Disclosure: I have family all over the UK and was in Northern Ireland during the "troubles" (what a euphemism!) in the early 1970s. I recall being stopped on a street corner shopping by an 18 year old looking British soldier with a machine gun and being told to "keep moving along now." It was not pretty. I once stood on one of the few hills in Northern Ireland where you can see the North/South Border into the Republic of Ireland with the naked eye. It blew my mind that just over that line, there were NO troubles. Think about it. So, I picked up this DVD to see how my mind's eye and the director's eye agreed about "the troubles." And for the most part, they DO agree. The insanity of brother versus brother bloody violence, unmitigated hatred, and political insanity, is very well portrayed and in an interesting way. I can't approach reviewing this movie without my background and am pleased to see people who presumably had no experience in Northern Ireland in 1971 agree that it is a fine film. Expect to be enlightened.

This is a very suspenseful story showing the complicated relationships between the northern irish and English through the eyes of a soldier new to the conflict. I used the subtitles because some of the background music and sound made it difficult to hear all of the dialogue.

Excellent "behind enemy lines" film. Jack O'Connell has emerged as one of the best new actors around (Starred Up, Unbroken). This is just another example of how capable he is of carrying a movie on his own. Highly recommended

This was a good movie, a little hard to understand the English accents at times. It was interesting to see the back room politics of the IRA and the English Army during the time.
