Customers are saying

Customers are delighted by the Nitro 5's performance, graphics capabilities, and fast SSD, frequently citing its excellent value for the price. Many appreciate the backlit keyboard and ease of use, but some users note that the battery life could be improved and that the laptop can get warm and noisy during intensive use. The laptop's weight is also a point of concern for some customers.

It broke in 18 days. The display went dim, but it's a horrid thing to begin with: all muggy colored and really condensed. The black keyboard doesn't help went you're in a darkened room, so you have to stay back lit. However the red lighting does not help much. My MacBook Pro is almost 8 years old and it lasted longer than this. It is now in for repairs already.

Had this computer for about 2 months. Fast, great graphics. Did everything I needed it to do. Then the screen just froze and it died. No warning. Brought it to store and Geek Squad fixing now. Never had trouble with Acer's before, we have had a few. Will update with anything new.

I am not a huge laptop gamer but I am willing to try it. I am a Galactic Civilization III and Ashes of the Singularity kinda guy. When I opened the box (it was huge) and honestly not as heavy as I had planned. Setup was mostly a walk thru. Windows 10 makes it all so east now. The i5 processor (4 cores 8 threads base clock 2.3) and SSD make for an almost immediate boot up. The display was not initially in full screen resolution which was odd. I have some issues with the track pad. There is not a ton of bloatware which is always nice ( I don't really need the added Norton trial) . I played Ashes of the Singularity and it looked pretty good, I used a plug in mouse to make the game easier and felt really good playing. I watched a couple movies off Amazon movies. Valerian and the city of 1000 planets downloaded well, the colors were off compared to my desktop (didn't pop and wow me). I set it to play the man in the high castle; streamed in highest quality, all services turned on and full brightness on the screen and it lasted for just over 4 hours. Pretty good for a gaming computer. ADD MORE RAM! You have 1 open slot Pros love a computer with an SSD drive, and you can add another drive the i5 processor can handle games and movies pretty well GeoForce 1050ti is better than my 2 year old desktop super quiet, I almost never heard the fans come on not as heavy as some other gaming laptop Wireless AC is great! I used Speedof.me laptop down/up/latency:229,3.8,20ms desktop (wired): 257,6.6,20ms The black on red backlit keyboard is great in the dark, but makes the keys very hard to see in a brighter room i have issues with the track pad, when you left or right click you have to push down not just tap. If you are a mouse user you wont care. They tried to go all in with the port types there are 4 USB ports, but only 1 is USB 3.0? who needs a media card reader on a gaming laptop? add another USB 3.0 and there is USBc The power brick is HUGE My cons were more nit picking than anything else. This is a great laptop, i set my games to max and the laptop didnt overheat. The battery life is decent and graphics were good. If you have an intro gamer, this is a great place to go.

The looks of this machine are very impressive. Let me start by giving kudos to Acer for including a laptop carrying sleeve with the computer. It was so nice not having to order one. It is a solid build with a great keyboard and mouse. If the track pad doesn't work right out of the box, find the function key to enable it. It took me bit to find the right function key to enable it. Once it was enabled, everything worked great. This computer has a great graphics card and can handle some graphic intensive applications. The display is only a 1920 x 1080 monitor, but it is capable of handling so much more. It is a fine display and works great, but the real beauty was discovered when I hooked it up to my 4K UHD monitor. I was then able to set the resolution much higher and I was not disappointed. It came with a very nice 256 GB solid state drive and 8 GB of RAM. This is sufficient for most applications, but I would recommend bumping it up to 16 GB if you plan to run multiple applications that migth be memory intensive. Setup was straight forward and Windows 10 has mad the setup nice. Make sure that you download the latest patches for the operating system. The most current drivers were installed out of the box. This is a solid contender and very competitive with other gaming machines in this price range. The solid state drive was nice bonus and it is fast because of it. I haven't challenged the battery life yet, but is rated at a respectable amount of time. Overall, this is a solid laptop.

