It has a weak display and short battery life. It's the first Chromebook I have owned and don't like it but to be fair I won't include the operating system in the Star Rating as some people are quite fond of Chromebooks. Acer is not a strong brand but I got this super cheap on a Deal of the Day and would not pay a penny more than the sale price.

Acer Chromebook 512 - Wonderful Chromebook

I was looking for a well priced Chromebook to replace my Acer Chromebook 11 that will be 6 years old in September. It still worked perfectly fine but I was informed that after six years it would no longer be "supported" with updates, etc. After researching various options I came across a "special offer" for the Acer Chromebook 512 from Best Buy and, while it is slightly bigger than my old one, the price couldn't be beat. I ordered on line, picked up in store. Very easy. As I am not very tech savvy I thought I might need help from the Geek Squad to set it up however, it was so easy I didn't even have to ask my grandchildren for help!!! I am very happy with all the features of this Chromebook, the screen size is just right, keyboard is a very easy and not too sensitive to touch, and the feel of everything is "just right" for my limited use. I have not used all the features available and am not the best person to give any sort of technical review but "it works for me"!!!

Have two other Chromebooks. So far this one is becoming my favorite. Fast and battery lasts lots longer then the other ones. I have had 2 other Acer computers (Windows) . So far I think their Chromebooks are even better then the Window ones. Does everything I need without having to use windows. Would recommend to anyone that wants fast computer for checking email and surfing the web. Lots better than having to do this on a phone !!

I have been looking for a smaller laptop/Chromebook to use when I travel and for a back-up at home when needed. I like the size and weight of this one. This is the first time I have used a Chromebook and it was easy to set up and navigate so far. I plan to use it for basic surfing and emails. Grandkids have used Chromebooks at school, so I am sure they will be able to assist me with any future questions I have regarding it.

    Good Chromebook

The Acer Chromebook 512 is a good Chromebook for the price. It’s built to take spills and average bumps and falls. The top of the Chromebook has a nice looking design with a ridged pattern, but it’s a fingerprint magnet. I wish it had a different finish so the top of the device will have a much cleaner look. The screen isn’t HD quality, but it does have a matte finish that does a good job in an environment with a lot of light or reflection. The screen is not touch screen, so you will have to navigate using the touchpad or a connected mouse. The Chromebook can only be used in laptop mode. The screen can lay flat, but it cannot be flipped around and used as a tablet. It proclaims that it is thin and lightweight, but it’s average for both. I wish the keyboard had backlit keys. However, the keys have very good key travel and feels good to type on. The trackpad is pretty good. It’s not like MacBook Pro good, but it’s good for devices in it’s price range. There’s a USB-C port on each side so you can plug in and charge from either side. Battery life is pretty good and the processor is pretty fast as well. The speakers are decent, but nothing to shout about. Overall, it’s a good Chromebook for it’s price point and features.

This Acer Chromebook 512 was on sale for a great price. I bought it to replace an older Chromebook that doesn't support Android apps and is no longer receiving updates. The Android apps are more limited than I thought, but with a small SSD there isn't much place to store them anyway. I knew with no touch screen that the usefulness for Android apps might be limited.

