    Why so much bloatware?

This is a great looking laptop with some nice specs, but I was let down by a couple of items. Too much bloatware, the mouse pad feels very cheap and likely to break, and the laptop is pretty heavy. It did however start up and seem to do much better after I uninstalled all the junk software that was pre-installed. I am excited that the ram and ssd can be easily upgraded to keep this laptop relevant for a few extra years. I wasn't blown away, but expectations need to correlate with the reality that the price of this computer is very competitive for what you get. Overall, I am happy with this laptop and look forward to many years of use!!

    Great Midrange Gaming Laptop

After using this laptop for the past few days, I am overall impressed with the quality of parts you get for such a low price. Normally, I would pay twice as much for a gaming laptop, but this laptop packs in some higher-end components. What I liked I was surprised to find a neoprene case included with the unit. Even the higher-end laptops I purchased in the past didn’t include anything extra. The laptop is made of mostly plastic, but Acer did a great job making it look expensive with the brushed metal top and exposed red hinge. Cheaper laptops normally feel flimsy, but this was a solid build and had very little flex under pressure. The red backlit keyboard was impressive and did a great job tying the red/black theme together. In addition, the keyboard’s responsiveness was great. Pressing the keys felt about as smooth as I would expect from a more expensive laptop. The 1080 full HD screen was nice, bright, and clear, which exceeded my expectations. I did notice the viewing angle was not as good as a higher-end laptop, but the great price makes up for this minor drawback. The sound is not mindblowing, but impressive for this price point. I could honestly not expect any better sound. The only game I have tried on this so far was StarCraft II, and it performed smoothly, without any lag. I am sure there are more memory/processor/video card-demanding games out there, so I would check the recommended hardware before purchasing. What I would like added/improved One thing I wished Acer would have improved on is the mouse pad. I am not sure if it is just my unit, but even after changing settings, it was not as responsive as I would like it to be. I noticed the right click was smooth and responsive, but the left click was lacking and did not respond to some of my clicks unless I made a conscious effort to press hard and straight down. I would also hear an unexpected “click” sound from time to time, as if the lower part of the pad was rubbing up against the case or something inside. I would also like to see more than one USB 3.0 port (this has 3 USB ports total). Overall, I would recommend this laptop for anyone looking for a great gaming laptop, but who doesn’t want to pay more than $1000. If you require a responsive mouse pad, however, you may want to test one at the store before purchasing.

The backlighting is red and can't be changed. WASD have red around the key to show you're a gamer. The non-glare screen is nice especially since it's 1080p. The text may appear a little blurry; look it up for the fix. The fix is easy. In order to change the volume, you have to use Fn + up/down arrow keys. To change the brightness, Fn + left/right arrow keys. The headphone jack is about 2/3 towards the back of the laptop on the right side, which is weird, but doable. The area around the trackpad has marks from my use that are like stains from my sweaty hands, but it's not a big deal. The 256GB SSD is great because this thing starts fast. It feels like sleep and shutdown have the same starting speeds. Either way, this starts up faster than my PC with an SSD. I put in a 1TB 7200RPM HDD for any gaming I might do. It's easy to install, but you have to be careful about the connection. Mine came with four hard drive installation screws in a little bag, but I didn't need them when installing my HDD. Rocket League runs easily on this. I haven't had the chance to play something heavy, but my roommate with the same laptop did. He played Far Cry 5 on it, and the fans kick to the max. They are loud. The temperatures get high, too. If you're going to play heavy games like Far Cry 5, I recommend changing the thermal paste to one of the best ones. There's a video on YouTube with a full tutorial on how. The trackpad is okay; like all trackpads, it can get annoying to use. The camera's not too shabby for the one time I used it.

This is, by far, the quickest booting laptop I have ever used. Setting it up for first use was pretty cool, as Cortana let me answer most questions verbally. I had a minor issue with the touchpad not working when setup was complete, but apparently, I pressed the function key that disabled it during the setup. So that was my own fault. The laptop has been very easy to use and I've had no issues. The graphics card is one of the best. The fans only kick in (become audible) when the graphics card is under heavy stress. I can't see any ghosting while playing and that is a first for me on a laptop.

