If you are a hardcore fan of Alien franchise or just the first movie, this is a must-have. This is the best release of this title to date. That said, it is not night and day better than the standard blu-ray edition that came out a few years ago but it is noticeably better in some areas, especially color accuracy and better detail. If you don't own it in some other form or if you are a fan, this is the best release you will find.

Great movie! Love having the digital code because sometimes I’m too lazy to pop in a dvd. It’s really more of a back up. Got this after I bought the amazing Roku brand tv at Best Buy. Looks stunning in 4K!

I own a alien blu rqy already but i couodnt help myself. This blu ray just looked so amazing i had to have this. When I purchased this blu ray i noticed there was some damage so i kooked through the other ones and saw that they all had thus same damage. Its no ones fault but the companies who woukd sell b quality products to distributors but whatever happens happens this was an awesome purchase either way.

Both Best Buys in my area offer excellent customer service and I love the price drops on films that occur... eventually! Got a great deal on this film and I'm glad to make it a part of my growing collection!

As someone who owns the excellent 2010 Alien Anthology Box Set, I I had my doubts this movie could look any better. But once I popped in this new edition, I was floored by the fine detail not noticeable in the previous Blu-Ray set. Facial textures really pop out, as well as some really cool set details I never noticed (the cat bowl Jones eats from has his name inscribed on it.) A must-own.

I've watched this movie several times since it was first released. First at the theater. Later on SelecTV, an old movie channel over the air in the late 1970's and early 1980's. Then on VHS, and later on Blu-Ray. Yep, I skipped the DVD. But it was a real treat to finally see it on a 4K Blu-ray. Glad to have it in my collection. Worth every penny if you're an "Alien" fan.

I saw this when it was first came out in 1979. A few friends and I were supposed to go see Rocky Horror Picture show There were 2 theaters in the same town about 4 blocks apart. We went to the wrong theater and wound up seeing Alien. As the movie started one of the girls said "Its only a preview". Some preview. I did enjoy the movie at the theater and I still enjoy it to this day. :D

Video Quality out of this World

This is a largely incredible looking upgrade, especially in keys areas of clarity, detail levels and probably especially shadow detail. As fans of the film are most likely already well aware, huge swaths of the story take place in extremely dark conditions, and there is a whole host of new details noticeable now in previously hidden nooks and crannies. Overall clarity is also materially improved throughout the presentation, with a really solid uptick in fine detail levels, even when lighting conditions aren't optimal. The improvements in clarity going rather deep into the frame continually impressed me — for just one admittedly mundane example, keep your eyes peeled in the early tracking shots through the spaceship, and when the little "bobbing" toys appear in the background, you can make out details on them that are simply MIA in the 1080p Blu-ray version. Our Forum on this title is virtually exploding (chest cavities beware) with opinions on the color grading of this release, and I have to frankly state I didn't see a huge difference in the overall palette here courtesy of HDR. Yes, there is definitely improved saturation, but in terms of general color temperature, things looked relatively similar to my eyes when doing a side by side comparison with the 1080p Blu-ray (my home theater is set up so that I can pretty much toggle between 2160p and 1080p versions played through two separate players). That said, there are some subtle but noticeable differences, starting as soon as the credits sequence, where the effulgent glow from behind the planet looked slightly more green-yellow to me in the 4K UHD version than on the 1080p Blu- ray. The yellows of the "pod" scenes with Dallas interfacing with "Mother" also have a somewhat more burnished, honey like glow in this version. The most appealing differences to me were in the big final showdown sequence, where the flashing lights surrounding Ripley offer some really beautiful oranges and reds that are considerably more vivid and nuanced than in the 1080p Blu-ray version. Now on to the element which may provoke a bit of controversy, at least with regard to my personal perceptions. I have frequently stated in my reviews of 4K UHD product that I haven't always been totally "convinced" by how grain looks in the increased resolution this format offers. My complaints in this regard have been mostly leveled at Lionsgate releases, where grain can frequently look noisy or swarm like, and where it can kind of hang or freeze in unnatural looking ways. Now, Alien is frequently a very grainy looking outing, and some sequences here, notably a bunch with the white backgrounds of the spaceship, just looked a little odd to my eyes. The "awakening" scene is probably exacerbated by a bunch of optical dissolves, but if you keep your eyes peeled toward the upper section of the frame, the grain kind of swarms and clumps weirdly and just doesn't look completely natural to my eyes. While this chunkiness is probably most noticeable in the more brightly lit scenes, it isn't confined to them — there's a brief view "outside" at circa 23:06 which is swathed in darkness and mist where the same clumpiness accrues. Other viewers may well find the grain resolution well within the bounds of what they feel is "organic", but I personally had a few passing if admittedly niggling qualms in this regard. It never approached the levels of some of the more problematic Lionsgate releases I've personally reviewed, but it stuck out enough to me that I felt it warranted mentioning. All of this said, this is undeniably a major upgrade in video quality, with manifestly increased detail levels and a really appealingly saturated palette. To my eyes, the most significant upgrade here is with regard to shadow detail, which is materially improved in this version.

Alien 4K - HD reference quality

Older movies make better transfers than newer films shot digitally. The colors are natural with the right amount if film grain. The black is sharp and not muddled in what one would expect to be a remastered digital feel. The Atmos soundtrack us phenomenal. Hopefully other classic older films will be released in this form. This format was made for the older films.

The 40th anniversary version has beautiful 4k UHD for both the theatrical and directors cut versions. The directors cut specific content is upscaled to 4k but still looks great. The feel of the movie has been preserved with the graininess of the set. Great version of a great film.

This movie stands the test of time. You know it’s great cause it spawned so many similar copycats and is definitely a road map for sci fi horror to this day...And into the future. It created a new standard that film makers are striving for to this day. It’s a classic in every sense of the word and they topped it with Aliens a few years later.

Yep... I think it's a good/maybe great movie... again... ! If you want to jump out of your seat at dripping water and rattling chains... buy this movie!

Great picture, great sound, questionable artwork for the Steelbook, this was perhaps the biggest leap forward in outer space terror in 1979. Going forward, Alien has served as the template for countless clones and copies. But we all know, there's nothing better than the original which looks and sounds the best since it's original theatrical release!

Alien 40th Anniversary on 4K is hands down the best version of the film to date. The 4K transfer is very well down and looks amazing. The sound is also a standout and really shines on a good surround set up. The special features on the disc add to the value and provide lots of extras. This is a must own for fans of the franchise!

I have not seen this movie yet, and I was blown away by how they remastered his movie. As if it was made just recently. The video quality is outstanding!!! Colors pop and razor sharp images. The sound even thought you can hear the age of this film, has a good treatment too. I say his is a great buy especially if you're a movie collector.

    Great 4k Movie Transfer

An extremely detailed 4K transfer of this classic science fiction/horror film, “Alien” 4K bests the previous Blu-Ray with better, richer detail and HD color truer to the theatrical versions of the film. Is this worth the (in some cases) triple dip? Absolutely with this 4K restoration which improves on the work done on the previous Blu-Ray.

It is absolutely stunning how impressive it looks in 4K. I never thought I could see another movie like this, let alone my favorite movie. The steelbook itself is also pretty cool and doesn't seem as cheap as some other steelbooks I have gotten, but all the extra 40th anniversary extras in this make it worth it.
