Solid Back-UPS from APC

The Back-UPS Pro BN1050M is a capable battery back-up with solid surge protection. If you're looking for a 1000VA / 600W system, it's hard not to recommend the BN1050M.
Some things you should know, the APC comes with a cable that you can hook-up via USB-A to your computer. When hooked up to a Windows 10 / 11 PC, you can see the battery status and adjust your PC's power settings for battery use. The surge is rated for 1103 joules. In addition, the unit comes with a 3 year warranty, $250,000 Equipment Protection Policy. Should you need to replace the battery down the road, you can take out the internal battery and recycle it very easily.
Unlike some prior APC Back-UPS, there is no connection for LAN, COAX, or phone / fax. I can't say I ever used this feature, and I gather APC assumed most users wouldn't miss it.
Performance: I am running a Windows 11 PC with a 750W PSU and a 32" gaming monitor. With my current power usage, the battery got me close to thirty minutes. A far cry from the 98 minutes runtime shown on the box, but well within the fine print on the top. It was more than enough time to protect against brief interruptions in power and to effectively save my data and shut down my PC.
Cons: As I previously mentioned, there is no COAX or LAN port. I wish APC had utilized the back of their unit to provide wider plug spacing. Unfortunately, PC hardware is notorious for having bricks, or wall plugs with odd shapes. As a result, I struggled to get two devices plugged in to the battery-backup and three devices on the surge only connection. Granted, I can't entirely blame APC for this as the device manufacturers determine what their plugs will need. But since there is more space, having spaced out ports would have been nice.
Conclusion: The APC - Back-UPS Pro BN1050M is a solid battery back-up. It's a workhorse that is easy to recommend. I got close to thirty minutes on battery alone. If you need more time, then you might want to look at a more powerful model, but for my usage, the BN1050M works great.
Easy to recommend. 5/5

APC has always been my go to when it comes to surge protection since being able to have nice electronics. I got my first battery back ups a few years ago and APC was the only choice I considered. This is now my third battery back ups and just like my other APC back ups I know it’s something I can count on when the power goes out. The unit has four surge outlets, four battery backup outlets and one data port. I would say my only complaint on this unit would be the outlet spacing. If using standard plugs, you won’t have an issue. But, if you have multiple items with larger plugs you potentially cut the amount of outlets you can use. The unit has a small lcd display with three buttons for power, info and a button to silence sounds.
When you want to make sure your expensive equipment is protected APC has you covered with surge protection. When you need to make sure it’s protected and you can safely shut it down and not loose your info, their battery back ups have you covered on both fronts. With a 3 year warranty and $250,000 equipment protection, it gives you peace of mind you really are protected.

I bought this for back up power for my NAS and our VOIP phone service. It was easy to set up. The power usage display confirmed my estimate that we will have ample time to gracefully power down the NAS and have enough backup power for about 6 hours to run our modem. Another plus is being able to replace the batteries at the end of their useful life.

I got this APC Back-UPS XS (BN1050M) UPS to replace my Tripp-Lite G1010USB, which got hit with a surge and gave up it’s magic smoke to save my computer.
This offers 8 outlets on the back, all closely spaced, so you might want to grab a standard (not surge suppressed) power strip if you have big adapters and a lot of stuff to plug in. All 8 outlets have surge suppression and the 4 on the left have battery backup as well. I wish the backup plugs were highlighted better for messing around under a desk. One of the nice things about my previous unit is the battery plugs were all back-painted in white, so it was easy to find the battery outlets under the desk.
One nice feature this has that was not on any home-sized UPS I’ve owned is “Cold Start”, which means you can turn this guy on without AC power and just run from the battery, which would be great for charging devices during an extended power outage. Some of the higher priced units have ports built in to the unit for USB charging, but plugging in a charger on the back in the rare event of needing to use it for charging would not be the end of the world.
Contrary to the pictures on the listing, this unit DOES have a bright, clear display that has the same information as the bigger units, with nice big LIGHTED rubber buttons to turn the screen on and access the mute button. The screen turns off after a few seconds if you press the right button once. If you want the display to remain lit, you can just press and hold the right button for a couple seconds, you’ll hear a beep and there you go. You get real time input voltage, battery charge level and approximate load indicators as well as any error messages right there on the display.
While not entirely necessary, you can run the PowerChute software with this UPS when you connect it to a spare USB port on your PC to get the most information and useability. You get real time throughput information (watts), battery condition, power failure logging, etc. You are supposed to be able to see your energy usage cost by entering your power company rate, which is nice, but it seems to forget the value when the computer restarts. It’s an interesting feature that can make you more aware of how your computer is affecting your electric bill and the environment.
I am running a gaming PC on this UPS, AMD Ryzen 5800X, 6750XT, with a Gigabyte Aorus Master motherboard in the case and a Dell 27” QHD monitor. When I am gaming and the machine is pulling a fair amount, I will still show 5 minutes of backup available, which is plenty for the computer to shut down before the battery fails. When idle, I show closer to ½ hour of backup, which is impressive. I did test the unit when I had set the option in PowerChute to “Save Battery” and shut down after 3 minutes, pulled the plug, and three minutes later, Windows shut down. I still have battery left for charging devices and it worked flawlessly. I can’t ask for anything more!
Overall, this is a really nice UPS at a good value. APC is the top name in UPS tech, so I feel confident that I’ll get years of service out of this guy.