Set up of the Acer Chromebook is simple if you already have a Google account. Just connect to the internet, log into your existing Google account and you’re done. As expected, the Chromebook synced well with all my other devices that use Chrome. Chrome only syncs with android phones - not iphones like mine. The Acer Chromebook is slim and lightweight. I can easily carry it in one hand and the texture of the cover allows for a good grip, although it does show fingerprints. The battery life seems to be exceptional. Web browsing and working on documents barely put a dent in the charge. After watching a movie and looking at some YouTube videos, the charge is still at 50%. It has a forward facing camera that is useful for Zoom calls, etc. I thought the picture quality was good. The sound, however, is marginal at best. I have a USB with songs that I like to listen to. The sound was tinny and grated on my nerves. But the sound is acceptable when watching a movie or video. I haven’t experienced any problems or delays when connecting to wireless. As soon as I turn it on, it connects. When asleep or opened it wakes quickly and is ready to use immediately. It’s more responsive than my full size PC running Windows OS. This was my first experience using a Chromebook. At first look it’s too basic. There’s just Chrome, Gmail, Google Docs and some apps. But on my PC running Windows OS, I use Chrome, Gmail and Google Docs - not Edge, Mail or Microsoft office. So really, it’s just the way I like it. And I don’t have to deal with Windows trying to switch me to Edge every time it gets a chance. The screen is 12 inches (measured diagonally) which isn’t huge, but bigger than a tablet. The actual dimensions are approximately 7 x 10 inches. I would prefer a slightly larger screen, but then it wouldn’t be lightweight and easy to carry. It only has 32 GB of storage, but that should be sufficient since Google Docs (spreadsheets, documents and powerpoints) and pictures are stored in the cloud and not on the hard drive. However, that does mean that the documents, spreadsheets, etc. can only be accessed when connected to the internet or through an external device. It does have a MicroSD slot for expandable storage if needed. What sets this Chromebook model apart from similar devices is its Military Grade Durability. The keyboard is sealed and per the manufacturer will drain accidental spills up to 330 mL. The cover will withstand 132 pounds of weight and it can survive a drop from 4 feet. It was a little scary to do, but I poured a glass of water on the keyboard. Most of it ran off onto the counter, but what did stay on the keyboard easily poured off and didn’t penetrate. A light wipe with a towel was all it needed. I dropped it on the floor and stood on it without any damage. Perhaps the biggest downside to purchasing a Chromebook is the AUE (Auto Update Expiration). After that date, the device will no longer receive software updates or support. The AUE for this model is June 2026. For the price, I believe the Chromebook is a good choice, especially for those who prefer Chrome and Gmail over the Microsoft counterparts. The durability features make it a good choice for younger users.

    Very Good Budget/Student CB

The Acer 512 is "ruggedized" and therefore a little heftier than the average budget CB, but not prohibitively so. Its screen is slightly taller than competitors' and is IPS, which is great for both clarity overall, and any off-axis viewing as it's not washed out. The bezels are noticeable, sure, but not an issue for most people, especially ones who grew up on CRT monitors like me :) Anyway Celeron 4020 is up to date and fast/responsive, mostly, with some lag here and there during video streaming. Battery life is very good. The clear weak link is the trackpad. My first unit's was intermittent and defective, and generally it and the keyboard don't inspire confidence. Also, I wasn't able to keep it clean for the life of me. Every fingerprint oil shone brightly and drove me nuts. Acer 311 with the "silver" finish didn't have such a problem, so it's likely the faux-carbon fiber back, not any excessive oiliness on my part. In all, although I couldn't justify keeping it for my light home use, and its appearance and feel are not.. elegant?, it'd be a great value for an on-the-go student/traveller type.

My husband loves his computer. It works really well and the keys are smooth. There was one thing that I didn't like and that was when we were watching a movie on the computer, the speakers started getting static in it bc it was to loud...so don't blast your speakers. But in all it was all good!!

I never thought I’d buy a chrome book but this little thing is awesome. It’s fast, it has instant on unlike a traditional windows laptop. It’s specs are limited, so expect it to do what it’s supposed to do… web browsing, Netflix, light application use and very light chrome/android gaming.

I purchased this for someone else, but I have purchased Acer Chromebooks for students and they work great. They used them for virtual learning and never had a problem, they respond to everything without a problem. This particular model is well made, easy to use, reasonably priced. It is a very sturdy model, should be able to survive a few drops. The keyboard is easy to use, the touch pad is also easy to use. The screen display is also good, it is not a high priced laptop but it does the job for the average user, you will not be disappointed.

Just what I needed. My old chromebook update end-date was approaching in Sept. 2021. So when I saw this Acer Chromebook 512 Ruggedized on sale at 129.99 a couple weeks ago I new it was a deal. I was going to wait until November Black Friday deals but why wait. This Acer computer has a 12" IPS screen which has a wider display than standard 16/9 display, making it view as a larger display. Duable and user friendly. Oh and now I have a chromebook with an end of update of June 2026.
