The specs indicate this isn't compatible with Vista; the CD doesn't ship with Vista-compatible software, but it's available as a free download on APC's website. I pulled the plug on my fully-charged unit to see how long it would last running my cable modem and wireless router. I put my laptop on its own battery, and pulled-up an online movie . . . . I gave-up after 5 hours. This unit was still running strong, and claimed to have 2 more hours left. During the initial setup, you may need someone with small, dexterious fingers to connect the battery, though.

    APC is The Best!

You can't go wrong with APC. I have APC Battery Backups on both my PCs. Never had a surge problem and when the power goes out, I have plenty of time to shut down my PC. The price is good for the protection you get. As a PC Tech myself, I can tell you that most all PC failures are related to insufficient surge protection and battery backup. The APC unit even regulates the power to your expensive PC to protect that power supply. If the power supply goes, a lot of times it takes the motherboard out too. Buy one of these. The best insurance money you can spend on your PC. One power supply replacement at a PC shop will cost you as much as this unit. Maybe a lot more if it takes out your motherboard!

I purchased an APC Back-UPS ES 750 (BE750G) on May 10, 2008. Since I had a blackout on 6/27, I figured I could finally write a review. First, this is my first APC, as well as my first battery backup, product. I've owned a number of surge protectors in the past, but since I had purchased a new computer, I wanted to try a backup device. After a deal of research, I finally went with this one, after the value for the money, and the positive reviews APC had received. This model offers 10 outlets, of which 5 can run off of the battery. This also offers a master, and three 'slave' outlets. This means that if the master is off, the three outlets can optionally be shut off as well (helpful for printers, monitors, speakers, ...) It's optional, so you can shut it off (which I did). It also offers a USB connection, so you can monitor the status of the battery using APC PowerChute Personal Edition. Along with charge percentage, it gives the number of volts being passed into it, and the watt load on the battery, which seems to translate into a battery estimate (how long equipment can run). PowerChute offers a couple of options, for when the power goes off - preserve the battery, or keep the computer on for as long as possible. Having had a blackout, albeit at night, I can suggest what I had happen. First, my computer appears to have been put to sleep. When it started back up, SpeedFan began running my two fans at 100%. In short, the battery handled the blackout perfectly. If you're worried about alarms going off at night, there are settings to disable the alarm between particular hours, or disable it entirely. Finally, while this comes with a battery, they do recommend you replace these every three years. You can run self-tests manually to verify the battery. I did have a bit of trouble when first hooking up the battery, but it was relatively minor. (As a guy who's interested in statistics, I would also have liked to have been able to pull more information from PowerChute - for example, via a battery log of what's happening when I'm not at my computer. Granted, it'll tell you when the battery kicks in, but I'd like to know what voltage is being passed, and whether usage watts are spiking or moving throughout the day. What happens when I'm running tasks, or if I have my computer sit for a couple of hours with the monitor off?) Overall, I'm *extremely* happy with this product, and will *definitely* be purchasing another one of these to hook up my Playstation 3 and Sony Bravia.

Living in Florida, my home is subject to a lot of power spikes and brief power outages. The battery back-up is great for my big screen, bluray, and surround sound systems because it protects and the systems stays on when the power goes out. My Tivo was damaged before I wised up and bought a UPS.

I've been a Techo-Geek since the iNet was born. Before it went "Pop- Culture". I discovered the need for some type of Surge/Power Loss protection around '92-'93. I got lucky and started w/ an APC, heard horror stories after friends/clients that tried other Brands. Survived about 500+/- Florida Power Outages and Surges when power was restored and unprotected office TVs or PC Monitors were ruined. Everything protected with an APC UPS always survived. Last MAJOR investment was on an iMac DAW. With that, and supporting Outboard Hardware, I refused to Plug it in until I picked up 2 APC ES-750s. It was a good choice. Power was lost for about 3 hours and when it came back on, all of the communities street lights went POP! Thank you APC! I won't plug in without you! -cMorr

5 oulets have surge protection and battery back-up. 5 outlets have surge protection only. Only 3 outlets are slaved to the master outlet. All slaved outlets have surge protection only and do not have battery back-up. Therefore you cannot have your computer screen slaved to the master, or else you would have no monitor during a power outage. Works very well. It would be difficult to fit all 10 plugs into outlets if you have large plug-ins ie. modem, routers w/ large plugs. I would recommend to a friend and buy again.

Got this unit last year. Best decision I've made in an upgrade to APC products. Had a island wide power outage last week & I must admit this unit saved me a trip to the computer doctor. Without this unit I wouldn't have had enough time to properly shut down the electricity to my home, & God knows what would of happened... Always been a supporter of APC. Do the research yourself. You wont be disappointed.

DOA, but probably not APC's Fault

I bought this in 2012-Sept to replace the same model BE750G from 2004, and even paid for expedited shipping. Unit was DOA, would not charge, gave constant alarm with "Battery is disconnected" error message. Battery did charge from 6V to 9V when UPS was plugged in but powered Off, so battery was not truly disconnected. Evidence showed it had previously been returned and repackaged. UPS Date Code was 2009-05-13, battery was 2009-04-26. Appears this unit had been stored in a warehouse for 3+ years without a battery charge. If these batteries are not cycled at least every 6 months they forget how to hold a charge. I suspect that a new battery would have worked fine in this unit, but Best Buy very graciously accepted my in-store return, refunded my full shipping charge and restored my Rewards points. Kudos for local Customer Service, sneers for improper warehousing of the product. Since these units are not stocked in stores but must be shipped from central warehousing, I would have expected quicker turnover, so perhaps this particular unit simply got pushed to the back of the shelf until inventory ran low. Another unit from another store with a recent date code 2012-March and a 2012-July battery has been working just fine.

