Alien persists as a seminal sci-fi horror classic, a masterpiece of suspense and terror that continues to scare audiences forty years later. With masterful talent and skill, Scott generates a suffocatingly ominous and foreboding atmosphere that pits cinema's first female action hero, portrayed by the excellent Sigourney Weaver, against H.R. Giger's now-iconic, sexually-charged and ravenously brutal monster. Celebrating its 40th Anniversary, the film hatches from its pod on Ultra HD with a brand-new 4K restoration and remaster of the original 35mm camera negatives, birthing a significantly stunning and gorgeous HDR10 presentation that greatly improves on its Blu-ray predecessor. Although crash landing with same DTS-HD MA 5.1 soundtrack and supplemental material as before, the overall package is nonetheless recommended for both genre fans and 4K enthusiasts.

A Perfect Organism and A Perfect Movie

Now this is how a monster movie should be made. From the very first shot the music tells you there is something wrong and it doesn't let up for the entire film. More then half of the film is people walking about looking for the alien, and while this might sound boring as all get-out it is chilling. Everything is done well. The characters are pretty much fleshed out or to the very least they are more than in other monster movies. The sets are all dungeon like and creepy, all grey and humid and claustrophobic. The music is there but never overwhelming. What is especially good about this film isn't that they spend all their time trying to kill an alien; it's that you don't know if they will be able to because no one, not them, not you, knows how to get rid of the thing because, well, it's an alien. This 4K UHD presentation is fantastic and marked improvement over the already beautiful blu-ray.

This is a largely incredible looking upgrade, especially in keys areas of clarity, detail levels and probably especially shadow detail. As fans of the film are most likely already well aware, huge swaths of the story take place in extremely dark conditions, and there is a whole host of new details noticeable now in previously hidden nooks and crannies. Overall clarity is also materially improved throughout the presentation, with a really solid uptick in fine detail levels, even when lighting conditions aren't optimal. The improvements in clarity going rather deep into the frame continually impressed me — for just one admittedly mundane example, keep your eyes peeled in the early tracking shots through the spaceship, and when the little "bobbing" toys appear in the background, you can make out details on them that are simply MIA in the 1080p Blu-ray version.

Since most people are familiar with what the movie is about already Ill just speak to the presentation. First, the film is absolutely stunning in 4K. I would say this is a sci-fi masterpiece and has never looked this good. The details in H R. Gigers alien creature are fully present and even show details no other release has been able to emulate. Seeing movies like this in 4K really shows off the ability of the format. On to the steelbook, one of the better steels in a while. Art is amazing and the image of the alien on back shows a multi-colored shifting effect depending on how the light hits it. Not to mention the great price for this release.

    Alien Steelbook

I'm sure by now, most of us have either 2 or 3 copies of this movie. Perhaps in different formats. I have the VHS, Lasedisc, DVD, Blu Ray and now the 4K in steelbook housing. Why you ask? I love this movie, one would have to love this movie to spend much dollars on it. Anyways the movie in 4K is awesome. A little too awesome. To tell you the truth I actually like the VHS and Laserdisc version because this movie was shot in 1979 and technology then wasn't as good as it is now, so I like the grainy look of the movie and true to how it was shot. But that's just me. It's like watching Casablanca or Gone With the Wind in color. Just not right. This steelbook is very cool looking and I love the images wrapped around and in it.

40 year old classic that doesn’t look 40 years old

I probably don’t have to tell you how great a movie Alien is so this review is for the quality of the new release. Alien has been released many times on home video in its 40 years but this is now the definitive version. The 4k quality is superb and makes a classic look like a modern film (or better since everything is too digitized now). There aren’t too many special features but that seems to be trend now. The steelbook is beautiful inside and out and I recommend finding a copy of it. This a worthy rendition of an all time classic. Highly recommended.

Ridley Scott does not disappoint. The 4K quality is unprecedented. The sci-fi horror is cleaner than it has ever been. It’s a fantastic rewatch time and time again, and this 4K restoration comes highly recommended for any fan of the alien franchise

I've owned the previous blu-ray from the Alien Anthology set as well as the 35th Anniversary Edition blu-ray, but decided to upgrade to 4K for this classic film. The upgrade to 4K is tremendous in terms of clarity and shadow detail, and well worth the price for the upgrade. If you're a fan of this film, the 4K blu-ray is an absolute must-own! Comes with both the Theatrical version and Director's Cut, but the Director's Cut on the 4K disc is not all in native 4K. Subtitles on the 4K discs include: English SDH, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, Cantonese, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, Norwegian, Swedish, Thai.

