With the onset of Hurricane Florence, I decided I'd better be as proactive as I could, given my budget and necessary gadgets. I thought we would loose electricity for sure, since I sometimes do even with a storm, much less gale force winds for a sustained amount of time. I wanted to make sure I had backup power for our phones. I already had a battery powered charger that was good for two charges. So, I used the APC to keep that charger charged, and that would buy me some more time. Now that the storm has come and gone, it helps me, still. The computer room stays lit up like a Christmas tree at night. So, I plug the peripherals into a power strip and smart plug. I then plug the cordless phone into the APC, which keeps it operative. Charging pad is hooked to it also and keeps my cell phones charged. Smart plug takes everything offline at 10 pm and back on at 5:30 am. Then the APC re-charges when the power comes back on. This just works out really well for me.

Excellent product but 1st one was defective

The 1st Back-UPS purchased in September was defective. It would work for 2-3 days then cutoff power and emit a high pitched tone until shut off. It had to be shutoff for several hours before it would work again. I contacted APC support via email and they responded in less than a day, giving me a procedure to "reboot" the product. 3 days later the same problem occurred . I again contacted APC support and they initiated a Return Authorization the same day. I received the replacement unit in about 3 days along with a prepaid mailer to return the defective unit. The original product was manufactured in January of 2016 and the replacement unit was manufactured in March of 2016. The replacement unit has been working normally for about 10 days. There are a few other reviews here that had a very similar problem and APC support responded to some of them that some of the early units had issues. So, although I recommend this product, I would check the manufactured date which is on a test datasheet taped to the back of the Back-UPS.to ascertain the manufacturing date. I really like this UPS and recommend it with the above kept in mind.

This is the newer line of APC UPS and the form factor is good, but depends on your application. It is taller than their old design, but smaller foot print on the floor. It has 5 battery outlets and only 2 surge only outlets and this could be a pro or con depending on what you want/need. The battery is user replaceable, but as of now it seems to be a non-standard size battery. I assume it will become a standard size once these have been out for a few years and people start needing to replace the batteries. I just hope the replacement batteries will be a reasonable price and available from 3rd party sellers. The USB charging port is a nice feature to charge cell phones or mobile devices and should be an easy way to keep users from plugging them directly into PC USB ports. These are still wall mountable, which I find a nice feature. However, the template that is in the manual is not to scale so you will have to make your own or measure carefully to get the screws in the right place.

Lets me start off by saying this was a great deal. I bought 2 of them. I intended one for my bedroom to protect a 65" tv with all my gaming consoles and home theater system; the other I have it set in my home office for the computer, printer, wifi, paper shredder. Little did I know that 2 days later there was a really bad power outage. This happened when I was using the computer. The battery back up worked flawlessly, didn't even blink, I knew there was something not normal because I heard the house alarm beeping, I also noticed a soft click coming from the APC unit, when I looked at it the green light that indicates it was on was blinking, so I went ahead and shutdown my computer properly. That same day another power outage occurred, this time, while i was watching tv. Tv did not even flick or nothing it continue playing the movie i was watching. I knew the power was out because the a/c unit suddenly stopped working. I am very glad I bought these 2 units it is one less thing to worry about, and with the technology cost these days it is money well spent.

    Cannot sustain rated load.

I purchased two units, one is working fine with a load of about 85-100 watts. However, the other one was working on a load of 180 watts, and it went into some kind of protection mode and shut down. I reset it by removing the battery, and tried again. A couple of days later, same thing. Tried it a last time, and boom, same thing. Tried it on a different computer, lower load, and boom, shut down. I replaced that UPS with an identical one from Best buy, and sure enough, within a few days, that started shutting down the same way. This leads me to believe its a design flaw. The unit does feel fairly light compared to similarly rated UPS's.

I like the unit because it is space saving, it is smaller than the previous UPS battery I had. What I don't like is the manufacturers of these units using archaic technology, and the run time of these batteries is a joke! The run is only good to safely power down your computer in the event of a power outage, it will not give you enough time to finish a task, and for what these battery units cost that is outrageous! It is inexcusable these manufacturers are using outdated battery technology to produce these units! The very short run time these units have is outrageous! These units are a ripoff! The amount of run time you get dose not mesh mathematically, the run time does not equal to what the capacity of the battery is supposed to be. I do recommend having a UPS battery, but not gleefully! It is something one should have, because you do want to be able to at least safely power your equipment off in the event of a power outage, but for what you get, these units are a ripoff!

