Too bad 3DR isn't staying for the long haul

Wow, just wow, this is my 4th or 5th quadcopters and I must say, the user experience is by far the best. I've an RC enthusiast before probably the 3DR founder(s) were born and knew what I was getting myself into with the news that they are getting out of the business. After going through the entire process and be up and flying within just hours (and most of that is just charging batteries), taking breath taking flying videos, I must say the naysayers are probably not giving them enough of a chance with some initial missteps. Yes, customers are fickle and retail is hard. But we are talking a computer controlled quadcopter that hold altitude stably and relays video back to the operator all in a seamless step. These type of activities usually takes days if not weeks before everything is working from end to end. I should know, I have two other lesser quads that are still work in progress due to one deficiency or anther. And they cost easily twice more than the fire sale price that the Solo is now going for. And that's not even counting the extras like the battery or the gimbal. If you can setup a wireless network, this is about as difficult as that to be up and flying and taking your own (impressive I might add, due to the stable flight controller) aerial videos in no time. From what I can tell, they've address most every complaint the early adopters had to go through and now it is just a seamless experience out of the box (including the software update that you must do). Get one, you will be glad you did.

I've been looking into drones since June 2015 (when this one was released), and finally purchased this one in November after much research and finding so many others that are out there. I have never flown a drone before so this was a new experience and it was by far an amazing one. I looked at so many drones as far as camera and smoothness and other things offered with other drones and there just wasn't anything like this one! It is built to update (not built to be replaced when a new one comes out). I am very impressed by this drone and it is the only one out there that I would recommend (even more than the $3000 Inspire1). You can use this with 0 experience and get professional video without having past experience. This really is the first "Smart Drone."

This is my 2nd Solo because my first one crashed due to human error. Now since I know better, this drone has done nothing but great for me. The range sucks, but you can always upgrade it and it'll be perfect!

I love my Solo. It's very easy to fly and I use the selfie shot a lot to get a quick capture of my friends.
It's worth it to get the gimbal also. It's a little pricey compared to the alternatives but the ease of use is worth it. Plus the if-your-drone-crash guarantee is comforting. I've had Phantoms that crashed and got nothing but run-arounds.

I would give the Solo 5 stars if the gimbal was released at the same time. It's a must have for drones since any video without a gimbal is unusable. That said this drone is very easy to fly and looks great. GPS acquisition can take a few minutes, but it makes it very easy to fly and maneuver. I've never owned or flown a RC quad and yet I feel comfortable flying this thing high up in the skies. It's expandability makes it future proof so you won't be left in the dark months or even years later.
It's more expensive than DJI and I did consider the phantom 3 pro, but it's camera can't be upgraded and it doesn't have all the smart shots that makes the Solo more dynamic in aerial cinematography. Plus I've heard and read that their customer service have been much easier to deal with than DJI's. Overall, I'm satisfied with this purchase and the gimbal will bump this review to 5 stars.

Got the whole package with the gimbal, extra battery, propeller, and backpack for $399. Great deal for my first drone. Get the Gopro4 at Costco, much cheaper.
I was nervous to fly it since it was my first time but it's actually pretty simple and fun to fly. As long as you have the gimbal and gopro, it is very easy to fly. Without the gopro for visual, then it will be a bit challenging for first time. I didn't even need to look at the drone. I just use the visual from the gopro to fly, it move where I wanted it to move.
I do recommend that you COMPLETELY setup the 3DR Solo, the Gopro, download and setup the app, and charge the battery to full before flying. Set the drone at slow speed and the minimum height in the beginning until you get a hang of it. Take off and landing is simply, do watch the tutor first.
WARNING! You must register your drone with the FAA. Only cost $5 and they give you a FA number for you to write on your drone for ID. No test or anything else unless you are registering for work use. ALSO, check to see if you can fly the drone in your area first before you buy. I live in the city so there are not many places (close to none) I can fly at. Too many airport and airspace restriction around the bayarea. I'm can only fly indoors for now on manual mode (don't need GPS for this, read manual) :-(

So much fun and easy to use. Very stable in wind. The controller feels like a video game. Easy to charge battery's and put on propellers. It comes in a nice case to travel with. Gopro is easy to use with and takes nice videos. Will be even better when gimbal is available.

Returned dead after a week

I had 2 very short flights the first day. Put the Solo away until the weather cleared a few days later. Back out to fly and received the 'Magnetic Interference' warning. Moved to multiple locations with the same results. Nothing I did would resolve the issue. Finally did a factory reset and same results. Contacted support who quickly told me to return the unit.
I did my research and knew before purchasing that there was a potential for issues. Read through the many forums out there and you will see. Fly aways ARE REAL with the Solo and have been confirmed by 3DR as a GPS issue for at least one of the incidents. 3DR gave him a new Solo (see picture of TXT from 3DR to the user) . The Apple App is prone to crashing a lot. An update has been reported as being in the works for more than a week. It still hasn't materialized. As others have said the gimbal is nowhere to be seen and is continually delayed. The GoPro mount that the Solo comes with out of the box is good so at least you can utilize video if you want. The downside is you cannot control the camera functions from your iPhone or Android app. You have to have the gimbal to do that.
This was an OK launch for 3DR, but could have been much better with additional testing. Right now I would not recommend anyone purchase this until the bugs are worked out.

