This movie is an absolute classic. Love Kubrick. Would’ve been better with a digital code, but still, looks great.

2001, made in 1968, was "ahead of its time"

Visually, 2001 is a tour-de-force, nearly 50 years old now (premiered in 1968) but still alive with imagery that stimulates the mind in many ways. Kubrick's detailed direction keeps it going. The problem is the lack of dialogue (nothing for the first 30 minutes) and a complicated unsaid understory about the slow 4 million year evolution of man vs the rapid rise of computer "intelligence" and the power to make decisions. The final flight through the universe has never been repeated in the history of film. Watch it - and watch it again.

Good quality but no digital code

It's a little thing (to me) but it seems crazy not to include a digital code for this title. I have heard that there were complaints about the codes not being for the 4k version. So apparently the solution was to remove the digital codes entirely? Ridiculous. This release is really nice otherwise. I just thought it should be mentioned that there is no code. The listing actually doesn't say there is one on closer inspection, but I'm sure that many people like me have never had a 4k bluray that didn't come with one before

Reference level Video for an iconic movie

I want to give this a higher score, because the movie is so iconic, but if you have seen it, you know the drill here, it is one of the slowest openings to a movie ever...it drags on and on. If you are patient, you will be rewarded with an iconic, fantastic movie. The video quality of the 4k transfer is amazing. I am talking reference quality level video here folks. The attention to detail when doing this transfer takes away all excuses from other teams that seem to lack the ability to take an older movie (1968) and achieve this level of mastery. Inky blacks abound, with insanely minimal picture noise, while the video is razor sharp. This is why I got the 4k version! Color quality is astounding and brilliant. Seriously folks, the video quality has to be seen to appreciate what I am merely stating in this review. The audio is great, but if you know the movie, you know that audio was used sparingly throughout much of the film in order to create a sense of isolation. When the audio comes through, it is of very high quality, albeit taking a back seat to the superb video.

    2001 A Space Odyssey 4K Version

Everyone has heard about or has seen 2001 A Space Odyssey. At times it is hard to follow and the ending left people asking what just happened. 2001 A Space Odyssey was released in 1968. In 1968 the special effects were amazing. Now in 2018 redone using 4K technology the special effects really stand out. But if you didn't understand or like the 1968 version, the 4K version will not change your mind. But if you were not around in 1968 and have never seen it I recommend that you purchase this film and decide for yourselves. It is worth the money. Arthur C.. Clack wrote 4 Space Odyssey novels, 2 were made into films 2001 A Space Odyssey, 2010 Odyssey Two (The film was called '2010 The Year We Make Contact'). The last 2 novels 2031 Odyssey Three and The Last one 3001 The Final Odyssey. I read the other day that a Cable network has bought the rights to 3001 The Final Odyssey and plan to make it into a mini series. I am hoping that the 2nd of the 4 books made into a film 2010 The Year We Make Contact is released in 4K also. That film answers a lot of questions that were left where 2001 A Space Odyssey left unanswered. A great film especially in 4K.

    Sci-Fi Classic

Fifty years later this movie has aged well and still looks amazing. The Blu-ray price has really dropped, maybe in anticipation of the 4K version coming later this year. If you have a 4K player you might want to wait. The Blu-ray looks very good, but there are bits where I wonder if the picture couldn't maybe look a little sharper. The commentary by the two stars of the movie is OK, but doesn't really offer much insight. There are people who have studied this movie for years and even written books on it who may have had more to contribute. The sequel, 2010: The Year We Make Contact, is also available on Blu-ray and worth it if you get it cheap.

    Science Fiction Cinema Landmark

Anyone who is a sci-fi (there was a time when fans hated that abbreviation) movie lover has seen this Kubrick film. It doesn't have the best story ever. It's plods along at times, simply for viewers to soak in the scenes of tech and special effects. The director gives drawn out shots to give a believable, even possible space environment. Maybe that's is its greatest accomplishment. Aside from the trippy bookend imagery. The HDR release adds to the revamped "crispness" of the movie. Worth buying it if you love only half the shots in 2001: A Space Odyssey.

A lot of these film to 4K conversion movies have significant noise artifacts which I find distracting. However this movie is very well done. There is small amount of noise through the entire movie but it was at low enough levels that it was not distracting. There are only a couple of short scenes where this sun is directly being imaged by the lens that looked really poor. (Hence the 4 stars instead of 5). A friend didn’t even notice until I pointed it out. This is a great 4K HDR version of a classic. I highly recommend it.

The film is problematic and enigmatic. A special beginning and middle, only to let down and confuse at the end. A slower burn than Blade Runner, pacing isn't optimal. But fans of the film will be treated to perhaps one of the finest restorations seen on UHD. The detail is stunning, and the colors vivid. The sound is defined, crisp, and evenly mixed. After seeing this, one wonders why such restoration effort isn't common among older films.

Be warned.... If you are not familiar with this movie, rent it before buying it. It's very boring. But...... that's not to say it's not good. This movie is actually quite beautiful to behold and, a cinematic marvel. It's not for everyone. To get a better understanding of this film, check out Wikipedia. As far as the picture and audio quality, A+ for both. The best this has ever looked and sounded.... Easily!

The movie itself is a bold artistic undertaking. Some people get it, some people don't and I fall somewhere between understanding nothing and being Kubrick himself. Some parts may put you to sleep but when you wake up you'll be greeted with a stunning film transfer that looks as if it was shot recently. Highlight was the scene you see on the cover and the ending sequence.

I would recommend just as it was passed unto me by cosmic wave. I was lured also to this movie from the hunch it featured a scene of primitive man however it wasn't the movie I realized it to be. I will look for it still. A movie featuring a captive primitive man under glass, o well. It continues on in a part duex. That will impress in collective of this tale of space. I minused one star due to my belief the ending was capped and to me caused a distant reality yet worth seeing and especially in its retro and modern show.

I have not watched this movie for at least 20 years, film grain was low to medium, close ups were great and the space ships looked used not brand new, great affect. The movie is a lot more symbolic than I remember and not much talking, great musical score. This movie makes you think about how life started, a little slow moving compared to today movies. Excellent.

I love this movie! It is a true classic sci-fi film. The remaster helps but the source was old and it's not as crisp and clear as many newer films, but it still looks pretty good on a big screen.

This classic sci-fi movie is a foundation to all science fiction media. While there are certainly things I could care less about, and the drawn out pace, the movie is truly integral to the genre. If you have seen any movie with an AI gone mad, there is likely a reference to Asimov's Three Laws and 2001's HAL. Its also fun to just listen to the theme that played out this great conquest of mind over something so trivial as a bone. Glad I got to add this to my collection!

If you like the movie then the visuals will pop on a 4k screen. I haven't seen this movie in at least 10 years and I had forgotten how long some of the space scenes were. They do drag on a bit. It's neat to see tablet computers so accurately predicted in the late 60's. That's something I like about Science Fiction, the prediction of the future.

UHD/HDR adds a bit to this 50 year old film. The movie saddens me a little, though, at the way the future turned out. It's also very slow for modern viewers. (Fortunately, I'm not one.) I still fast-forwarded through the psychedelic bit at the end of the movie. Goes on for 3X as long as needed. (Sorry, Stanley Kubrick!)
