Customers are saying

Customers consistently note the excellent performance and large screen size as major strengths of the Nitro 5 gaming laptop. Positive feedback also highlights the good graphics, RAM, keyboard, and overall value for the price. However, some users mention that the battery life could be improved, and the laptop's weight and potential for fan noise are recurring concerns. While some users find the laptop runs warm, others report it as easy to use and upgrade.

Good gaming computer, but even better portable alternative for a desktop. The discreet graphics cards, expandable storage and fast processor handle Adobe CC with no problems, running Photoshop, inDesign, Word, Outlook and Chrome simultaneously with no trouble. I use this a a replacement for my MacBook Pro and it is more than up to the task. Not bad for gaming, either. Runs Elite Dangerous no problem on two monitors. Only issue is the fans at high speed are a bit noisy, but well worth the tradeoff for keeping the processor cool. I do recommend buying a second stick of 8 gb memory. Very easy to install. Same with upgrading storage -- adding second SSD and HD. Best bank for your buck.

I debated on whether to get this laptop because another retailer had an entry level gaming laptop for 499.99. I am so glad I did. I wanted something that could be easily upgraded. This laptop meets all of my demands. I wanted a laptop with M.2 slots, could be upgrade to 32 GB RAM, and had a 9th or 10th gen Intel Processor. I could have gotten a laptop with 16 GB of RAM and two hard drives (1.256 GB combined), but I would not have been able to add another M.2 Drive and would still have to buy 32 GB of RAM because most laptops have 2 sticks of 8GB RAM. This one has 2 M.2 slots. One is in use as the offered 512 GB SSD drive. I added a 1 TB M.2 SSD in the remaining slot. I added a 2 TB Hybrid SSHD and 32 GB of RAM. This is a beast. It's crazy fast. Windows 10 on the M.2 512 GB makes it start insanely fast and the gaming is crazy. OMG!! I've been playing Gears 5, Injustice 2, Diablo 3,and CoD MW. There's no lag, and I usually play on MEDIUM or HIGH settings. I've been on Game Pass and Steam. I wanted this laptop for gaming and coding. I do have Python 3.8 loaded and again no issues. I've only had it 4 days, but it's been a blast just messing around with it. I would recommend it to anyone. I would recommend you add more RAM. Get 32 GB if you can afford it. It's so easy to upgrade. You can always add another M.2 drive in the empty slot. There's also an empty 2.5 HDD slot as well; which can be upgraded up to 2 TB. I've heard some complaints about the fans. I have had no issues. I was downloading game pass games and playing Gears 5 and never really heard the fan. I usually have it set to AUTO.

Previously used a Windows 7 Acer Aspire 15" laptop for the past 12 years. Only problem I ever had was a crashed hard drive. No problem as I backed up everything with an external drive and the machine was easily fixed. Since the old Acer was so reliable I decided to stay with them for my Windows 10 machine. Consumer Reports gave this machine a high rating in this 17" version. Not so much with the 15". So, I watched Best Buy for sales and when the price dropped $100 I bought it. It seemed a great value for the money. I am NOT a gamer. I decided the more robust Nitro would easily serve my needs and perhaps save problems with a hard drive crash via the SSD. If not, I still back up with a thumb drive and the cloud. The new 17" screen is nice. It isn't glossy like my old machine and thus has no reflections. It's easy to view from a wide angle. Now in my mid 70's and I appreciate the larger screen in font and images. I like the fact that the keyboard lights up when being used. It's much easier to work with in dimly lit areas. The touch pad is OK but I do miss the scroll feature that was in my 12 year old aspire pad. I use an external mouse so that problem is solved. The transition from 7 to 10 was pretty easy and I was able to do it on my own. The machine is very quiet. Rarely do I hear the fans and the SSD means you never hear the hard drive working. The Core i5 chip is plenty robust for daily use of web, word, and XL. I use this machine like a desktop but like to have the mobility of a laptop for when we travel. Bottom line, it works as advertised and is a great machine for home and work.

