This movie was so good that I had to buy. It’s gritty, & Liam delivers in his tough guy detective role. Story is great on this one, definitely worth watching.

This is a 3.5 to 4 star movie set in 1999 with an old fashion formula detective mystery story line adapted from one of Lawrence Block's mystery novels. Matt Scudder (Liam Neeson), an unlicensed P.I. and ex-cop suffering from his own demons, agrees to help a heroin trafficker (Dan Stevens) hunt down the men who kidnapped and brutally murdered his wife. As Scudder investigates the crime he discovers another victim has been kidnapped. The line between right and wrong blurs as he races to save the the latest victim before she is brutally killed. Blu-ray 2.40:1 format with limited extra features.

Because it was Liam Neeson in the lead, I somehow expected an action shoot-em up. It wasn't quite that! A crime thriller, certainly, and with plenty of gun play to touch my expectations. I enjoyed this modest movie. Liam turned in his usual precise-character performance that never fails to convince me he's who he says he is. There were other notable portrayals but he held this one together. The movie got progressively bloodier, which wasn't easy considering the nature of the crime he was investigating anyway. And the ending was as satisfying as getting that really hard 'burp!" out of your system; not nice but really relieving. I'd recommend this one for a good stint in drama and not-so-good vs evil.

"A Walk Among the Tombstones" starts out as another Film Noir-ish Liam Neeson action thriller. But this movie has a bit more to offer. Neeson turns in a solid performance, backed by a good supporting cast that features Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey) as a sympathetic drug trafficker and a couple of really vicious bad guys. The plot keeps throwing out one-off twists, and there is an interesting AA theme threaded through the story. The movie's slow delivery takes full advantage of the New York City setting with some meditative camera work. This might be a formula movie, but the delivery is good and the suspense is great. Recommended as good entertainment.

This is a film I feel like you have to watch more than once to appreciate it. My first viewing of this left me a little disappointed because I was expecting a typical Liam Neeson movie--action packed and fast paced. A Walk Among the Tombstones definitely isn't that. It's more of a psychological thriller/drama type. There are a few scenes in the movie that are a little hard to stomach, but I feel like all of the actor's did a really good job. It's a subtle film that doesn't hit you at first, but sticks with you after you watch it.

After seeing the trailer I expected this to be in the same vein as the "Taken" series, which is perfectly fine. However the trailer seems to be purposely made to mislead you, this is not that kind of film. The story is interesting enough to carry the movie even without the "Action Badass" elements that have become tiresome as of late. I found most of the characters to be likable enough, though there is a voiceover that really detracts from one of the later scenes. Even though the movie ended somewhat abruptly, I still enjoyed the film.

A Walk Among The Tombstones stars Liam Neeson as a private detective who is hired by a drug-lord to investigate the murder of his wife and what he discovers goes deeper than what he sees. First of all, don't compare this to some of Neeson's latest popular movies such as Taken and Unknown. This is different. It's not an action movie. It is supposed to be a thriller but it is not the kind of thriller that gets you on the edge of your seat. This is more like a drama type of movie.

I am a big Liam fan... This movie had alot of action & adventure in it too... I remember him in "KRULL" from way back in the day (1983, I think) whereas he's a very good actor & you should purchase this Blu Ray from BestBuy for your movie collection especially for "TAKEN" Fans... I would definitely recommend the purchase of this movie at BestBuy to family & friends for sure... The graphics & sound were so much better than in the movies.. The only two other things that can top this is not if I would've brought this movie in 3D Blu Ray as well as WHEN BestBuy bring back "UPGRADE & SAVE" so that I could've saved some additional money on this purchase...

This is not a full-blown action flick so don't expect car chases and Liam popping off the thugs every ten minutes. It takes it's time and let's the viewer ponder for a slower paced but gritty ride. It does have some violent images and acts that will stick in your head. Liam plays the investigator with cool swagger as he navigates the seedy areas of NY to find two maniac serial killers. If you enjoy the thriller genre or true crime stories you should enjoy Tombstones. It's similar in tone with Silence Of The Lambs, Prisoners, Seven. The on location shots of decaying cities in NY really added to the feel of the story.

    Action and Mystery

This movie tends to fall into certain action and mystery tropes, but the composition of the movie hides these tropes to an extent. The flow of the movie is typical of an action movie, but holds the air of suspense that is standard for a mystery. Liam Neeson gives a great performance that makes the down and out officer running a not so legal detective agency relatable to the common viewer. Otherwise a good movie with a slightly predictable plot, but still manages to hold its own.

This movie is what you expect it to be. Liam Neeson plays the quiet private investigator who carries some pain from his past. Of course this type of character is always forced to show their tender side, which happens but not to overly done. The movie follows the normal plot and plays out as expected. However the bad guys are nice and creepy. And if you just want to watch a movie and not think too much. It's a good movie for that and I'd give it a 7/10.

It was a good movie. Kinda film noir i guess. Liam Neeson was very good and the kid TJ was a great character. Felt really slow like a long book if you like that type of movie its great but didn't move fast enough. The characters should have had a little more time and backstory. Kinda rushed into the meat without much backstory aside from the Scudder story. Was a very cool movie and a good watch but could have been better IMO.

This movie is based on a series of thriller books. The first one "8 Million Ways to Die" that starred Jeff Bridges portrayed the same character that Liam Neeson does. Well balanced and likeable character who does favor for people in return for gifts (cash). But the story unfolds when it is a dead drug dealer's wife and Liam is hired to find out, through his wits and sense of an ex cop, who are committing such atrocity acts.

This movie is not the Taken series type of action movie... it is more of a thriller, with some action involved. It was very enjoyable, and did have Liam doing his deductive reasoning to put pieces together to find the bad guys. If you like Liam Neeson, this movie won't disappoint, but don't expect wall to wall fights and chase scenes. I would recommend this movie, and have lent it to a friend to see.

Intense crime thriller based on one of Lawrence Block's novels. In 1999, recovering alcoholic Matthew Scudder is hired by drug dealer Dan Stevens [late of 'Downton Abbey'] to hunt down the kidnapper/murderer of his wife. Aided by a streetwise homeless kid (Brian "Astro" Bradley), the troubled P.I. wades through a seedy underworld as he desperately seeks the killer. Typical Neeson role.

Movie starts out ok. Plot, characters, move in the right direction. My biggest disappointment comes at the end when during the most important scenes are developing, the background becomes so dark, you can't actually see what is REALLY happening! The sound , noises, etc are good, but the picture of the scenes are too dark to see. That ruins an other wise decent movie.

Gritty and terrifying... in a very entertaining, gripping way. Liam Neeson shows depth and versatility in his portrayal of an ex-cop struggling to cope with demons of his past. Dan Stevens gives the portrayal of a drug trafficker a slightly sympathetic bent, showing that although criminals live with brutality and vice, sometimes they are also humans with families...

A Walk Among the Tombstones doesn't try to be what it's not. There is no over the top action, and the story line is plausible. From the outset, it simply aims to tell a story, step by step, and build suspense up until the climax, and in this it succeeds marvelously. If you enjoy suspense, crime drama, or detective stories, you will enjoy this.