The Acer Nitro 5 15.6" Laptop comes securely packaged in a sturdy box. Upon opening the box, the first thing one notices is that the laptop is large, and while not too heavy, it has a solid feel and appears ruggedly constructed. If you are shopping for a light weight, highly portable laptop, this is not the one for you. However, if you want the large display and high performance graphics this PC offers, and don't mid the extra weight and girth those things require, you'll be very happy with your purchase. The laptop comes with many powerful features, including a 15.6" 1080p HD display, Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti graphics, and a 256GB Solid State Drive. While I would like a larger SSD, at this price point, I can't complain too much, and if you discover that more storage is need, an upgrade is relatively inexpensive, and there are myriad external and cloud options as well. The computer also sports excellent connectivity with 802.11AC WiFi, on the right side two USB 2.0 type a ports and a 3.5mm headset connector, and on the left side a USB 3.0 type A port, a USB 3.1 Type C port, an HDMI port, a 10/100/1000 Mbps LAN port and an SD card reader. Pretty much everything one could ask for in a PC today. The picture quality is excellent using both the internal display, and when connected to an external 1080p monitor. Sound quality via HDMI is also excellent. Finally, the styling is sleek and attractive, and the red keyboard lettering is very cool. In dim lighting, Fn + F9 brings up the red keyboard backlighting which is very functional and won't hurt your night vision if you're in a situation where that matters... Oh, and a neoprene sleeve is included to protect your shiny new laptop. I thought that was a nice touch. This is a nice PC, and if you're ok with the size, you can't go wrong for the price.

The setup out of the box was pretty easy, but some items required the touchpad or mouse which did not work immediately until I did some random key playing. The steps were self-explanatory. Download speeds were pretty good (I assume the limit is my wifi). But installing a couple games seemed a little slow. Once playing the graphics and speed of the game seemed pretty good, not great. I would recommend this laptop for a low price model but not top line. It does not come with any peripherals and no CD drive, so you will need to download from online or use a flash drive.

This is an awesome gaming laptop! You can really see the advantage of having an SSD with this laptop because it loads very quickly,it is quiet when you are gaming and more importantly it stays cool! I like to game, but my son is the true gamer. He has a gaming pc that at least price wise they are the same. To my surprise he was able to play the same games (gmod, fortnite, overwatch) he plays on his PC on this ACER laptop without any issues. I also like that the keyboard lights up. I would highly recommend this laptop if you are into portable gaming.

I was provided a unit in exchange for an unbiased review. Simply holding this Acer Nitro laptop in your hands will make you think it was produced by other manufacturers known for their gaming systems. And while it doesn't pack the absolute latest in technology, there's plenty in the package as well as upgradeability that will keep you going for several years. The Intel Core i5 processor, while multi-core, is certainly not the latest in the chip maker's family, when you pair it up with the 256GB Solid-State Drive, there aren't too many applications that it won't crunch through. The 1080p screen is also crisp, bright, and worthy of most games in spite of not being 4k (but why are you looking for a 4k machine with a 15-inch display? The size alone would defeat the purpose of the extra pixel density!). Of course, you really can't complain too much about the graphics, what with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti card onboard. The keyboard is definitely worth typing home about. These are not chicklet keys; they are back-lit with a separate keypad on the side, and they're a lot like pressing into velvet. Very smooth and subtle but able to get fast typing done. I/O ports are great, too: one USB 2.0 port, one USB 3.0 port, as well as an HDMI out and USB-C port. In case you weren't aware, the beauty of a USB-C port is that it allows connectivity with Thunderbolt 3-based cables and devices as well as DisplayPort (with adapter) functionality. Worth mentioning: there is a wired gigabit Ethernet port (with an expandable "mouth"), so when you want to go "old school" and wire up with excellent connectivity, this laptop has it. As far as wireless is concerned, it does to Bluetooth and wireless AC. The best part? When you're ready to upgrade, Acer includes four separate screws to upgrade the hard drive, and RAM can be increased to 32 GB. But honestly, when you have an SSD drive paired to this processor, you're not going to have to worry about things slowing down; it is quite zippy when moving between applications. Acer really seems to have landed a solid laptop in a field taken up by more traditional competitors.

The Acer Nitro 5 15.6" Laptop is a great gaming laptop at an affordable price point. Everything about this laptop screams gaming system, from the shale etched color combined with red highlights around the hinge and keyboard to the space age shape, to the full HD 15.6" display and large fans for cooling. And that's just the physical attributes! Internally, the Nitro 5 boasts an 8th Generation Core i5 mobile processor, a 256GB SSD, 8GB of memory and a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti graphics card. All this adds up to a great gaming experience with a quick booting system with plenty of processing power to run just about any game on the market without any lag. As I usually wear earphones while gaming, I don't really take notice of the internal speakers, but the Nitro 5 speakers rock. They are super clean and remain that way as the volume is cranked all the way up to 11! Add Windows 10 and a slew of ports including USB-C, HDMI and Ethernet and you've got a perfect everyday laptop system disguised as a gaming laptop. Pros: - speed of the Gen 8 Core i5 processor - quite operating of the SSD storage - Fans - adjustable and are super quite and keep the system cool even after a couple hour session. - "Gamer" look and feel of the laptop with angled shape and red highlights. - easily add memory or additional storage with available bays (tool included) - nice soft case is included Cons: - Little on the heavy side around 6 lbs. - not really a concern for a gaming system. - charging brick is also relatively large, required to power the system, but not great for mobile use. - SD card sticks out when installed, knit-picking at this point! Overall the Acer Nitro 5 gaming laptop is an affordable and very capable machine that I would recommend for anyone new to gaming or someone looking to get a big bang for the buck.