First off, for the price you are getting a very good and very capable laptop. It is by no means the crème de la crème of gaming laptops or even your everyday go to, but it will hold its own and I am pleased with it. It is on the larger side of weight and surface space of the keyboard but it is still very comfortable to use. The screen is the perfect size for games and viewing videos. The touch scroll pad/ mouse is very responsive and accurate. The keys are soft and large enough to prevent miscues, I believe it is an accurate full scale keyboard. The backlighting is a very deep red color which is visually pleasing along with the black matte finish of the laptop. I have yet to go thru all of the settings to see if you can adjust the brightness of the backlit keys or change the sleep setting of the light because it works for me right now. Having the SSD reallt speeds up how fast the laptop boots up and is ready for action. All of the apps work effortlessly fast as does the wifi and bluetooth. The graphics card seems to get the job done and I have not experienced any lag or lack of performace. I have run multiple applications simultaneously from internet video streaming, photo apps, webpages, and more and have not been dissapointed. The video quality is very good with the 1080i HD and the matte looking screen which does not emit and reflection. I never realized how much the reflective properties of screen diminshes the quality of appearance. This laptop has all of the expected ports for connections and I absolutely love the HDMI output that I use to connect to an external ACER screen and projector when need be to add a screen source or view video in a bigger format. The webcam is decent and combined with the big screen allows great video conferennce calls or video calls with the family. Overall, for the price of this laptop you cannot go wrong if you are looking for a reasonbly priced laptop to enage in gaming or stream video. Definitely a worthwhile purchase in my opinion.

If you're looking for a great budget gaming laptop, this will serve you well! The newest generation Intel i5, nVidia 1050 TI, and Intel PCIe SSD, really up the game for this budget pick. You don't usually see quality parts in this cheap of a laptop. The SSD allows for quick boot times, program launches, and fast game loading speeds. The CPU and dedicated graphics really help this along as well. I threw a couple generic FPS games at this laptop and it handled it without an issue. The case comes off this laptop really easily, as well as there are nice removable panels for upgrading the RAM and adding a 2.5" SATA Drive. You don't see that a lot these days, this laptop is very user friendly for upgrading those basic devices when you want. This laptop comes with only 8GB of DDR4 2666, but it will take a maximum of 32GB. Some minor cons that I noticed, the battery life isn't amazing, and I would actually say it's shorter than what I expected to have. The laptop does heat up pretty easily as well, and the fans speed up quick to compensate. If you're not using headphones, it can get annoying. I also personally thought the keyboard was a little tight on key spacing, and the screen could be a little brighter. Overall, if you're looking for a budget gaming laptop, you'll be hard pressed to find another laptop with equal or better hardware at this price. Acer really stepped up their game.

Keyboard back-light goes out if you stop typing in 30 seconds or less. Cannot be adjusted. No touch markings on A and : to help you return to when typing. Paid extra for back lighting and would have looked for a different brand if I knew it would always go off and could not be adjusted.

      Dear John,
We are sorry to hear you are unhappy with your Acer Nitro laptop. The keyboard backlight does go out after approximately 30 seconds of inactivity. This is by design by most laptop manufacturers as a power savings feature. Regarding the touch markings on the keyboard- it is industry standard to have bumps on the F and J keys to allow the user to correctly position their left and right hand on the keyboard without having to look at the keyboard. Acer does not offer a model that has bumps on the A or colon keys.
With that said, we appreciate you taking the time to write this review and offer your feedback.

At the time of purchase this laptop had 4.6 out of 5 stars and 50 reviews with 98% would recommend to others. So I thought this was going to be a sure thing. Wrong. This fiasco started off bad and got worse. Cortana came on at about half max volume during the initial setup and startled me with a hideous crackling voice. I was hoping that was just my imagination or just audio in need of a driver update. Nope. The audio continued to be mildly to moderately crackly. The webcam didn't work at all. The light came on, but no picture, just a black screen. Video would not play in Edge or Opera Browsers even with Flash enabled. I reset the laptop, reinstalled drivers and got nothing. It only got worse to the point where it would barely boot up, and when it did it was very laggy. After a few hours of this nonsense I took it back for a refund. Ain't nobody got time for that.

