This was a rather pricey laptop but it's worth the money. 4k resolution, Gtx 970 graphics card, core i7 processor, the speakers sound good for a laptop and it comes with steam already on the desktop. I did upgrade the 1tb hdd with a 1tb ssd in addition to the already installed 128gb ssd.
I also added the Alienware graphics equilizer with a Gtx 980 to run as an individual graphics card for intense gaming.
I would say the only downfall is the 8 gb of ram, 12gb or 16gb would have made this a sweeter purchase but for about $60 I can upgrade this myself. Also the bottom of the laptop gets a little warm so I recommend a cooling pad.

I would have given this 5 stars but the computer storage drive crashed when i was trying to migrate the info to the SSD i added so downer but not a big deal. It boots up as well as my 15 inch mac-book pro. and the extra M2 slot is perfect too add a 512gb Samsung 950 evo the computer is a little noisy but it handles most games that can play 4k well. Overall a great computer but you need to get a SSD in it quick regardless of that storage capacity.

The Alienware 17 R3 is an impressive piece of hardware. I purchased the model with an UHD display ,i7 6700hq processor, 8 gb ram, Nvidia Geforce 970m, and 1tb hdd with 128 gb ssd. I expected to get 60 fps on last gen games at ultra settings, and maybe 30 fps for current gen at 1080p. I have tested over 70 games on the laptop that range from early 2000s to today, and every game has ran a smooth 60fps/1080p on ultra quality, which came as a surprise to me.
Tom Clancy's The Division even runs around 50-60fps in 4K at ultra settings! For the price from Best Buy, this gaming laptop is definitely worth it!

This laptop is great and looks even better. the only downside is windows 10 has a lot of problems due to the fact that it is new, might have some work to do in order to update all the drivers.

Excellent machine- runs everything I've thrown at it on ultra settings at 60fps. Boots up in about 7 seconds, and runs like a dream.
If I had to nitpick, I'd say that the escape key is a tiny bit loose on the keyboard. I can live with that, as it's still just as responsive as the rest of the computer.
Highly recommended.

Storage options are limited but there are 2 m2 SATA slots on the device which can be put into raid however the OEM drive is a no-name Samsung which is difficult to find outside of eBay. Screen is OK, it isn't glass and has a more matted appearance but the color range and quality is acceptable but only on the QHD model. We purchased this item as an open box via Best Buy for $1100 and that was the "right" price for a unit like this.
The unit stays extremely cool *HOWEVER* the external vents are quite wide and would allow liquid to enter the unit if placed on a unclean/dirty surface. Although the nominal temperatures are lower than on my Macbook Pro 15" the physical temperature at idle is way way higher. Unless the unit is placed on a flat surface or cooling pad it can become QUITE hot.
Overall B+ recommended purchase

I am a photographer and purchased this laptop to help render timelapse videos ( very demanding process ) And it plows right through 90gb of photos in around 2 hrs ( this is very fast ) I also play fallout 4 and once again this laptop delivers.
+ Great sound
+ Fast startup thanks to the ssd
+ Feels well built and sturdy
- Hard to find a bag without going with an alienware bag
- The color temp of the screen is impossible to configure right to get a good white balance ( my photos look great on the laptop but when viewed on another screen they are too cold and are lacking vivid color

I really like this computer. It is well built and has a really good display. It also can play games with graphics. Although Witcher will not play in 4k (it only occupies 1080p of the screen). The keyboard can be customized to be different colors, I have my computer set so the keyboard has 4 different led colors as well as the logos and other led areas and they rotate colors. It was distracting at frist so I had it on just one color but I showed it to my nephew and never changed it back and I'm set. I originally bought it to do machine learning which it does not have the best graphics card but it can accommodate it due to the fans and hardware. It also only has 8gb of RAM which I plan to upgrade some day but honestly, I don't really see the difference yet. Maybe I just don't push it to the limit. It boots super fast, amazing coming from older computers.

