Well Designed Laptop at a great price point!

Hello, thanks for reading my review. As a long time gamer and system builder, I have a pretty good handle on what is essential for a smooth running computer, and if you just want a gaming computer that does that, this is one worthy of your consideration. If you want a better idea of why that is, keep reading. Alright - Firstly, lets look at some basic internals. CPU: i7-7700HQ - This is the cooler running mobile solution from intel for a high end processor. It is a touch overkill for current gaming, but an excellent component that will help prevent you from bottleneck issues down the road. Excellent choice Best Buy, 5 Stars! GPU: GTX 1070 - I would say that this is about as large a GPU as you should put in a 15" gaming laptop due to coolling considerations. It will run all current AAA title games with ease at 1080P screen resolution. 5 star component! It also pairs excellently with the ISP panel, speaking of which... The 60Hz IPS 1080P Panel is G-SYNC: My word, I was pleasantly surprised by the color and brightness of this particular 15" 1080P IPS panel. Now, a word to Best Buy's advertising, if you're selling a 15" Gaming Laptop with a 60Hz IPS G-SYNC panel, you ought to make that a big part of your pitch. Nowhere on the website could I find a reference to the refresh rate or the expensive G-SYNC chipset. I had assumed it was a bare bones 60Hz IPS 1080P screen not the higher grade, tearing free, high performance option that I received. Thank you, Best Buy, but don't sell yourself short. Cooling: The fan system is impressively quiet even under gaming loads, I have not been distracted at all during my gaming and have experienced zero throttling. Storage: 128GB of SSD and 1TB harddrive is an adequate solution, it is one of the weaker points as a larger SSD would have been faster but I can't fault a corner cut here, it's not as important to performance. Memory: 16GB DDR4 - Again, like the above, it's totally adequate, not too little and not overkill. If your going to be "just adequate" these are two locations I approve of doing that. The keyboard is very comfortable to type on, they aren't mechanical keys, but they do a fine job with good travel and resistance. It's a little tight for typing but you'll learn to love it. Trackpad: It works and doesn't screw up, I always use a mouse anyways. -------------------------------- The above topics were the core to what makes a good gaming laptop. The next points are the gravy. Connectivity and compatibility - Talk about having all the right extras. This computer has every essential connection including Thunderbolt 3, 2xUSB Type C, USB, and display port. It even has wireless bluetooth which means you can use those fancy headphones without the cords. Best of all, most of those ports are located on the back side of computer keeping the sides uncluttered for a better experience. Chassis - Rock solid, built to the hilt with metal and high quality polymers. It also has RGB lighting that can be customized to your own liking, including disabled for officer workers who moonlight as gamers. Ok, so is there anything about this computer that isn't likeable? Well, if I were to give it one downside, it would have to be the weight. That was a purposed design choice as the additional space was given for better cooling and improved performance without greatly increasing the price. If you plan on lugging this thing to classes all over campus you might want to consider something lighter but it's doable, even if it's not optimal. Battery life is not super great, even with all the ample battery that has been added to this beast. Just keep the thing plugged in while gaming, no one actually games with it unplugged anyways. One of the best purchases I have made in a long time and I can't complement Best Buy enough at putting this system together. Usually I can find something I don't like or that doesn't make sense in a pre-built system but in this case, each and every component melds into a seamless optimized gaming machine for a great price. No corners were cut that drastically effect quality and the overall design is as flawless as I've seen. Well made Dell and well chosen Best Buy! I'll be back soon to see what else you can come up with!

