DO NOT BUY the new M4 16GB Memory - 256GB SSD unless you only intend to watch videos and check emails. This DOES NOT have memory to do any photo or video editing. Only work around is move non-Apple apps to SSD and launch from there. Spend the extra and get the 32GB.

I upgraded from an Intel Mac Mini, and the M4 Mac mini is like night and day: many times faster, plus a tiny footprint compared to the old “silver” Intel model. Apple gave the machine a design overhaul from its M2 with the 2024 refresh. The M4 mini measures just 5 inches by 5 inches — more than 40% smaller than my prior-generation Intel model. It takes up much less space on my desk, and has impressive performance in that super compact package. With Apple Intelligence and the M4 chip, Apple stopped using 8GB as the base amount of memory that Macs ship with, and upped it to 16GB. The base M4 Mac mini has 16GB of RAM as a result, making it super fast and a great deal for a desktop machine. It runs the new IOS 26 with plenty of memory to spare for applications. You do have to supply your own display, keyboard, and mouse, but it's so small that I can easily move it between desktop setups at home and work. Because it doesn’t have any ordinary old style USB ports, I had to pick up a cheap USB-C to USB-A hub for 15 bucks, so I could attach my existing keyboard and mouse. There is an option to upgrade to the faster M4 Pro for those who need more power, but as a software engineer with fairly intense computing needs, the base model gives me everything I need. It has three Thunderbolt 4 ports, where the M4 Pro sports Thunderbolt 5 ports with faster transfer speeds, but that’s frankly only useful for intense video editing. The base M4 model does routine video editing without breathing hard. There are also two USB-C ports with 10Gb/s transfer speeds at the front. Compared to my prior-generation Intel Mac mini, the M4 models are 5 times faster in terms of CPU speed. If you're looking for a desktop Mac, the base Mac mini is the best deal that you're going to get. The performance is more than enough for day to day tasks and even gaming, photo editing, and routine video editing, and that price tag really can't be beat.

First I got this on sale at Best Buy with my Best Buy Plus membership for $499 - sweet! I'm not a power user, just your average guy. I don't do video editing, music production, or gaming to any serious degree but pretty much everything else. This little thing rocks. I'm coming from years of PC experience both from light IT work to heavy office usage. I don't much care about being bullied by Microsoft into Windows 11 and figured if I had to learn a new GUI may as well go all in on Mac. I have used Mac for some music editing and production but not as my primary computer. Has there been a learning curve, oh yeah, but it's been relatively painless and I have found customizations to make it a bit more Windows like, but hey I chose to go away from Windows so I haven't changed anything, just learned Mac. As far as the machine itself is concerned my wife was gobsmacked to learn that this little box was all my gargantuan desktop was and more. It's compact, quiet, boots quickly what more can I say. The only downside if there is one is the lack of USB A ports, even some USB 3.0 devices use the USB A form, but an adapter takes care of it. Just means your desktop is a bit more cluttered, particularly if you hook up a USB A hub for your other peripherals. I am a tinkerer and loved to replace and upgrade my PCs, not so this little guy, there is nothing user accessible, but hey I'm ok with that as it's spec'd for what I need. If I need more than this on a budget then it's definitely going to have to be filled with a PC as Mac gets stupid expensive for RAM and storage upgrades. Having said that am I nervous about storage, 256 gb - not really as external storage is cheap and with Thunderbolt danged near as fast as internal storage at least for most uses. I have loaded all I need to load to include some music editing software, etc., and I haven't used half of the storage and don't see ever running out. I use an external drive for backups and file storage. Us old computer users who grew up with miniscule hard drives are used to keeping things decluttered and neat. I have also learned through hard knocks that it's always best to keep things backed up on an external drive, Do I recommend it, you bet. If something happened to it I would certainly replace it with another just like it.

I tried to test the mac and I can proudly say that it sucks. (there is 1 plus, my headphones and Wi-Fi did not need to be connected because it is one ecosystem.) CONCLUSION: we throw it into a box of junk.
