One of the best WW1 movies I have every seen, a Great Movie.

Not a whole lot to say here. The movie is excellent. The visuals are excellent. The Atmos is excellent. The simplicity of 2 men being on a mission to prevent fellow forces from walking into a trap makes for a great story. I also love the style of cinematography in that most shots were done in one take. There are very few cuts in this movie, and some shots were even entirely CGI to tie together two long takes. I’m willing to bet you probably didn’t notice entire CGI shots because they are that good. I didn’t notice. The contrast was superb and stylized so well to fit the mood, alongside vintage and dull but still saturated colors. Primarily shot in 4.5K and mastered in a real 4K digital intermediate, this disc is a rarity. A digitally shot movie that actually has the detail of 4K resolution. And it certainly shows. Not a lot of fast-action in this one, so Atmos effects are used sparingly, but the effects that are there are amazing. The plane flying overhead right before it crashed was one of the most boomy and thunderous effects I’ve ever felt with our system. Nothing bad to say about this release. If you’re considering buying it on a 4K disc, stop considering and just do it. It’s excellent. I normally refuse to pay more than $15-$18 for my 4K discs, but I had no problem dropping the full $25 for this one. Worth every penny.

This is a review of the 4K UHD steelbook package of the film 1917. This is not a review of the movie itself, although the brief overview is that it is a creatively filmed experience, that lends itself to war historians and action film aficionados alike, with innovative use of a limited lens set to create an almost seamless feeling across the entire duration, despite some clever transitions between takes. The 4K presentation of the film is spectacular, with a visceral and pounding soundtrack if you have the audio equipment to do it justice. The HDR is not the most overdone or eye-catching thing that I have witnessed, but it did not feel like it was particularly lacking, like some films with poor grading and mastering choices (look at you, Star Wars films in 4K). The steelbook is proper Scanavo stock, with tasteful art for the outer and inner case. If you're a fan of the film, this version of the 4K release has been on sale often enough that it could easily be worth waiting to get this edition, although the regular packaged 4K has the same content. If you're a fan of steelbooks, this is definitely the one to get. If you're looking for the best 4K and HDR demo material, this likely won't be the best option to showcase your home theatre.