The first thing to know about this UPS is that it is "only" 600 watts. For most office computers this will be plenty, but people running a screaming gaming beast should get the next larger size. If your computer has a 1,000W power supply, then you should probably get at least a 1,000W UPS. For general desktop usage, my computer draws around 120 to 150W, and the software claims that I can get around 35 minutes on battery. This is plenty of time to save your work and shut down safely.
For best results, the manufacturer provides software that can automate PC shutdown as well as monitor and customize the performance of the unit. The included documentation does not make clear mention of which software is needed, but "PowerChute Personal Edition" is what you should look for. It seemed to work well, aside from not being able to determine if an updated version is available. The software allows many configurations, including how often and under what conditions the unit will switch to battery power if the line voltage fluctuates too much. This is a very nice touch, but most people will not need it.
The way that this works is that the wall outlet provides power for the outlets on the back. But if the power is either shut off or out of spec (too high or too low), then the battery begins to power the unit on four outlets on the back. There are another four outlets that are not backed up by the battery, but they do at least feature a surge suppressor. Inside is a lead acid battery. This is very old technology, and is heavy and bulky, but works and is inexpensive. While some may prefer Lithium Ion technology, that would have vastly increased the cost. While on battery, a "modified sine wave" is provided. This is a level of detail that most people won't care about, and any computer equipment from this millennium should be quite happy with this.
The only read down side to this unit is how the power outlets are arranged in the back. There are eight outlets (four on battery, and four not), but they are spaced close together. If all you are using are power cords then this is fine, but if you need to use "wall wart" power supplies, such as phone chargers or power adapters for routers or switches, there is no way to plug one in without blocking another outlet. But this is a rather compact unit, so there honestly isn't much room to add more space between the outlets. One feature that would have been appreciated but is not included is a few USB power outlets on the back. A couple of USB-A and USB-C battery-backed jacks on the back would have been quite nice to have.
But, aside from the lack of USB ports, this is a great choice. It is from a brand that has been around for decades, and has a reputation for quality. Not only do they make this UPS, but they also make gigantic UPS units that you can find in data centers backing up servers. So this company has history and reputation behind it, and so is a safe choice.