Thank you for taking the time to review our BN650M1. We appreciate the feedback. If your unit is not providing the expected runtime, it may be because the equipment is drawing more power than originally anticipated or perhaps there is an issue with the battery itself. Please do not hesitate to contact an APCbySchneider support team if you need any further assistance. Great Power Back-Up for Most Users

The APC does a great job leveling out energy spikes and brownouts / blackouts. It functions as both a surge protector and a battery to keep the computer running temporarily in the case of an outage. The included USB cable allows your computer's power management to shut down the computer automatically in the case of critical battery to keep your system files secure. However, none of these APC back-ups have (in my experience) performed for the length of time that the manufacturer suggests. I keep my 24 inch monitor and my custom PC with a 650 watt power supply plugged into the battery back-up plugs while the printer and speakers are plugged into the surge only connectors. With that set up, I am lucky if I get 5 minutes in the case of an outage. But those 5 minutes are better than nothing. Having used APC and Cyber-Power, I prefer APC. APC units often have replaceable batteries and the aforementioned USB hookups.

I'm not an expert when it comes to battery backups, but I've been very pleased with this product thus far. I was looking for a UPS that includes at least one USB port (check!), one that looks good enough to fit nicely into a second bedroom in my home (check!), and one with a battery capacity that could simply keep our household online for a while during power outages (check!). I'm not burdening this UPS with a heavy load...just an Arris cable modem, an Eero router and an Insteon hub. Additionally, I've plugged a paper shredder and laser printer into surge-only outlets. Everything works as expected and I anticipate the battery will provide significant up time in the absence of power. Regarding the design of this unit: I'm pleased. I wouldn't call it a stunner, but I do consider it to be more "household friendly" than some of the enterprise-looking UPS products on the market today.

I bought this to replace a 10 year old Belkin to protect my home PC, in the end it caused me more headache than protection. If you have Brother printer, be aware! this UPS won't work with printer. No I'm not talking about connecting printer to the UPS. The printer is on the other side of the room, and on a separate outlet. EVERYTIME i print something, the UPS triggers. It begins to make the annoying beep and even worse, it CUTS off my PC power completely. Without the UPS, my printer works fine and I didn't even notice the surge on my PC. So it's worse than nothing! I called the tech support and the guy told me that the power was cut off to protect my PC (what??!!) and I should not put the printer and PC in the same room. Excuse me?!

Thank you for taking time to review our UPS. I am sorry to hear about the issues you are facing with the unit. The UPS is likely going to battery when the printer is running because Brother laser printers usually draw a lot of power. Since they pull a lot of power the UPS would detect the lower voltage and would go to battery. The newer UPSs are sometimes more sensitive which is likely why the new one is going to battery while the old one didn't. I would adjust the sensitivity on the UPS to low or medium to see if this issue clears up. The manual would have instructions on how to adjust the sensitivity. The computer shouldn't be shutting off when the UPS goes to battery. Usually the only time the PC would shutdown would be if the runtime reached 0 or the PC pulls more power than the UPS supports. I would just make sure the internal battery is connected and that the PC doesn't draw over 360 watts of power. If you still having issue with the UPS please do not hesitate to reach back out to an APCbySchneider support team. You can reach us directly at esupport@apc.com. APC

I've only had mine hooked up for a few weeks now, but it has totally eliminated the problem I was having with the power going out for a moment and the computer shutting down. We've had storms come through a lot that affected power only for a few seconds. This provides steady power. No problems with it so far. I did download the Power Chute software and have it connected to my computer to shut it down in case of the power staying out longer, but it's not happened yet so I can't speak to that issue. On a previous computer, I has a similar set-up and it worked fine, though, so I assume this will as well. Thinking about buying a second one to plug a computerized sewing machine into, to lessen chance of damage. Small price to pay to keep electronics safe.

This UPS works perfectly with a Mac. There is no software to load. The OS knows what to do. Simply plug in this UPS to a USB port and the UPS is recognized. Settings are accessed from the "System Preferences" application. Simply navigate to "Energy Saver" then select the "UPS" tab. Press the "Shutdown Options" button to configure when the computer will automatically shutdown. I am using this UPS on my Mac based home network where I use a Mac mini for a media server as well as a home file server and backup server. The Mac mini is connected to a Raid disk array. This UPS powers the mini and the disk array and will keep it running for about 10 minutes.

This is a terrific battery backup for networking and other equipment. I purchased and installed this after a for APC failed following it's 15th birthday. The new APC is smaller than the 1200 I formerly owned. During a recent power outage, it powered my router, DSL modem, switch, and a RasberryPi for longer than the local internet provider's own backup power. I was able to continue to use the Internet service until the service provider's service dropped. My only complaint is that many network power supply plugs are turned 90 degrees to all for space on a straight strip. This APC also turned the plugs 90 degrees which means not much can fit. Be aware there is a similar version to this unit that does not come with a USB plug. I purchased the version with USB.