    Good for Gaming/Great for Tasking

Acer aims to compete with other budget gaming laptops with the Nitro 5 and I believe it does just that. The Nitro 5 is a solid option for someone on a budget that wants to get as close to top of the line specs without paying a premium price for it. The GTX 1050 Ti coupled with 8Gb of DDR4 RAM make this laptop a solid purchase already for anyone looking to casually game. The boot times are fantastic and the laptop is quiet for the most part. If you're running cool boost technology then the fans will kick up and it gets very loud but all for the sake of enhancing performance without frying your CPU and GPU. The battery life is not great but I got about 2 1/2 hours on Fortnite before I needed to charge it. Usually you'll get 4 hours of playing on lower settings which is not the ideal way to game but you'll be gaming for a longer period of time before a charge. I believe that aside from being a gaming laptop this is a great tasking laptop. The SSD is phenomenal with blazing fast boot times and the DDR4 RAM allows for quick data transfer speeds which makes tasking a thing of beauty(Both very easily upgrade able if desired). If you're looking for a good gaming laptop but also something that'll get you through school work, audio mixing for your band, or even photo/video editing then the Nitro 5 is a solid choice. I haven't had any trouble with it so far with any of my games on steam or with adobe premiere so it's working like a charm. One underrated thing to point out is that the wireless card is one of the best I have used on a laptop. You get fast wireless speeds and it will connect to even some of the most stubborn routers such as the one that I connect to when I'm at work.

It is a dark keyboards with dark keys that have a cool backlight. The problem is is that backlight turns off after 30 seconds of non-use which will then require that you strike a key to turn it back on. It is very annoying fumbling for the right key to strike.

I am only thankful that this Acer Nitro 5 decided to have problems within the return period! It would freeze up ocasionally but the biggest problem I had was with the wireless adapter. It just stopped working two days after purchase. I figured, ok new computer, driver probably needs an update. That fixed it for about a week. Trouble shooter was no help and I am not allowed access to the Bios for a reset. Purchased to replace my sons old laptop for college. Nothing but problems. I will not buy another Acer!

This mainstream gaming laptop comes with the latest 8th generation Intel i5 processor. Otherwise everything is the same as ones coming with 7th gen. I5 processors. I prefer a speedy SSD flash storage but U can add a 1T HHD with a cage that Acer can ship to U. Too bad a cage was not included. There's also a door on the bottom of the case to let U add a memory module. Was surprised to see a free sleeve included in the box. Have a 15.6” sleeve already but it doesn’t fit as it’s too short on the long side. Power brick beefy looking as is the connector to the PC. I’m not much of a gamer and just wanted a laptop from Acer, a brand I know and respect. Have one of their Android tablets, a desktop PC monitor and a Chromebook. No problems with any of this kit. Specs on this new machine better than anything I own so no complaints here. Port selection excellent as U would expect with a gaming PC. It took one hour to reach a full charge out of the box. I swear this laptop PC seems bigger than 15.6” but it’s been six years since I had one this size. HP Smart was found by Win 10 to print a one page color document to my new HP Officejet 5255. Battery life doesn’t seem to be much more than 8-½ hours without videos. Not very good. Also seems the things needed to run Linux on Windows 10 Home is too complicated for newbies to Linux. Even for uBuntu which is on the Windows Store. Wish the SD Card would go all the way in and be spring loaded. Now it sticks out and can be easily dislodged if bumped into. Also there’s a lot of light bleed on the backlit keyboard.

I got this laptop as more than one person in this house games and we only had one laptop suitable for gaming. We have a group that regularly meets with ages ranging from the youngest who is 18 to the oldest who only admits to being alive during the Eisenhower presidency. Our range of laptops range from top-of-the-line gaming laptops to those which just barely make the grade. I asked everyone what they thought of my new one so, of course, they all had to try it. I received a lot of comments which pretty much mirrored what I thought. Pros - Amazingly rich colors and details, super-fast processor speed which makes for incredible graphics even on the highest setting the game didn’t slow down or experience any serious lag spikes or latency issues. The way it renders everything is absolutely breath taking. The sound quality on it is amazing. Cons - The way the keyboard is laid out isn’t the most comfortable design considering the 1 key is sitting right next to the up-arrow key and the space between the arrow keys and the number keys is nonexistent making it a little annoying because of the way it makes the shift key sit right next to the up arrow key. The fact that there is only 1 USB 3.0 and 2 USB 2.0 is also troublesome, but it is not the worst thing. The fans in the back can get a little loud when your gaming for an extended period of time but that shouldn’t be an issue for most as we ran it for hours. These issues did lose it a star in the rating. All in all this is a great machine for its price range.

I bought this on a really good sale, $200 off, and was pretty stoked with what I was getting. However, I ended up returning it because not a single game I tried on it was playable. It may have been the particular computer that I got, in fact it probably was, but every game was plagued with micro-stutters. I spend 2 days searching for a remedy and trying about a dozen things to fix it, but was never able to do so. When the suggestions started including things like using Windows Power Shell and Regedit, I decided to cut my losses. I'm happy for those who like their Acer Nitro 5 Gaming Laptop.