In the distant future, the crew of the commercial spaceship Nostromo are on their way home when they pick up a distress call from a distant moon. The crew are under obligation to investigate and the spaceship descends on the moon afterwards. After a rough landing, three crew members leave the spaceship to explore the area on the moon. At the same time as they discover a hive colony of some unknown creature, the ship's computer deciphers the message to be a warning, not a distress call. When one of the eggs is disturbed, the crew realizes that they are not alone on the spaceship and they must deal with the consequences.

ALIEN 40th Anniv Directors Cut 4K

I was excited to see that one of my favorite films was available as a 40th anniversary release in 4K as both the theatrical cut and the director’s special edition with added scenes. This is a great transfer that reproduces the film quality as I saw the original film in 1979. The image is sharp with good color and contrast. There is very little noise reduction, so there is minor but natural film grain in some scenes. I prefer the original film grain over heavy filtering. The 4K UHD disc looked amazing on my Sony 4K projector and 110” screen with HDR10 and DTS 5.1 surround.

This film being 40 years old first crazy to think about. It is great the studio went back with the Director and remastered it. One of the coolest films I've seen in all my years as moviegoer. Sci-Fi/Horror sums it up. Sure scared the heck out of me as a 9 year old kid. I'm sure I shouldn't have, but older cousins had taken me. Still loved it. The transfer of the films looks fantastic, there are so many scenes in the dark. The HDR is really good here. All the color enhancement are spot on. With the DTS soundtrack it completes the package. One of my favorites. Well done.

    A Sci-Fi Horror classic

One of the best science fiction horror classics of all time I waited originally for years to watch this because it came out when I was too young to go see a R rated movie in theatres. So I read the book first and was shocked and held captive till I was finally old enough to see it and was even more surprised. This is one of the best of the best horror-sci-fi movies ever. Its violent images are still landmarks in scare even in today's horror movies that most of us either stream on the internet or see on Blu-ray or DVD how things have changed.

What is already a fantastic film is made even better by this beautiful 4k transfer of the Ridley Scott classic. Very rich and vibrant colors showcase a stunning upgrade from the prior bluray and dvd releases. Even cooler that it includes both the theatrical and director cuts of the film. A must own for fans of the franchise, for in space noone can hear you scream but in 4k everyone can see you do so in perfect clarity!

Picture is stunning. I don't think they could do anymore with the source material. Features are pretty much everything you've seen before so, that's a downer. I do like the isolated sound tracks. Kind of fun to watch it as a silent movie, taking in the performances and the visuals with just orchestral cues. I definitely think they made the right choice between the two tracks. I paid 14.99 and it's totally worth it as I will probably skip any 4K complete anthologies if/when they come out.

Hard to imagine this film is FORTY YEARS old. With the exception of the Nostromo's computer screens which predate full motion video, the film holds its own. Actually it gets better since the "Truckers In Space" concept works even better with vector graphics. Superb 4K transfer. The one with which Ridley Scott started it all...he states even now he doesn't know WHY it's raining in the Harry Dean Stanton "kitty-search" scene, it just LOOKS good and was the right atmosphere.

If you've seen Alien or have not, this is a great buy! The amazing care of transfer from film to 4k is brutally amazing! I've never seen Alien in such great quality. The sound is mastered and the movie comes with many bonuses. You can watch the 1979 version or the 2003 version. I can hear commentary from the actors and director, isolated score, etc. Lots of hidden gems, as well. GET THIS if you haven't done so. If you have a 4k TV and a 4k player, you're in good hands.

Nice detail on 4K -looks like it was filmed recently, On some scenes though, I actually preferred the coloring tint on the Blu ray. Can't beat the story -classic sci fi at it's best.

The Alien movies are my favorite. I love all of them, even 3. But there is no denying that Alien and Aliens are by far the best in the series. The original Alien is such a great film. And to me it holds up extremely well today. I honestly think I prefer the guys in suits over the CG of recent films, just seems scarier to me. If you have never seen this, and call yourself a fan of Sci-Fi or Horror, you owe it to yourself to see this (and Aliens).

I've seen Alien on the big screen both in 35mm and in this new 4K master's DCP version, and I've owned it on VHS on thru bluray. This new 4K release sits alongside of that aforementioned 4K DCP as the absolute best release of this flick ever. Just watch that "Jonesy!" scene with Harry Dean Stanton to see the deep blacks and HDR just POP. The steelbook artwork is pretty cool too, and it features the original 70mm surround mix as a 4.1 option.

Alien is a prime example of how an older film will benefit the MOST from a 4K UHD Upgrade. The picture quality is pin sharp and gorgeous. And the sound is hugely amplified by the improvements. This is a movie, much like Blade Runner The Final Cut, that just feels like a completely new and refreshed experience by watching it on 4K on my big screen tv. Now we just need Aliens and Alien 3 on 4K!!! You can leave Resurrection where it is.... hahaha