    Good Power

I got this one after my last UPS had given up (had my previous model for six years without any problems). So far, this new one hasn't given any problems or broken down at all. The ten outlets gives freedom to provide power protection to more devices than my last UPS. It may seem like a lot of money for something that protects power but the battery inside helps quite a bit when the power is off for more than a flash of a second. Especially if you're working on anything important and don't want to loose it I can assure you.

Great product love the out turn off feature I no-longer need to turn off my printer , external hard drives, ect. The power surge does come with some kind of software and cable to turn detect when you computer has shut down and turn off the other outlets but I found it not necessary when I plugged my monitor into the master port, it even turns off the accessories when the monitor is in sleep mode. The battery backup works great and seamlessly and has already saved my computer one from a power outage. Also the battery is ready to go out of the box no charge time is needed to connect the cables and go. My only complaint came when I grounded my cable for my HDTV to the surge protecter, then my picture became grainy and fuzzy so unfortunately that feature is not for me, but that is defiantly not even problem compared to the good this does.

Back UPS and Mac--So Happy Together

Seems to be a great product; of course, I cannot comment on its effectiveness in the event of a power outage as I haven't experienced one since installing it. However, when connecting it up to a Mac running Mac OS X Snow Leopard, the genius and elegance of Mac OS X becomes apparent. Without having to install any drivers, the Mac instantly detects the presence of a UPS, and places a menu item for it in the menu bar at top right, and the System Preferences panel configures itself so that all settings for the UPS can be controlled easily from the System Prefs panel. What more could you ask? Maybe if it made a nice half-caf decaf latte with no whipped and shaved chocolate perhaps?

    APC Quality backup

Living in the South's thunderstorm belt with lots of electronics, I have lots of APC's in my house. No unit is going to protect against a direct lightning strike, but with power surges and power outages a rather frequent occurrences for 6+ months out of the year it can be a bit uncomfortable having brownouts and short blackouts constantly. These smaller units are great for TIVO and DirectTV units with Hard Drives since it takes quite a long time to reboot after a power outage in additional to the wear/tear on the Hard Drives. This unit can provide power to Modems, Routers, and switches so that the Internet and computer service can power through for up an hour or more of downtime.

I have been using APC products since 2001. Have always been satisfied with two products I use all the time. Made the mistake of moving my laptop off of apc surge protector in one room to another type of surge protector in my living room where my desktop was hooked up on a separate one. Had always run them off apc products, but moved them and had bad storms in my area last week. Two other type surge protectors did not do their job as my apc's had for 5 and 10 years respectively. Both laptop and desktop got surged, so I just bought new laptop and desktop. Made sure I never made that mistake again and bought this big boy. Very easy to setup and install. Worth the money. If I had bought this to begin with I wouldn't have had to write reviews on a new laptop and desktop I bought along with this product. ; )

    works great with 24" iMac

Purchased this unit a couple of days ago. Connected my 24" iMac to it. The unit comes with a USB cable to connect the computer to the UPS. The controls show up under System Preferences - Energy Saver . I am running OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard. No need to install the PowerChute software from APC. Gave this unit over 24 hours to fully charge up, then I conducted some tests. With a 24" iMac and an external Hard drive connected this APC UPS was able to keep system running for about 30 minutes. The UPS status can be set to show up in the Menu bar at the top of the screen. It can display just an icon, or % battery, or time remaining. Under System Preferences - Energy Saver, you can setup shutdown options for the computer. In my test I set my iMac to shut itself down when 4 minutes battery time were remaining. It worked very well, my iMac took about 10 seconds to shutdown automatically. You can also have the system shutdown after it has been on battery for x minutes, or shutdown when there is x% battery life remaining. So far I am happy with it. I suppose I could have saved a few bucks and went with the slightly cheaper model. I was surprised that it kept my system running for so long.

As to UPS for your valuable assets, APC devices are the best. I wish the price would be more affordable and the software supplied with the unit would include the Windows server version but it can be downloaded from the web site. I have tried other vendors but was forced to abandon their UPS due to failures and low battery life. APC is still #1.

I own this battery back up unit. Its great - Saved my computer many times. Have my monitor, computer, router and modem on it. Last week the power went out while I was on line and I just kept working in the dark for about 10 to 15 mins before I shut down and it still had plenty of power left. You can set it up to shut down your computer if the power fails or shut it down each night at a certain time to save power. Very cool equipment. Buy it you will like it.

I had an older APC UPS that the battery just died after 5 years which was awesome so instead of getting a replacement battery, I bought this model for $79.99 on sale. I could not be happier and it supplies protection to all of my equipment and has power savings plugs as well. Keep up the good work APC!

This battery backup has the most outlets, as well as the most battery backup outlet (5), in the price range I was looking for, and all the other outlets such as telephone, network, etc are great to have. I also like the fact that it has the circuit breaker button, as well as well-lit status indicators. The software is a plus, it adds the ability to monitor from pc. The up to 70 minute runtime was also a factor in my decision.