I needed a new laptop since mine was falling apart and I was looking into getting a laptop for multimedia since I am going to major in that field. I was looking into both macs and gaming laptops. I like the mac for the nice sleek design and longevity. I saw in one of my local stores, there was a 512gb macbook pro as a open box a little over $2000. Even though that was a smoking deal, I still waited a week because it was still a large lump sum to stomach for only my productive needs and no gaming aspects. After doing some more research, I realized that to get a gaming laptop with specs I wanted, I would have to order it online. The only one that fitted my needs was the Alienware 17.3 incher they had out on display in their store, and I was not about to settle for something so huge! When I went back having it set in my mind to just grab the macbook pro I saw this puppy in the open box area. It was an online order returned and at 1/2 of the cost of the Macbook open box I was considering! It was like a godsend! I snagged it up real quick since it has all the power of the 17.3 Alienware displayed but in a smaller package. Not only would this suit my productive needs as a multimedia major, but I could also game with this that I knew a macbook would lack in. Best decision ever! Now I have the option of gaming with high graphics games like Witcher (witcher 2 and 3 runs smoothly on high settings!), Mass Effect, and even doing VR. Still learning my programs for music production to truly test the machine. But I'm happy overall with my machine! Built solid and with little issues. PROS: -beautiful display! bright, sharp! -LOTS OF POWER! -love the custom features -less bloatware than other PCs -decent battery for being a power house (3-4hrs of use) -modifiable, can upgrade to 32gb of memory and has 2 slots for m.2 SSDs -includes SSD CONS: -HEAVY, compared to MSI and other 15.6 inch gaming laptops -no touchscreen, music editing would be much easier with a touch screen vs mouse -Alienware FX program used to change the RGB lights for keyboard is GLITCHY, Sometimes lights work and doesnt work. Must restart PC every time they dont come back on from sleep mode -does heat up quite a bit, but also to be expected with the beefy processor and graphics card -small SSD, would prefer 256gb to start

First, the performance of the machine was stellar. This was the version with a 128gb ssd, 1tb hdd and the GTX 1070. Game performance was great - it had the Gsync screen and I had no tearing, AA worked great and the machine stayed cool. The not so great... - When playing older games (TF2, Portal 2) the fans would spin up and while probably quiet for this class of machine, it was too loud for me. Look for the full review on notebookcheck.com and look at the emissions section. - Heavy. The day I bought it I was deciding between the 13" and this, and decided I wanted the 1070, but in the end I wish I'd gotten the smaller machine. - Big. The machine is just big - I had a hard time fitting it in my backpack, and while it was very solid and had great build quality - it was just a bit to move around. - Fingerprint magnet. The soft touch surface for the palm rests and elsewhere really show fingerprints. - I intended to use this as a desktop replacement and then do some gaming in other parts of the house. While battery seemed like it would hold up to 2 hour gaming sessions, a spare power adapter (the main work area would have had it run under the desk) is quite expensive. - You can't have the lid closed and have it plugged into an external monitor and turn it on easily. Older Dells sit in real docking stations and that's great - but I just wanted a usb-c dock and wake on USB. To do this you need to enable it the bios, change the power plan settings to do nothing when plugged in while the lid was closed, allow USB to wake the computer, and then go into the device manager and allow specific USB devices to wake the computer. I couldn't get it to work with a mouse or keyboard, but it did finally work after I introduced a powered usb 3.0 hub in the mix. I have no doubt there might have been an easier way, but I got tired of trying different things I found on line and this seemed to work. In the end, I chose to return the machine. The size, the fan noise and the wake on USB issues were too much for me given the price. I've since decided to wait for the 13" to go back on sale and grab that - at least then the size and weight will be addressed and if I want to do something with tougher games, I'll add the Alienware Graphics Accelerator. Best of luck to those buying it. If you can deal with those issues - its a fantastic machine, but didn't quite meet my needs.