Got this on sale for $750 and it works beautifully. I've had it for a little over a month and I haven't run into any problems with it so far. Loads fast, sound quality is pretty good, and the discrete graphics card significantly improved my gaming experience. The camera could be better but I don't expect anybody looking at this laptop to be interested in making videos from it. It gets the job done and is decent enough for video calling. The keyboard layout is a little cramped at times, so it might take a while to get used to if you're an avid writer, or especially if you use the right shift key often. Design is obviously meant for "uber intense gamer boys" so if you want something that won't attract a lot of attention or has a subtle design this isn't for you. The laptop is pretty hefty so it's not ideal for travel, unless this is your only luggage or you have beefy shoulders. It can get pretty hot while in heavy use (using both the cpu and gpu) so be careful if you have it on a bed or your lap while doing so. This isn't something I would worry about if you just have a browser and a word processor open. I would recommend this for anybody wanting to upgrade from a $500 laptop but not wanting to go the full 9 yards to buy a desktop, especially if you can catch this on sale. Great use of my money

I am not a gamer. I use this laptop for work and personal use. I love it. It is very intuitive and super fast. It has a good screen size. Battery life is not great, but I don't use it outside of the house so that doesn't matter to me. The red back-lit keyboard is very easy to see. You won't be sorry with this laptop.

A great bargain for the computing power, and the graphic card works flawlessly: my wife is playing the latest Sims 4 game online without any slowdowns from the pc (the only slowdowns are coming from EA's overloaded servers during this pandemic crisis). Easy set-up, too! Acer Brilliance at work.

Happy with purchase. Very quick processor and really like the option of a pin as opposed to a long password to 'lock' the computer. It is a little heavier than we expected, so with a small child who pulls on everything that is something we aren't thrilled about but do like the large screen & that it ISN'T touch screen for little fingers, so when we are working on it if he touches it, it doesn't mess things up.

great machine for the price. this is not a top end gaming machine for sure but it is great for the screen size and speed in its class. the screen real estate is awesome i upgraded the ram to 32mb and still have an open M2 Nand slot open and an ssd slot so plenty of room to grow. I wish the usb C port was a type 2 it is a type 1 so no video over it that was a let down.

I started playing when you had to roll dice and make your own maps on DnD. I was looking for a decent machine around $1000. Found this Acer on sale for $699 was $879. I was concerned because you get what you pay for. I knew from the price it would mean compromise. K...screen a little dark when gaming in caves or at nite in Game.. 60hrz. I can turn up brightness enough with still a good pic. Very pleased with graphics. Like nitro sense..haven't had to adjust too much. I play older games..Skyrim..Civ6..temps stays around 85 degrees..fans don't seem too loud..I live on boat so it was a concern. AND no pause button..but can pause within Game options. Bottom line: Everyone would like a screaming machine but most don't need it. My compromises are acceptable. Love 512 ssd. Had this "puter" 1 month. Was worried about quality but am happy. Like 17in. screen but it's big. Could be happy with 15in. too. Decent machine..good price..good quality.

I love this laptop! Big screen nice visuals. The speakers however are very quiet. Hard to hear when the computer fans speed up. Even so this laptop was definitely worth the money and I can upgrade my harddrive which is a bonus. Plays extra smooth : fortnite , runescape on ultra graphics and csgo.

I was able to get this one on sale for $660 and have really enjoyed it. My first gaming laptop and my first gaming PC in years. Due to my set up at home and not wanting to worry about building a gaming PC, I went with the Nitro after alot of research. I play Dota 2, LOL, Escape from Tarkov and PUBG mainly, all run great at high settings. This isnt going to push Red Dead 2 or other graphically intensive games, but it surprised me with how well it played the games I mentioned. Keyboard feels great to type on and the screen actually was impressive for a 60hz. The only thing I added was an extra stick of 8gigs of DDR4 SDRAM. Ram is easy to add, just take the screws off the bottom and it snaps off, you can even add another drive, sata or M2. Overall I am excited to have a great laptop to play games I couldnt on my consoles.

Large screen, decent graphics card and a solid state drive make a good overall gaming laptop. Backlit keyboard is nice, but wished it stayed on. Looked at machines that cost much more and just did not offer that much more for the huge difference in price. Plays my strategy games as well as Call of Duty.