This computer definitely has a lot of power! I've used it for a little over a month now and I have not had a lot of issues. The solid state hard drive allows me to boot this beast up within seconds! The biggest stand out feature is the lovely 4k screen! At first I thought the color changing back lit keys was gimmicky but I have grown to like it a lot more. My only complaint is that they did not include a Bluray Player for the price you pay. I generally am not a big fan or Dell but I do recognize quality and this is a great example of one :)! If you are on the fence about getting one....DO IT! Its worth it :)

Went into Best Buy with the intent to walk out with a laptop primarily for my online classes. I knew this was a gamers laptop. Not much of a PC gamer at the moment but when I purchased my first game and gave it a go. I was incredibly surprised by how well this laptop holds up regarding frame rate. Absolutely no lag, but then again I haven't played games such as Doom 2016 or Gears of war 4 on it. The 4K display pulls up old RAW images I have flawlessly and the quality is amazing.
I was a little let down that there is no CD drive on this laptop. Really, who uses those anymore? Well, I still do but it definitely doesn't interfere with what I really needed this laptop for. Would highly recommend this if you're looking to get your first gaming laptop for on the go.

The good:
This laptop is one of the best performance/dollar buys at the time of purchase. Outperformed expectations across the board. Screen is low-gloss, so it doesn't have problems with glare, but it doesn't sacrifice much if any in image quality.
The bad:
As expected and noted, it doesn't include productivity software like MS Office. Also, its got a great graphics card and beefy hardware, so it runs warm - get a good aluminum laptop cooling pad and potential problems will be avoided.

Pretty decent for playing single player games, handles most pretty well. Struggled a bit for me when trying to play certain multiplayer games. About what I expected for a gaming laptop. Would recommend to someone who wants to game when remote.

Bought it to use as my semi-mobile workstation for video editing. The UHD screen is well suited for editing 4k footage, but many applications don't support the resolution yet. Editing videos in 1080p is better on an external 1080p monitor, which I am buying to extend my workstation.
If you are buying it for gaming, the NVIDIA graphics card should come with a copy of Rise of the Tomb Raider, which, at 4k resolution and graphics settings at "very high", stutters and freezes. It would look just as nice played on an external 1080p display (maintaining the high graphics settings) and perform a lot better.
TLDR: The Alienware's power is solid, the screen is very future proof and good for 4k editing, but running games at high settings with a massive resolution causes stuttering problems.

Needed the larger display and faster processor. Totally satisfied. I'm also impressed how quiet it is. With such a fast CPU and graphics card, I expected it would sound like a vacuum cleaner in a dark, quiet room. It's super quiet, and even in a quiet room, I can only sometimes hear the cooling fan start to spin up. Then again, I'm not yet using the most demanding games. Those are coming soon. The thing is silent.
The pictures and specs online indicated 4 regular USB ports, while the Alienware website specified three USB 3.0 and a USB-C socket. The actual laptop is the latter, which is what I prefer.
The only down-side of this laptop is that it's so heavy. It also comes with a beefy power supply, so this thing will be about 15 lbs in your bag. I don't mind. Mine isn't for travelling too much, and I can handle it when I do. The accent lights are a nice touch.
I ordered an "open-box" item to save some money, and except for a slight tear in the box it came in, the laptop really was as good as new (damaged carton may have happened in transit).

Can run Skyrim on Ultra Settings with 60fps. Use it for recording and has almost no latency, certainly not noticeable. Great display, but this thing is a tank. Strong, but sizeable and heavy if that concerns you. I prefer the size and resilience. I got it on open box for about 1500 out the door. Had it for about 3 months, no issues. Definitely worth extra for the 970m graphics card too, compared to the 960. A bit future proof.

Well built and stable. It's runs my games on high quality settings. It's fun to play with the color schemes for the LEDs. Gaming hot keys are customizable and useful. Downsides are few. I feel like the keyboard is tilting back a bit and wind up propping up the back. It's big so hauling it around is a bit of effort. It might be too big to use on a plane for example. But if it's stationary or you aren't going to use it in a small confined space it should be fine.