Easily the best drone you can buy for $300. Came with extra battery and gimbal. (Extra battery is no longer offered as of this reivew) Flies great despite bad reviews on Amazon and other places. Don't listen to these negative reviews. Out of the box, it was easy to update firmware, easy to setup and easy to fly and control. Lots a great features for this price point. No problems with GPS acquisition like others have reported, etc. The only downside is that the runtime with gimbal and gopro attached is not the advertised 20 mins. It's closer to 13 - 14 mins depending on things. Also, 3DR is no longer in the consumer drone business so getting support and parts may be a little difficult 12-mos down the line.

This thing is as cool as advertised. This was my first done of this caliber. I did a bunch of research and just liked what this had to offer. All the smart shots are easy to use. The online tutorials are easy to follow. This thing can handle the wind and still stay in place. You do not need to be an expert in flight to enjoy Solo. High price tag but tons of fun. The set up takes about an hour but after that just keep the batteries charged and go fly. You get about 20 minutes of flight on a battery. I picked up an extra one and that typically gives me all the flight time I need.

This drone is very easy to fly, together with the hero pro 4 camera made beautiful pictures and videos, we have to wait for the gimbal to be next to have a whole experience in video films.

This drone is now our go to drone. It is fast with quick response time, it hovers in place very well, and the smart shots are awesome. This drone was built for the aerial film industry, it allows you to focus on your work rather than flying. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is the long wait for the gimble and lack of answers to when to expect it.

This drone is the cheapest you can find that allows you to do everything (well almost everything) a professional grade drone will do.
Simple to use, hovers in place even in strong winds.
Just FYI, when you start going to Advanced settings be careful of the Fly Home Perimeters as if you don't set these back to Home your drone can fly into "the blue yonder"

I bought this quadcopter for shooting video. For shooting video this thing is amazing. Rock solid in the air, simple to fly, incredible programmable flight features. It takes off and lands with the push of a button and nearly flies itself, so it's great for video and photography. For someone looking for an action drone for zipping around, this probably isn't the one. Supposedly it is one of the fastest in this size, but it's not meant for acrobatics, it's designed to be stable for video/photo purposes. The only downside to this quadcopter is that it is linked to the GoPro 4 which is being phased out.

Best value drone out there, first drone I have owned, I watched a lot of videos about drones before I got this one, but couldn't spend 1500 bucks on a phantom 4 as I will be flying over water, ...eeekkkk....i have been thinking about getting one for a while, at this cheap price I could not say no, bought it to make a video for our company powerboat trips, easy to use, works best with a GoPro hero4, so cheap I bought 2 of them, get a bunch of extra blades as you will crash it but this thing is tough although the blades break quite easy when you crash into things. I would get at least 2 extra batteries. Video is great, very smooth, have done about 3 hrs flying so far....love it..........blade guards are a good idea for first time drone owners like me.

The 3DR Solo drone is a very impressive drone for my liking. This is also my very first drone and I had it flying with ease right out of the box. The controls are very easy to use, feels like a video game controller setup. Although I wish it was a little more competitively priced and included the gimbal in box to avoid the long wait for the gimbal itself. I still give it 5 stars just because it is a treat to fly, I still have not received the gimbal should be about another week to get it. Can't wait to try out the other modes like follow , cable cam, and orbit. Which you dont have access to without the gimbal. All in all it is a thrill to fly, and very user friendly, if this is your first drone or another one to add to your inventory I would highly recommend the 3DR Solo.

Excellent packaging, Easy assembly (minimal), Large instruction sheet with just a few simple steps. Must have Smartphone or WiFi tablet to set up and use. Very simple to fly with a lot of beginner capabilities. Only one confusing step during set up and had to call customer support to resolve, but Customer Support was EXCELLENT. Only drone to buy for a beginner wanting lots of capability, versatility and upgradeability. Awesome product.

I bought this drone for the normal stuff people usually use drones for: flying it around, cinematic shots, and take a peak at your hot neighbor, all the normal stuff. Anyways. I bought this when it was on sale and included the gimbal, extra battery, and extra propellers, otherwise these extra parts would be an additional $380. So I bought this full setup for $499.99. The sad thing is that 3DR has announced they would be leaving the consumer drone market.
This is a great drone but doesn't have all the bells and whistles like the DJI phantom 4 or even 3. It doesn't have an optical flow sensor or sensor for obstacle avoidance. What does this mean you might be asking? Well it means it doesn't do a good of a job of hoovering as the DJI or if you have on follow mode it will just follow and not look out for obstacles in it's path, so it could hit something and potentially be severely damaged. If you can afford it go for the DJI Phantom 4.
The only real thing the 3DR solo has going for it is it's smart cinematic shots which makes it easy for a beginner to take great video shots or pictures with this drone. 3DR made the Solo for this purpose and it fulfills this but it's not as smart as 3DR claims it is.