I purchased this laptop towards the end of April 2020. It has great specs for the price and is a great value. However, there are some issues regarding heat. I have noticed some thermal throttling due to frequent high CPU temps. This is an issue for me. In the short time that I have been using this laptop, the CPU regularly sits at 90C even under minimal loads. With only NItrosense open, it reaches 70-73C. I have Coolboost on, which from what I can tell, helps marginally. I keep the display brightness down to 50%, keep the laptop on my desk surface and have even elevated it a bit with some rubber pads at each corner. It seems the fans pulling in cool air from underneath really didn't have sufficient space to get enough cool air. My room is temperature controlled at 72F. This is well within recommended ambient temps. Now, what can be done? I first would recommend using some rubber grips or a laptop cooling pad with this pc. Additionally, you can undervolt the CPU, re-apply the thermal paste (i.e. Thermal Grizzly), and a few other things. Be careful, you do not want to void your warranty and you certainly don't want to fry your computer! I am only saying there are things that can be done with proper care. I haven't even taken the back cover off of this computer as to not void my warranty. I am probably going to return this and go for a Nitro 50 tower instead, as I really don't need a laptop to take on the go, but really just need an office/gaming computer. Other things I would suggest: invest in another stick of DDR4 2666 8GB ram, expand your memory. Fortunately, Acer has really given you a great path for upgrades. You have room for an additional M.2 SSD as well as a 2 1/2in. drive. This is fantastic. You can actually overclock the 60hz display. I have seen videos from Linus Tech Tips overclocking the display to around 90hz. Again, I haven't done anything more than tweak fan speeds in Nitrosense and elevate the laptop slightly off of my desk to provide better fan clearance. Both of those help, but for me I am still having throttling issues. The ram is in single channel, which keeps things simple for throwing an additional stick in for dual channel, but can really get bogged down with just a few tabs open in a browser. Acer support is supposed to be pretty great, and I will have no issues buying more Acer products. But for me, as much as I enjoy this computer, I am going to go with a tower instead. This has everything to do with the thermals. Take a look at the thermal design and its pretty clear why it struggles to keep things cool. Overall good computer, lacking thermals.

It’s very very nice the materials that they use is not like a cheap plastic. These are very well organized and the looks is very satisfying the keyboard bezel is flawless! The keys are absolutely amazing not so soft not hard either it’s really well engineered for gaming! Screen I love the screen it’s 17 inches and well enough for me to play my favorite games like call of duty and with i5 and 8gb ram with 1650 gtx graphics card is very good enough to play in max settings without any log. Hardrive is 512 and you can actually ad more hdd on it you can put two hdd. I can’t say any cons on this one but it’s a rock solid Gaming Laptop!

They said this computer was incredibly fast, and it has not disappointed. Fastest computer I have ever had including my work laptop. Graphics are amazing, and the lighted keyboard is such an eye catcher! My wife and daughter keep wanting to steal it :) This was my first Acer laptop. After the poor service of HP and being a former die hard Dell user, this won't be my last! Only drawback is this thing is heavy! But if you want a desktop replacement, you'd have a hard time finding anything better.

This laptop performs over my expectations. For a cheaper end laptop I can play the top end games with my friends with ease. The graphics card produces really well and the awesome 17.3 inch screen makes sure that you can see it all. A huge upgrade from what I had before. I definitely would recommend this to someone who is looking for a the cheaper side of gaming and laptops. Only thing I had to do was buy an external hard drive which is easily affordable. Would buy again

First of all I'm an technology enthusiast and a technician but the intention was to provide my sister and her family with a reliable gaming/everyday laptop at an affordable price. This is the second Nitro 5 I have tried and disappointed again. The first I purchased, out-of-the-box after charging and turning on, the keyboard malfunctioned (not all the keys worked). I couldn't even type in the WiFi password nor create username/password. I had to use an external keyboard but that defeats the mobility/purpose of a laptop! I was able to do an exchange, via USPS, within a week since the PC wasn't available at any Best Buy within a certain mile radius. As for the second laptop, it was working perfectly for my sister's family until two weeks later. My sister notified me that some of the keys stopped working (AGAIN!). When I was trying to test the PC it wouldn't even turn on. Long story short, the middle screw underneath the laptop had to be removed to boot the system, oddly. With the system on I has able to update/upgrade the BIOS only (again with an external keyboard) since everything was "up-to-date". I didn't want to exchange the laptop again to just have to go through with the same process, especially for my sister and her family. I'll suck it up and buy them something more expensive and reliable. It's too bad because I really wanted to like it. The PC all the I/O (inputs) that most people need on top of a good dedicated graphics card for a UHD resolution and enough storage.

I purchased this because I needed a 17 in screen. Currently used for home shopping, school, and general browsing. I don't think I would use it for gaming though. I used to would never buy an Acer, but they have improved a lot in the past 5 years! So far I have been very happy with it for the money. You cannot change the time out settings though or the fan will constantly run.

I bought this computer about 1 week ago, it was working fine, until about 2 days ago. Its a fast computer, easy to use, responsive, plays all the games I want to play on great settings.. but.. about 20% of the keyboard keys stopped working within 4 days of having it. random keys, making it very very frustrating to use the computer and impossible to complete some tasks. i'm lucky my password was unaffected otherwise I would be unable to use the computer at all. I have contacted ACER and they have given very little help in resolving the issue, will update when they follow up with me. If ACER does not rectify the issue I will be exchanging it with BESTBUY going to leave 'quality' blank for now until I have an update on the status of the computer being fixed