I’m almost embarrassed about how long I’ve been familiar with and using APC products. They’ve been a part of my IT career since I started in the 1990’s and I’ve been using them both professionally and personally since then. So, I’ve experienced APC both before and after they were acquired by Schneider in 2007 and fortunately, it’s been a very consistent journey.
The Back-UPS Pro BN1050M looks very much like my old Back-UPS in most ways apart from color (mine was the traditional IBM ‘putty’ color) and the box opening experience was also almost identical, with the RJ-45 to USB connection cable and most importantly – a printout of the full test results from quality control. In fact, if the whole APC package had not been shipped in a Schneider branded box, I would have thought I’d time travelled.
For my applications, the BN1050M is a perfect fit. I’m not looking to run things on an outage for any longer than it takes to automatically and safely shut down my systems. And that’s where another ‘familiar face’ comes into play; APC’s PowerChute software. It’s always been reliable for me no matter what platform or capacity. I’ve run it on everything from desktops to full size server racks and it just works. It supports Windows as well as Linux among other platforms and is pretty easy to set up and configure.
Besides protection from outages and graceful shutdowns, the other thing a UPS needs to do effectively for me to consider it of value is to condition the power. Again, APC has excelled for me in this respect. I’ve both worked and lived in environments that were close to or in the middle of major manufacturing areas and when factories would come online – especially after weekends or holidays – you could visibly determine when start up was because lights would fade in and out. APC UPS have kept my equipment and my client’s equipment safe for decades.
And when I say decades, I mean exactly that. I have a 15-year-old APC UPS model that I still have in operation. I replaced the battery on the unit 3-4 years ago, but other than that it’s been a solid investment. BTW, battery replacement was easier than I expected, and APC sent great instructions with the replacement. I’m still surprised the battery lasted as long as it did.
In short, I cannot recommend a better UPS brand than APC and I think this unit is a solid entry point for most users to develop a long-term relationship with APC/Schneider. As I write this, many folks in parts of the US are experiencing severe weather as well as power outages. If you value your equipment, this is one of the single most important investments you can make to protect it.

I’ve been having some power glitches lately where my monitors and lights have been unstable, I imagine it has to do with utility work been happening in the area the past few weeks. This was the answer to protect my computer and networking equipment. This size is quite nice, and I like how its vertical unlike some of the other APC units that take up more space laying flat. I’ve used APC units for some time as they’re the premium brand of UPS’s, but this was the first of this type for me to use.
Setup is straight forward and takes less than 5 min to setup as there is not much manual work to do to get it working for basic battery backup services. The LCD is informative and goes to sleep after some time. You have 4 battery backup and 4 surge protected outlets. I will say I wish APC spread these outlets out some more. If you have a larger plug it takes up 2 slots which is taking away ¼ of my battery back options. You can see in my picture I was lucky to get 3 plugs in, at least have one outlet with extra space around it for the larger plugs.
If you want more of a smart UPS that works with your Windows computer, you’ll want to install the APC Serial Shutdown software and hook it up to your PC. This will let you control having the APC automatically shutdown your computer before the battery runs out for extended periods of power outage. A few things the software does:
- Shows Runtime remaining, UPS Load (Also on LCD screen)
- Diagnostics to self test unit to make sure its working properly
- Setup time on battery to automatically hibernate or shutdown your computer
My current load is at 21% with 31 minutes of battery runtime, I set my auto-shutdown at 1200 seconds on battery, which is about 20 minutes. I don’t want to risk it quoting me more time than I really have and it hard shutting down my computer with battery runs out. One of the bigger and better features it has is the AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulation), which helps protect your devices. This is great when using dirty power such as non-inverted generators that can have wide fluctuations in voltage that can damage sensitive equipment.
Overall I think it’s a great unit to protect your devices, has AVR which most lower end UPS’s don’t have, and actually comes with a data recovery warranty if your systems are damaged due to its failure, plus the 3 year warranty is icing on top. Other than the tight outlet spacing, I’m quite happy with this unit.

The APC Back-UPS Pro is a slim unit that provides ample surge protection for 8 outlets and battery backup for 4 outlets. Compared to similar powered units from other brands, this is a smaller footprint and shorter. The construction of the battery backup is top notch. It is built like a tank. The display on the front of the unit provides useful information regarding the power input, power consumption, and how much time the battery will run if the power goes out. Upon unboxing the unit, it prompts you to plug the battery in to start charging. This shows how easy it is to replace the battery down the road if the battery dies. The biggest negative about the unit is how closely spaced the outlets are to each other. Most routers, modems, and other smaller devices uses power transformers which blocks two outlets. If you are lucky enough to have lying around 3-prong extension cords, then you can utilize all the outlets. Out of the box, your devices might limit how many devices you can connect. It would be nice if APC either spaced out the outlets or provide as a bonus extension cords to accommodate wall transformers. Despite that annoyance, the battery backup does what it is supposed to do in a small inconspicuous package that is built like a tank. I have no doubt this will last a long time.