The last UPS I bought was from the CRT days, so the lighter weight of this unit threw me at first, but after having it activate a few times during one storm and a random blackout, I am happy with my purchase. I have a pretty basic Core i5 machine with a 350W power supply and a 24" Acer monitor plugged into this unit. Both kept humming during the aforementioned outages with plenty of time to spare (20 minutes according to the software) The unit connects to your PC via a USB cable. The included software is pretty nice; it keeps track of when the unit is tripped, how much power is being drawn in real time, and estimated time until the battery is spent. If you want to protect your equipment, take the money you would spend on overpriced 'power cleaners' and get a solid UPS like this unit.

Pros are just that, has 5 Surge/Battery plus 2 Surge Only. USB to Computer for proper shutdowns. (Has already saved me once..) When power went out, everything on surge/battery side stayed powered up immediately. Wire Fault indicator. For me so far, older equipment or power hogs, cant have two or three on battery backup section. Will give audible sound even if power never went off (mine happened with TV and XBOX... Ok until try to play a newer game). This could be a pro and/or con. But it does limit what devices can be used in designated ports. I strongly recommend you read the brochure and wattage information. This seems to be a very good mid range power UPS.. Please note this is based on my experience with it. It does what it says in the brochures. I would not fill up the plugs with power hungry devices.

I bought this for a NAS I was putting together (Synology 418) and wanted it to allow the Synology to be able to shut down without crashing in case of a power outage. This is where my main files are going to live. Not only does it take up little space, but it's able to support several other devices at the same time. And when I plugged in the USB Cable, the Synology detected it and had all the right settings so it can tell the NAS that the power is out and it's time to shut down in an orderly way. If you don't have a high-wattage need for a UPS, this is a great one to use!

Installed on my dad's desktop computer after he had a crash that pretty much wiped out his system. Found out thanks to this UPS unit that his power outlet was not grounded properly. This is probably why his system crashed during a not-so-direct lightning strike. This unit has a light that indicates wiring faults. An electrician came in and fixed it. I was able to restore his system thanks to a full backup I had made a few weeks earlier, otherwise it was getting sent back for service (Windows recovery did not work). I have several of these units installed on my systems and they have proven to prevent system crashes during power outages,

Over several years I have purchased and used a variety of UPS devices to protect our electronic equipment and have watched the purchase prices steadily increase while performance sadly has often been spotty but this one seems to be a good performer and when I bought it was a great price on bestbuy.com The older original design with the wide low body took up a lot of space that wasn't always available. This design takes up less of the usable flat area space and the outlets are more accessible being inline if you mount it below/above a shelf or rack. We experienced one local electrical outage after getting this and it performed as expected and without any delay (and it still has the penetrating audible alarm). Overall happy with this purchase.

I have a lot of electronic gadgets at home and I like to use a battery back-up UPS for my computers, set-top boxes, and gaming systems because it would be disastrous if a power outage occurred during a system update. And if a power outage occurred while working on my computer, I have time to save off my work and shut it down until power returns to normal. I've had really good luck with APC UPS in the past and this one seems as good as the old model it replaces. I really like the new form factor. It's thinner so it can fit in more places on the floor and there are more wide spaced outlets that are battery backed up than on the older models. Time will tell if it will last as long as the one it replaces but so far so good!

I liked the styling of this unit, and I trusted the brand, so I bought four of these to use around the house. I had some issues with one of the units and was surprised that APC wanted to blame me for the problem, saying that a Mac mini, a monitor, and two hard drives were using too much power. Since the mini and monitor sip power, the support tech was basically saying the hard drives drew too much power. I explained that the high pitch alarm had happened four times, and each time, the computer and drives were asleep. The tech kept telling me I bought too small of a unit, but she couldn't explain what five items could be plugged in to the battery. APC used to be top notch, but I'm disappointed in this product and their defense of its limitations.

I stretch this device to the limits.... and I have been glad I have it. I have three of these. Two run computers, but the third I keep with my 4K TV. I don’t expect it to keep my devices up for long, but it does kee things up long enough that I can turn stuff off and unplug devices as needed. I had so many devices that were burnt out not from blackout or brownouts, but from the surge after the power came back on. These devices have helped smooth out the peaks and valleys with the power in the area and I can’t imagine my set up without them.