    A Solid Laptop

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I have worked in IT since the mid 90's and today I'm a Govt IT professional in VA. I have owned several laptops over the years and have a lot of experience evaluating systems, here goes my take... The Good - The laptop itself looks sharp enough with a heavy duty plastic, black brushed exterior, but even so its very solid and this keeps the weight down. Its durable and the screen hinges and structure are solid, no wobble or lose parts, it opens and closes smoothly, I like the design. -The keyboard is a soft touch and registers keystrokes without having to apply much pressure and I find myself typing extremely fast with few errors. The location of the Delete key (directly above the Backspace key) threw me off and it took me a week or so before I could hit it without guessing or hitting it. I find its position odd but something I adjusted to. The Red backlight and stenciling on the keys is not adjustable and took a little getting used to but its easy to see in daylight and easy to see in low light, another plus. The keyboard is very silent even when your drumming out a lot of text. -The mouse pad is sensitive to light touch and easy to use. -The Monitor is something some folks take issue with, its certainly not a super high end monitor but frankly, it does the job and with the graphics card, image quality is crisp, clear and videos run cleanly and clearly, no complaints here. -The operating system and "other" software is thin, meaning only a few extras were loaded and I removed it all in a few minutes freeing up a load of space. The boot time for me is mere seconds. (for comparison on speed) I also own a heavily customized MSI gaming desktop, i7 processor, Geforce GTX 1080 Founder, 32 Gig Ram, liquid cooling system with 3 variable speed fans and a 480 gig SSD, and this laptop is only slightly slower, I am very impressed with Acer. The So So -Memory, you get 8GB which is OK, it worked well enough but when multitasking/heavy gaming were in play things did slow down a bit. After a week of using it (and yes I push mine hard) I decided to upgrade to upgrade to 16GB, so I spent 80 bucks & boy did this run faster, major performance pickup and something I suggest. Wifi - Not sure what card is in this machine but it does the job. I get about 100 Mbps up and down consistently, When plugged into CAT5 its extremely fast. The Bad - Having owned many laptops I am used to 5 plus hours on a battery, generally even under heavy use I could expect 4, but not with this one. Under a heavy load the battery lasted about 2.5 hours, I repeated this just to ensure I wasnt being overly critical, same result. If you run it on power saving you might get about 4.5 or 5. But for me, I typically plug my laptops in whenever I can, which is about 90 percent of the time, so this isnt too big a deal for me. Overall I like this laptop a lot, I spent 80 bucks to upgrade memory and that was about the only tweak I could think of that mattered to me, add 8 and you wont regret it. The design and functionality and overall performance for the price are hard to beat. Most comparable laptops are much more expensive and the I5 processor & dedicated graphics are solid, meets the need even for intensive gaming. Money matters and I got mine on sale for 750 and it was a great buy, I would do it again. I was on the fence reading the reviews about the monitor and battery, but after seeing it in store and using it at home for a few weeks I know I made a good choice.. My only suggestion to Acer would be to make the delete key bigger or move it :-)

If you haven't bought a coding or gaming laptop in a few years, you might want to check out this laptop and do some research on the latest generations of hardware available. The i5 processor is enough to keep up with intensive tasks. The 1050Ti graphics card in this rig is very powerful, mobile cards have come a long way in just a few years, they are starting to begin to catch up to their desktop counterparts. The DDR4 memory (8 GB on one stick, one easily accessible empty slot available to add another 8 GB stick if needed) sure helps thing run faster than DDR3 laptops of yesteryear. The WIFI is fast AC MU-MIMO if you got the router to take advantage of that (I do). The 256GB SSD is the small stick type, but there is an accessible hard drive bay to add another 2.5 inch standard SSD drive. This worked easily as it should, just had to find the baggy of hard drive mounting screws in the laptop packaging. Has a wide angle viewable IPS display, full HD (1920 x 1080). Backlit red keyboard looks nice. Runs Unity great and plays current games at decent settings just fine. Has a pretty responsive cooling system that seems to really kick in the cooling when needed and doesn't let the system get super hot first. Best all around windows laptop I have ever used, and its under $1,000. Go figure. I really don't consider battery life a big factor for a gaming or coding laptop because you are generally going to be wanting to have this thing plugged into the wall for either activity, but in lighter use, like web browsing or watching streaming video, I got around 4 hours out of the battery.