    Awesome Device

So I received my alienware around August 23, with the minor annoyance of my first device being defective so Best Buy gave me a new one. Which was much better. Pros: 1. Build: The build quality is solid on the alienware the keyboard doesn't flex and there is minimum screen flex. I wouldn't worry about dropping my alineware, but there is no way in the world were I'd drop an machine that's $1,800. 2. Gaming: This machine is a beast at gaming the G-SYNC monitor plays game smoothly with out any screen tear. On more demanding games like Elite Dangerous you can get around 60 FPS on 1080p and on moderately demanding games like most shooters you can peak at 143 FPS depending on your graphics settings. 3. Media Consumption: I'd watch any movie on this the 15" screen makes movie watching very comfertable combined with the almost "surround sound" speakers it is quite the enjoyable experience. The speakers on this is phenomenal it gets louder than the fans when gaming. Though this isn't particularly built for netflix n' chill it gets a little hot when the ventilation is covered. 4. Screen: the 1920 x 1080p 15" FHD IPS screen on this provides nice viewing angles. 5. Upgradeability: This system is very upgradable the back is easy to access if you want to upgrade your RAM in the future. You can also connect an Alienware graphics Amplifier to update your graphics driver. 6. Long battery life although if you plan on gaming under battery that would probably give you around an hour. Cons: 1. Weight if you're looking for a system for school use/gaming this is not the one it weighs around 5 bl and let me tell you from first hand experience that it's horrendous to carry around school all day. Get the MSI stealth 15" or the Razer Blade if you want a system for school/gaming. 2. USB ports you only have 2 USB type 3 ports one USB type C port and one thunder bolt port. Not enough ports an average gamer takes up two of those USB ports so that leaves no room for anything else.

I first tried HP spectre x360, and it was not my ideal after first two days. The laptop was becoming so hot and the fan noise was too much that I was not able to bring it to outside. I returned that gear and got this one. I love this computer with following specs: 1. i7-7700HQ (Quad Core, and it's much faster than dual core that I had, my hp spectre x360 was i7-7500U and it was reacting slow) 2. GTX 1070, the best graphic card in my life. 3. The weight (Even though it's still kinda heavy, they decreased about 1.5 lbs from previous one, and my very first laptop was 12lbs.. so I still love 7.5 lbs) 4. Ideal Ram capacity (16GB) 5. Battery amount (99 Wh if I saw correctly?) Cons 1. Weight (compared to ultrabooks which are around 4lbs) 2. The size of SSD (since it's only 128 GB, you have to care when you actually download the software. Make sure that you install to the HDD not on SSD, You need certain empty amount in SSD required to keep it fast) 3. It could be a little bit pricey for people who have limited budget, but I think this is worthy getting. P.S. I love overall design of this laptop. Some people could hate this kind of model, but I desired for this kind since high school... I hope my review could help :)

I am slightly biased on my review of this laptop as I always have purchased Dell laptops in my lifetime. Recently, I decided to try out a different laptop brand because I wanted to try out the "thin" gaming laptops. It didn't work out as I was more comfortable with the Dell chassis and build. The other laptop brand seemed to be too fragile and it did malfunction during the first month of use. I travel a lot, do my school studies, often game on the road and this laptop, the Alienware 15 R3 is perfect for my wants and needs. It is a bit bulky and most certainly heavy but those make up for the solid feel and build. I wouldn't carry this around all day. It feels like a tank! The graphics card can handle the games that I play on it such as Diablo and WoW without any hiccups. The processing speed is more than enough than what I need it for. I've always gone overboard on my laptops. I used to have a Alienware 13R for about three years before this one but the screen was too small for my tastes. I am extremely happy with and would most certainly purchase another alienware when it is time to recycle this one. I am very pleased with it.

This Alienware R15 box is a very solid gaming machine but it weighs quite a bit. It’s mobile and will help build muscles so you can forget the gym membership. CPU- Intel i7 7700HQ is a solid performer. You won’t need to worry here. RAM - 16 GB system ram is plenty of memory for anything you can throw at it. Video Card - 1070 GTX is a great performer. I was running BF5, GTA5, and other current games at High with no issues at all. Keyboard - Standard fair. Works well and the RGB is good. Heat - Cooling is very solid but the system will get to sounding like a jet engine. Others - Alienware uses its’ own bloatware to run the RGB and it is a bit buggy. My problem seemed to be with the Dell drivers failing upon boot. Overall, this is a 4/5 purchase. It’s a very solid worker that is quite a bit on the heavy side.