The APC BN1050M Back-UPS is quite heavy and large. It weighs almost 16 pounds and is over 14 inches long with the plugs inserted. Most of the weight is in the battery. The only place I could find to put it where I can see the front is on top of my tower PC. Probably not ideal, but it seems to be doing OK there. If I find I don’t need to see the display I might move it behind the monitor.
It comes with the battery disconnected. I had to pull out the very heavy battery using the flimsy plastic pull-tab and connect the super short wires. Pulling the battery out just a couple of inches disconnected the white wire. The white wire has a plastic cover, so reattaching it wasn’t extremely difficult, but once loose it was hard to tell which direction was up. I almost gave up when connecting the red wire. It is very short and rigid and has to go into a plastic housing with limited visibility. Using pliers and tweezers I finally got the red wire twisted around where I could just barely get it connected, but apparently it is good enough because I didn’t get a battery error message when I turned the power on. Longer wires, a lift up plastic connector protector or a lighter battery would’ve made that part much easier.
The UPS can be connected to a computer via the included data port/USB cable to download Powerchute software to save any open files during a power loss. Downloading the software was convoluted. The user manual instructions were incorrect. I went to the website as instructed, but the obvious software download was discontinued. There were several instruction videos but they were outdated. The last version of Windows they showed was Windows 10. But it was enough to tell me what to look for. I had to physically type “Powerchute Personal Edition” in the search bar and then go to the software tab to find the current download (v3.1.0). Some of the problems might be because the unit I received appears to be over a year old. The certification attached to the UPS is dated 2024.
There are places to plug in 10 devices - 5 with surge protection and battery backup and 5 with surge protection only. Because 2 of my devices (modem and router) have large non-standard plugs, I could only use 4 plugs on each side. There was no way to get both the modem and router plugged into the battery backup side. There is limited space on the back of the UPS so I’m not sure how to better configure the design, but the top plug on one side covered up the data port for the Powerchute download connection. I couldn’t access it without unplugging the router.
The order of instructions in the user manual is 1) connect battery, 2) download Powerchute, 3) connect the equipment and 4) adjust sensitivity. The default sensitivity is supposed to be 3 bars and I only had one. The adjustment instructions are to turn the UPS power off and then press the Power button for 6 seconds to enter the programming mode. Without thinking I followed the instructions, and of course since everything was plugged into the UPS, everything shut down when I pushed the power button. The PC did a hard shut down and I lost internet, Wi-Fi, etc. The sensitivity adjustment step should either be done prior to plugging in the devices or there should be instructions to first shut down the PC and then power off the UPS.
The unit has been running smoothly. The only odd thing is with my laser printer. It is plugged into the surge protector-only side, but whenever I print anything, the UPS powers on and shows the battery level. I will probably disconnect the printer and plug it directly into the wall.
I have reliable power where I live, although we did lose power for several days 2 years ago. The 90 minutes of backup isn’t that useful for a prolonged power outage, but would be useful in locations where the power is routinely unreliable for short periods. If a surge protector only is needed, there are smaller and lighter options available.

I have a few different APC battery backups in my house now and was happy to add this one to my collection knowing what I was likely to experience with it. Thankfully the APC Back-UPS Pro is consistent with the brand for what it does, particularly with the higher end models. Basically, if you have sensitive electronics that you want to protect from power issues and/or keep yourself from getting shut down in the middle of something important during a brownout then you need one of these. I have my gaming computer that has a 500W power supply, a router, 34” monitor, and a printer all connected to the battery backup side of this unit and when I shut off the power while everything was running there was no noticeable change to my devices which was as it should be. It reported on the built in screen that it was on battery backup and estimated about 30 min of power remaining with things running as they were, which would be more than enough time to get things wrapped up and shut down properly in the event main power was not restored quickly enough. This is exactly what this device is for, and it appears that it is a good fit for my type of setup. If you have more things connected to battery or what you have plugged in requires more juice, then you will have less time before running out of that battery so your mileage will certainly vary. But for me with a relatively entry level rig and a few extras plugged in it will more than suffice. When it is running on battery it will periodically beep at you to keep you aware of that fact and thankfully you can mute the sound. It also has a power button and a menu button for cycling through the various screens you can see such as power draw, battery charge, voltage in/out, and a couple of other status icons. It is simple and effective and that’s how it should be. It is also nice and compact, so it easily fits under my desk looking discreet. I think everyone with a desktop computer should have one of these to protect their work and their investment. It’s really a no-brainer, I recommend it without hesitation.

