes' direction you will be rewarded with a rich work of art that also feels like Mendes' grandfather is sitting down with us and telling us a story of his days in the War. The 4K disc itself is filled with immensely clarity. The presentation is resplendent. The color grading is vital and full. This is definitely a high grade 4K release and a must own.

A haunted sojourn through the post traumatic, shell-shocked nightmares of two young men forced to forge their bodies and spirits in the grisly, gory crucible of trench warfare and close quarters combat. 1917 is a stunning portrait of our species at its ugliest, most brutal moral apex. The indifference and cruelty of combat is a bittersweet realization, because to understand it is to understand true darkness. But understanding true darkness is a philosophical necessity to understanding true light, true goodness. There's a kind of poetry in motion with 1917 as we bear witness to the struggle of young men trying to do good and remain good while perpetually pummeled by a constant barrage of the worst kind of violence and human malice. 1917 has the stylistic furnishings of a polished Alfonso Cuaron film. In fact, 1917 is somewhat like my idea/vision of what The Thin Red Line would have been like if it were directed by Cuaron instead of Mellnick. The cleverly edited tracking shots make for a genuinely powerful tool in building a mounting tension that's so palpable, one could taste it by swallowing air. This is some of the best tracking camera work I've ever seen in a movie, comparable to the direction of photography in the action movie 'Bushwick,' bested only by the deft showcasing of camera skill in the Japanese zombie cult mega-hit flick, 'One Cut of the Dead.' The choreography, patience and insane amount of time dedication required to pull off these indelible picture sequences is to be commended. In fact, that was the case for 1917, which snagged up multiple awards for its incredible editing and cinematography.