The SSD is a small capacity and should be upgraded IMO. Right out of the box the Windows 10 system image/restore function was non functional when creating a recovery disk via a USB 3.0 optical drive. Geek squad tried to correct this but were unable to do so using any USB device as the recovery drive. The only solution is to go into recovery mode within windows. The system image can be accessed on a USB device (HDD) and successful restoration can be made then. In the event of a C drive hardware failure one would have to install a new drive, reinstall windows in order to have recovery options, and restore a saved system image. Were USB recovery option viable then reinstallation of Windows would not be needed. USB recovery options have worked fine until the latest build of Windows 10. A new Alienware laptop should work correctly out of the box and if a major component of Window is deficient in any way a fix should be available or knowledge of one being worked on should be available. If you want to use this function be aware. A 3rd party backup solution may be a better way to go.

I received this computer as a gift for Christmas. It definitely has some weight to it but it is sturdy and constructed well. It runs perfect and I like how well the software specific to Alienware doesn’t bog the computer down. As soon as I got the computer I ran a VR benchmark on it and was surprised to see how well it performed. Definitely as close to a future proof computer as you can get. The only con I would give this laptop is the fan noise while intense gaming and the weight of the laptop but that is only if you are very picky. All of the lights you can see in the photo can be individually changed to multiple color types. The face recognition also works very well. I haven’t had a single problem with this laptop and am very pleased with everything it has to offer. It handles every game I throw at it on max settings so far, the most intensive game being Skyrim fully modded for 4k and it runs smooth.

Constant overheating issues with this laptop. 85-95 degree average temperatures on a cpu stress test. Horrible paste job on the cpu and gpu.Dell customer service is absolutely horrible and will do everything they can to try and put you in the wrong. Had 2 techs come out to service the laptop under warranty. First tech fixed heating issues with new heat sink sent by Dell, but he messed up my video cable and caused my screen to not work. Second tech replaced the mobo and fixed screen issues, but the heat issues came back. Ultimately I cannot recommend this laptop, or any Dell / Alienware product, to anyone. I returned the laptop to my local Best Buy because it was still within the return period. Happy to be an elite plus member, because if I wasn't, then I would have been stuck with a leg warmer. If anyone has questions regarding this laptop just reply to my review and I will gladly give more information on why this product is not a good choice.

I got this laptop on doorbuster so I got an amazing price. I play games for 8 hours and the system does not get hot and the fan is quiet. I researched this laptop before I bought it and the system lived up to its reputation. The display is great and shows definition in the game. The sounds is amazing and very clear. I can hear things I did not notice on my older laptop. I love the design and colors you can use to customize the lights on keyboard, side panels, track pad and cover. The weight does not bother me, as for all the features I get for the price it us well worth it. I can upgrade the system when needed so I won't be buying another system for years. I have owned the system for 3 weeks.

I was inspired to purchase this laptop by a show I saw on the internet. They were using this same laptop to stream their show with. When I could afford it, I purchased mine. It is the best purchase I have made in a long time. This laptop is amazing. It is fast, smooth, and handles everything I throw at it without slowing down. If you live stream to facebook, youtube, or any platform, This is the machine for you. It handles vMix flawlessly and can use up to 4 camera inputs without even thinking about it. Best purchase for me! Would be an amazing purchase for you too.... Oh, and it will handle probably any game you throw at it, including 3D..... Peace...

I've been slogging through the last few year with my 2009 mac book pro, holding off the inevitable task of finding a replacement. It has been very hard for me to find something that has a great value to power ratio while still maintaining a high end build quality until now. I was comparing this model with a few others from MSI, only to have the sale rep explain the cooling issues that they currently have. This lap top was out of the price range I was initialing shopping at. After comparing the spec differences it was hard to resist the additional power of the 1070 and current i7. The only con i've had would be getting used to the heft that all these lap tops seem to have. I'm getting used to it, and the added cooling vents/fans seem to be worth the extra weight. Overall I am very satisfied with Alienware as a brand and if they keep this up I will be a lifetime customer.