APC builds solid UPS devices and the Back-UPS Pro 1050 is another winner. With mid-range capacity, this is good to keep limited home or small business networking equipment on for up to an hour during shorter power outages.
It comes with most of the features of its larger capacity siblings, most appreciated is the mute feature where you don't need to have it beep incessantly and annoy you during an outage. Even better, unlike many of the smaller capacity units, you can swap the battery out when it starts to fail (generally in 3-5 years depending on usage).
The LCD screen is appreciated and provides estimated load levels and the impact on run-time. All in all, this is another solid UPS offering from APC that I hope to get years of usage out of.

We lose power about 5 or more times a year and wanted a battery backup to keep my Wi-Fi going during these times. I didn’t need a large battery backup, so I wanted to give this APC BN1050M a try.
APC includes software to help safely shut down a desktop during power outages. However, I did not test this feature since I only use laptops. This battery backup includes a silence button to turn off the annoying beeping during power outages. The display is also handy to see how much battery power is left. There is also a load indicator. However, since I was planning on using this to supply power for my modem, router and security cameras, I was not worried about this feature.
There were 4 battery-backup and surge protected outlets on one side of the unit with 4 surge protected outlets on the other side. I was disappointed that the outlets were not spaced out better. The power adapters for the router and modem overlapped the other two outlets. This was even more disappointing since I was unable to supply power for my security camera hub. The battery backup was estimated to last about 205-225 minutes while powering the router and modem.
I would recommend looking at your power adapters before purchasing this battery backup unit. For normal plug wires, this would be a great battery-powered backup.

I recently bought a somewhat high end gaming PC. i9/3090 with a couple nice monitors for it. I have it plugged into a normal outlet so I was looking for something that would help protect my goodies in the event of a power outage or storm surge. These APCs get pretty pricey however I was looking for something mid ranged that could provide surge protection for my PC as well as some backup power should the power go out.
This unit seemed to fit really nicely as far as requirements go. It's sorta small so the footprint of this isn't that big. I have it set underneath my sit/stand desk and I don't even know it's there most of the time. Power wise, the specs on my PC are somewhat high so I'm estimating I should have about 10-14 minutes of power in the event of an outage or something. That's totally fine with me as I don't do a whole lot of data intensive work on my PC and that's still plenty of time to save a file should power go out.
Only real con I can think of is that I have two surge protectors plugged into my APC. These have the right angle plugs so they cover up one of the power plugs on the back of the APC. There are 8 outlets on the back so I essentially lose two of them having these surge protectors in there. Not a huge thing though I would've liked the ability to have these two remain free even with the surge protectors plugged in. For now, they're fine and I still have 4 outlets remaining.
For me, this works about right. It's small, provides protection for my equipment and is moderately priced considering other alternatives out there.

My first impression when receiving the APC - Back-UPS Pro BN1050M - Black was "Wow, this thing has some weight to it!" I opened up the box, and was immediately impressed with how well they packaged it. That initial positive impression stuck with me as I pulled the UPS out of the box as well. The APC - Back-UPS Pro is very well built. It's plastic, but it doesn't feel cheap at all. The instructions state that before use there is a battery inside that needs to be connected. The instructions have a little drawing that shows the door that needs to be opened, but the fit and finish of the UPS is so good I had to put my reading glasses on to find the seams for the battery panel so I could open it! The quality continues with a really nice display on the front of the UPS that shows the state of charge, the voltage, how much power is being drawn by what ever is plugged in, an estimated time the UPS can provide power to said items based on the current draw etc... All of these settings can be toggled through using one of the top 3 rubber buttons which also include an alarm silence button, and a power on off button. On the back of the unit are 8 power outlets 4 of which are surge protected, and the other 4 are battery back up. Over all this UPS is a clean looking, high quality device, that I have faith will do its job and prevent my computer from being shut off if we experience a power outage or brown out. At least long enough for me to save my work and shut everything down properly. I would definitely recommend this if you're in the market for a quality UPS unit.