The Acer Nitro 5 w/256gb SSD Drive is a beautiful, sleek gaming laptop. I have never owned an Acer product before, and this one has impressed me. Personally, I don’t do “that kind” of gaming - other than solitaire, hearts, mahjong and the like. So this review is based on my use of it as a moderately priced everyday laptop - videos, streaming, email, internet, photos, music, etc. This laptop is super fast with its 8th generation Intel core i5 processor, 256gb SSD drive (which makes booting so quick), the 8 gb of 4ddr RAM (which is more than sufficient right now), and the dedicated NVIDIA GeForce graphics card. This laptop is mostly plastic, but still weighs in at almost 6lbs but is thin at 1.1” which didn’t allow room for them to put in a DVD drive - a slight inconvenience. It doesn't have the best sounding speakers, but they are just fine. I like the 15.6” full HD 1920x1080 display with LED backlight and the backlit keyboard. I do have issues with the numeric keypad, which seems like an afterthought with the keys too close together. And anyone using one knows the zero key should be on the bottom left and double sized to be hit with your thumb. This Acer put the zero in the middle of the bottom row. Very difficult for me to use. I do realize this is intended to be a gaming laptop and this would likely be unimportant to gamers. Overall this is a nice looking, fast laptop which will meet my needs with power and speed to spare. At this price point, you do get what you pay for including a neoprene case - a nice touch.

This laptop has a lot under the hood for a reasonable price. It's good for some less resource intensive gaming and also all other needs - Office, doing your taxes, etc. It's fast right out of the box so far has not run hot for the power it's putting out. It also has a sleek design, that while not designed to be ultra-portable, is perfect for those looking for a desktop replacement.

    Great Bang with some tweaking...

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Opening words: Picked this up on Black Friday and VERY pleased. Have spent the last 2 weeks tweaking and burning and finally got it running perfectly. It can run warm right out the box (but it's meant to with thermal and power throttling) so if you're buying it for heavy gaming (and want it to run cool WITHOUT THROTTLING) I would definitely re-paste the heatsinks and under-volt the core mV power voltage (NOT CLOCK SPEED) with ThrottleStop but do so WITH CAUTION and only if you know what your doing. If not, pay a tech to do it. For information, go to "bob of all trades" (not affiliated) to see how.... In Skyrim currently mine is running at @65.6avg *C full load gaming on GPU high settings and at @ 64.2Cavg on CPU stuck on 61FPS. On ultra settings its 68.8C avg. and GPU 71.2C avg. CPU on ultra in Skyrim avg. 57 FPS.... That's VERY GOOD for a 1050Ti laptop. It Did 66.7 avg and 67.7C avg. respectfully on Furmark 1080p burn in no AA after 45 min. Would raise higher on 24hour burning but probably low 70's... Still very acceptable for laptop. REVIEW: Build quality is really nice. Comes with nice cover bag for free. Fit and finish is really good. Keyboard looks great but can run a little warm on WSAD keys after hours of gaming. Have no complaints on hardware. Getting 300MBs down on Xfinity with the AC wifi. RAM is ok but would recommend switching the single stick out for a dual channel kit if gaming. NVME is nice but only about 1,500 on reads, a 970Evo would be faster. I have an 860Evo SATA SSD on it as well and with Samsung Magic's Rapid on it scores over 5,100 on reads and 3,500 writes. That's fantastic but it's not a completely objective test with rapids . Screen looks great, touch pad nice once you turn down the sensitivity. Top of the palm rest above the keyboard under the monitor will run very toasty on high gaming but my temps are still in the mid 60's. Cons: Only down side I can see on this laptop is subjective to the user. If you are wanting to get hours of battery life on this laptop, you won't get it. If battery life is what you're after go for a "U" series 15W processor model. This laptop is a full 45W "H" processor which makes it great for gaming but bad for battery life. Even all graphics running through the Intel 420 IGP and power settings all the way down, I'm lucky if I get 1.75 hours on battery just working in windows. This is meant to be plugged in at a desk and run full tilt then packed up and taken to a LAN party or Hotel room and plugged back in... this not a Prius, it's a Mustang. I would definitely recommend this laptop, especially on sale. I got mine for a $599.00 steal on Black Friday and for the 8300H and 1050Ti it was worth the extra $60 compared to the Dell 5575 with Ryzen 2500U and IGP I was going to get at $430.00 and then have to add a $100.00 256GB 970Evo too because a 1 TB 5400 SUCKS!! as a primary drive... I Couldn't be happier with the Acer Nitro 5 AN515-53 55G9!

Wow is all we can say. You would be hard pressed to find a better performing laptop for the money. We have an autistic son who plays video games all the time. Whenever we go on trips, we always let him use our inferior laptop and have to hear him whine about how slow it is. Not any more!! A great gaming computer for under $1000? Here it is.
