I have long felt David O. Russell was one of our best new directors but was unappreciated. Post I Heart Huckabees he really struggled to get a film made and it took ages for him to kind of sell out and do Oscar bait like The Fighter. Though the Fighter wasn't very Russel-ish it did put him back in good standing where the public finally became aware of what a talent he is. He could then be in a better position to get proper Russell films made like American Hustle (messed up selfish narcissistic characters). I mean he's had a renaissance of appreciation over 3 films but Joy might have just jeopardized it. BTW Jennifer Lawrence is great in this movie but someone please notify him that there are other actresses on this planet not named Jennifer Lawrence.

In the opening credits, you're told: Some of this actually happened. From there, the director draws you into a story of deception. In the opening scene, you watch as the principal character (Christian Bale) carefully works on his hair- elaborately covering up his baldness. This is but the first deception. As the story unfolds, there is more and more elaborate deception and intrigue. It's a clever and intelligent story- a black comedy and cautionary tale. Besides the clever story, the 1970s setting is recreated with care- and the soundtrack includes some excellent music from the era. The cast is uniformly excellent- and they play their deceptive roles well. Almost perfect but not quite. A well written story and a movie definitely worth seeing.

This movie has wonderful performances throughout, and stunning cinematography and attention to the time period in which it is set in. The writing is witty and a combination of arresting, filthy, hilarious, heartbreaking, and dubious, as are the characters. American Hustle is about the need for identity, and disguising identity to "get by". The focus of the movie centers on survival by subversion; anyone getting leverage on another by means of deception or deceit, yet it remains light-hearted in tone throughout most of the running time. Better yet, it never gives a position on who is "right" or "wrong", it just doesn't go there and lays it out. The only thing clear is that everything moves forward constantly, and the game keeps shifting and the survivors that come off successful are the planners who can seem the most personal

    Great Acting, Great Setting

Right from the start of the film, viewers are introduced to a robust cast full of interesting, three-dimensional characters. Everyone - from Christian Bale and Amy Adams' protagonists to Louis C.K.'s smaller role as a sad-sack cop - has strengths, weaknesses, and most importantly, clear motivations for what they're doing. And what's more, they're fascinating to watch! That can be a rare thing in movies nowadays. Beyond the cast, the 1970s setting is yet another character portrayed excellently in the movie, with music as excellent as the fashions are unfortunate! Though some people may not find this their cup of tea, it makes the characters shine even more as the audience can relate to these people despite being keenly aware of how far we've come in such a short time. If you enjoy good drama, this is definitely worth your time!

A Bit More Flash than Substance

American Hustle is a fun romp with a large cast of interesting characters, each trying to outplay each other. It's certainly interesting to watch the cast maneuver about and how they react to things invariably falling apart, rushing towards an exciting conclusion. One star off for some of the more aimless scenes that don't quite work (for instance, you can feel the frustration of the editors trying desperately to piece together something worthwhile out of the 5+ minutes of footage of Jennifer Lawrence dancing to music, and it just doesn't quite come together). Still, you can't help but feel for the characters each with their own motivations pulling at each other, and digging themselves deeper and deeper. Who will count on top?

American Hustle is the best film I've seen in years. The plot was funny, each character was a gem, and the acting was superb. I hadn't read about the film before I went to see it, so I didn't know who the actors were going to be. I kept trying to figure out who was playing the lead character, but I never did. When the credits rolled, I was astonished to learn that it was Christian Bale. Now, that's real acting when someone so well-known was not even recognizable to me in that new role. My opinion of Mr. Bale's acting ability really zoomed at that point because I've gotten tired of long-time actors just playing themselves again and again in new films. But, the other actors in this film all did a fine job, too. I'm going to buy the DVD so that I can see the bits of dialogue on captions that I missed hearing at the theatre.

A fictional film set in the alluring world of one of the most stunning scandals to rock our nation, American Hustle tells the story of con man Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale), who along with his equally cunning and seductive partner Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams) is forced to work for a wild FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper). DiMaso pushes them into a world of Jersey powerbrokers and mafia that's as dangerous as it is enchanting. Caught between the con-artists and Feds is Carmine Polito (Jeremy Renner), the passionate, volatile, New Jersey political operator, but it's Irving's unpredictable wife Rosalyn (Jennifer Lawrence) who could be the one to pull the thread that brings the entire world crashing down. Worth watching over and over again. One of those influential films you never tire of.

Purchased this predominantly to get the digital copy, I asked the employee if it came with it, he stated according to the ad it does, and of course it didn't. Still a great movie at a great price.

The art department did a commendable job. The hairstyles, costumes, cars, and room interiors were convincing enough. What was lacking was a plot which would have matched the effort put into bringing the 70s era onto the screen. I was amused by some of the characterization, yet was waiting for over the top humour or insight into the business or a plot twist or something. Sadly there was little if not nothing that blew my mind. Other movies have done the job required of a period piece equally well and fallen to pieces without the support of a strong story but this film was spared that fate because of the names of the cast and director.

I remember the FBI's Abscam sting operation that led to a number of New Jersey politicians being guests of the federal prison system. American Hustle is a very loose recounting of the tale but some of the basic elements are reasonably representative of what happened. Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper and Jeremy Renner all give standout performances. The Blu-ray's video and audio quality are first rate and for the now heavily discounted price this excellent movie is a steal.

    AMERICAN HUSTLE-SERIOUS YET FUNNY

American Hustle wasn't the year's best picture, not at the Oscars and not on paper. It may be the year's most complete picture, however, a joyful yet serious film with complex characters and deep themes built into a buoyant period exterior. One may enjoy the film as a well constructed and endlessly entertaining superficial time killer or as a more thoughtful character study. Either way -- or both ways -- it's an unforgettable experience and one of the year's must-see movies. Sony's Blu-ray release of American Hustle features brilliant video and audio. Supplements are limited in number but satisfying in quality. Highly recommended.

If you're a fan of David O. Russell's films, this one's a can't miss. Although snubbed by the Academy, American Hustle is probably one of the two best films of this past year. Jennifer Lawrence lights up the screen with her crazy, tantalizing character, surprisingly making you want to slap America's sweetheart. Strong performances from Bradley Cooper and Amy Adams overshadow a somewhat forced performance for Christian Bale. And well overlooked, Jeremy Renner provides the perfect bad good guy player. Placed superbly in the 70s in both style and music, American Hustle is one not to miss.

First, let me make clear that I love this movie. I love David O. Russell's work. I love Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, and particularly Jeremy Renner. This film is a heist at its finest, keeping you on your toes to the very end. The cast put on fantastic and highly improvised performances that bring both emotion and hilarity to the film. Overall, it's a great film, but I can't say the DVD and Blu Ray release is as fantastic as the movie itself, because there is little there.

Interesting plot that keeps you guessing along the way. The character interactions are fantastically done. Christian Bale and Jennifer Laurence are great! Very well put together. Although it is a long movie, they keep you entertained and amused throughout. They did a great job at getting you to identify and feel each character's angle and emotions. If you're looking for an action movie, this isn't it. If you like a movie like Pulp Fiction, then you'll likely appreciate the dialogue in this movie as well.

American Hustle is a must see for David O' Russell fans, and for fans of the great cast as well. It wasn't the best picture released last year, but it was a highly entertaining film about the Abscam scandal of the '70s. It's a character study about con artists on both sides of the law, the people who love them and the corrupt politicians being targeted. I think the Oscar nominations, while deserved, over inflated my expectations for the movie and fell somewhat short of those expectations.