There is very little to report with a good UPS such as this APC Pro BN1050 model . It just sits there waiting for the dirty power to quit or surge. You have 4 surge outlets and 4 battery backup outlets. And a good informative digital display. Everything is well marked and easy to understand. And while many may not want to pay for a UPS for the few times a year the power might blink from a passing storm. It's a bit more than just peace of mind. It's also about making sure the electricity going into your devices is also safe energy for delicate electronics. APC UPS are just good peace of mind for a decent price.
The APC BN1050M has 3 buttons, the third button to the right is used to wake the "display" (not shown in stock photos) to see all the info one could need about power being used or battery level still to go based on what items are plugged in. Will also show number of events in case you were not home or awake when the UPS did it's job.
This is my 5th APC UPS and this one has enough wattage that it can handle my TV, cable box, and amp for about 15-20 minutes. I have other APC's dedicated to my router, modem and a projector in my small home theater. It's all just enough to give me time to power down devices if the power is going to be out for awhile. Or as the UPS term means, Uninterruptible Power Supply to get through those few seconds when the power blinks in the rural area I live in. APC is THE brand I trust for my UPS needs.

This APC is strong enough to power my WiFi-Modem-Router and my portable home phone base easily and for a fair amount of time. That's basically communication for an hour(s) plus only - my phone & Wifi system - really important if the power goes out. The tiny instructions were too tiny to understand the red battery power had to be connected to the UPPER not lower battery connection. It helped to download the 18 page PDF instructions. The front LED panel is really helpful, but instructions are a bit vague. The thing works well when the top three button-lights are lit and not blinking. The 'plug your devices here' holes in the back come in two vertical rows: A) power from the wall power only & B) powered from the wall power and also backed up by the APC battery. Don't get them confused.

Great battery backup, bought one as a replacement for another unit that died. Works fine for a computer and networking equipment.

The APC Back-UPS Pro BN1050N is a power solution to help keep your devices safe (from power fluctuations) and powered up in case of a power outage. This device simply keeps power constant without any dips or spikes in the power delivery. Constant power is important to me as I want to keep my gaming PC and network devices protected from power issues and this has an automatic voltage regulation system that helps with that. The over-all case design is slim and has a footprint that easily fits under my desk. On the rear, there are a total of 8 power plugs, 4 provide battery + surge protection and the remaining 4 provide surge protection only. The plugs are oriented in a way that doesn’t really let you use devices with large power bricks since without taking up two spots. Some other APC devices usually have one plug with a gap around it so you can plug a larger brick in, but this is all close together. Regular standard power plugs you will have no problems though. My solution was to use a short extension cord to overcome this downside.
Another great feature is the fact that you can easily replace the batteries on this without much hassle, and that will greatly extend of life of this for years and years. The current battery will most likely last about 3 or so years as does with most APC batteries that I have used in the past. The PowerChute software was a little confusing to find on the APC site since this particular model was not even listed on their site, but you just need to use PowerChute Personal Edition 3.1.0 (at the time of this writing) and it will work perfectly. The software is configurable for what you need this to do. For example, you can set it to gracefully shut down (they word it Hibernate) your PC when there is a specific amount of time left in the battery or if you want to turn it off at a different time. Energy cost / C02 emissions and kWh per day are displayed for you as well as estimated battery time based on current draw. APC is a very reliable brand and I have been using them for years without any major problems. We also use the very expensive units at work to protect our data center and network gear, so I have a lot of faith in them.

Still working strong several years later. I have bought cheaper models that the battery just dies after a year or so. I would buy again when needed. I have a computer, two monitors and my router attached to it, no issues.

This is the only brand I've ever bought because IT WORKS and has NEVER failed us - not even when lightning hit the ground in the yard and the neighbors house next door. If it was time to replace an old one I got the new updated version. When my son needed one for his new gaming setup - this is the one we got. We live in SW Florida so summer storms are severe and these things will (click) catch a surge and on the computer, Xbox, watching TV - it won't flinch - JOB DONE! I work from home and the internet it hooked to it so we don't lose internet on a surge. I have them on all TVs, kid's gaming setups, etc. I don't even need to look at other brands - this is it!