Bought this to replace my 3 year old gaming laptop. I like to play mmos and I had to turn down the graphics down to the minimum. I always wanted to buy an Alienware and this laptop did not disappoint. I now play the games with highest settings and super smooth play no matter how intense the action or how many players are in the screen. One minus is the lack of Windows install disk. I bought a nvme drive to replace the small ssd and having a windows installation disk would have made it a whole lot easier. Also the alienware help was pathetic and would not help me with issues about transferring the system off the ssd to the new nvme drive and installing the driver. It was under warranty but they said my issue was not covered and I would have to pay them. I didn't and did it myself.

I started off with a MSI GS63VR STEALTH-252 which I did like. My issue with that laptop was I didnt feel overtime the computer was made sturdy enough for me and the speakers were just plain bad. I decided to exchange is for this Alienware. It is pricey but the difference is noticeable in build and just overall feel and quality. PROS- Excellent vibrant screen sturdy durable build Can run anything. Excellent spekers im 44 and it doesnt look like im 1a yr 15 old -(looks classy) Cons- Expensive Heavy compared to the MSI 15'6 Have to DL drivers for the network to stop WiFi connection issues. Overall very happy with this laptop! Love it and worth the extra money.

Almost a great gaming laptop but alienware has lost their edge. The negatives are not failures but mediocre performance on what is sold as a performance laptop 1 is low fps monitor on gaming laptop when they are cheap and easily attained. 2 ram ... knowing many of us are interested in performance they should have put a single 16 gb chip in vs 2 8gb ... now I have to spend more to upgrade , the included ssd is sub par at best with slow read and write speeds and small size. The last is temperature related throttling of the gpu and cpu. With little research it is found that people are replacing the thermal paste and fixing the issues... something that in production would have cost 25 c more per unit. Alienware ... Dell is negating performance over slight profit increases.

Perfect for a poweruser, performs all tasks exceptionally well, and is much more portable than the 17. The matte screen is slightly low brightness but is pretty good to look and has barely any faults. The fans get a bit loud when under pressure but the speakers more than cover it up, and the vents are pretty effective. Keyboard feels really sturdy and can survive a beating. Not very comfortable to use it on your lap for extended times. Ive only played a few fps and racing games and the 1070 has been sailing smoothly even at high settings. AlienFx is bloody amazing. The lighting trackpad looks crazy. Similiar specs at a substantially lower cost are available from ASUS and MSI, but they compromise slightly in build quality and hugely in terms of premium looks.

The first thing I noticed when I took this laptop out of the box was the weight. This sucker is heavy! It also needed a lot of Windows updates so it’s likely it had been sitting on the shelf for a while. It has no numpad so the whole keyboard placement is shifted, which will cause you problems if you’re a touch typist like me. But the biggest problem I had was that the speakers stopped working after a week. I researched the issue and apparently there is a Windows update that can cause conflicts, but even after re-downloading the driver, it didn’t solve the issue. I returned this computer for the MSI GS63 and I like it much more.

If youre looking for a solid well built high end gaming machine, this is it. Games play amazing. I havnt had any issues at all in the day ive had it. The reason why i had to write a review now so soon is to let people know this model, 15R3 with 1070 (cheapest 1070 model), has G-SYNC!! I tried looking and couldnt find any info saying this in the description. Idk if theyre not saying to get people to buy the more expensive models, but its definitely there. Was a very nice added surprise. You wont be disappointed with this laptop. I had the AW 17 before this and remember the bad times i had at first because of network dropping. This laptop has none of that. Not for me anyways. And i been playing Rocket League online all day.

Before I buy this computer I did an in deep analysis of all the gamer laptops of 2017 and this was the best 15" inch laptop overall mainly because one of the main characteristics for this laptop is that it can be upgraded in the future with its external alienware graphics amplifier gpu port. This computer at dell with the same characteristics its more expensive that in here. Also I could use my credit card form another country so this was a great plus. The laptop is great in all the aspects. It feels of great quality in everything. The GTX 1070 is amazing I have been trying several games at ultra settings and all are very fluently. The only cons I got its the low SSD space. But even with the hard drive all is pretty fast. I always dream a laptop like this and now its in my hands!
