Perfectly suited keyboard option for iPad Pro

There are a lot of options out there for Bluetooth keyboards for iPads. I’ve tried out a lot of them and they just don’t seem to work as well as I would like them to. When I got the Smart Keyboard for the iPad Pro, I wasn’t sure it would be worth the investment since it’s a bit pricier than other keyboards in the market. I’m glad that I was wrong. The Smart Keyboard is great for many reasons. First, it charges directly from its connection to the iPad Pro. This in itself is an amazing feature because I can plug the iPad in to charge and the keyboard gets charged, too. Second, the keys are butterfly keys, which means you make a stronger connection with a lighter tap and your fingers can actually travel faster than they can with other keyboards. I noticed this quite a bit when I switched from a 2014 MacBook Pro to the Smart Keyboard. I immediately thought that I was getting my work done faster and as it turns out, I was. Third, it doubles as a screen cover and stand for the iPad Pro. Even though there are other keyboard options out there, I don’t think any are as suited as the Smart Keyboard is for the iPad Pro.

I waited too long to purchase this keyboard. Writing with the Apple Pencil and using speech to text is no match for the Apple keyboard. Easy to attached by magnet. Design is sleek and lightweight. Great product so far.

I had no idea it was going to be so versatile! It's futuristic in design. I'm an Avid typer, blogger, Admin of Pages and it magnetically connects right onto my ipad! I've noticed when I'm getting into chatting sharing blogging I get my work done fast and I have so much fun doing it! When they call last call wherever I'm at (mostly at home) all I have to do is turn that screen off AND MY KEYBOARD TURNS INTO A COVER THAT TURNS MY SCREEN OFF FOR ME!!!! I LOVE THIS KEYBOARD along with my Ipad in rose gold. I have the Apple Pencil as well! All I'm going to need for the next 5 plus years. Sink your teeth (not literally unless you want) into getting one of these cuz there will be days you just want to set it up at the table and type. I'm lovin it!

    Average keyboard, poor durability

Nothing above and beyond here for an apple product. The keyboard itself is great, however, the limited versatility and lack of Apple Pencil carrier reflects seemingly thoughtless design. The material quality is comfortable, but lacks durability. I transport my iPad within a new North Face backpack with a fuzzy-lined pouch specifically designed for tablets. That being said, the side seam of the keyboard began fraying within about a week. After having used the smart keyboard for a few months, I would happily switch to an alternative 3rd-party iPad Pro keyboard given the chance/funds.

Feels like a full size keyboard and I love that it is fully encased so no crevices for crumbs and dust to fall in. Keep in mind this is a magnetic attachment. Pretty strong magnet but not foolproof.

    Purchased September 1, 2017

I purchased a new iPad Pro 10.5", Apple Pencil, and Smart Keyboard at the same time in September 2017. The keyboard was starting to work intermittently over the last week or so, but now as of 04-23-19 it has completely failed. The biggest wear areas, on the keyboard seem to be at the flexible hinge. The magnets that click the iPad and the keyboard together seem to be still working correctly. But the 3 pin connector seems to have become faulty. Over the years of use I noticed how easy metal chips would get stuck to the magnet connector causing gouging to it on the keyboard along with damage to the iPad itself. BTW all my keys seem to function with no trouble until today. I hope this helps someone but I have say for an Apple product I am very disappointed. I cringe at the fact there isn't a lot of great options out there for a keyboard for the iPad Pro 10.5 without issues and will have to purchase another one that will have issues in less than 2 years. So I ask what does this do for the environment? Can it be recycled?

I bought this keyboard for my wife. She loves the lighted keys and uses it everyday for her new IMac. She prefers this keyboard over the apple magic keyboard that came with the computer. It was easy to setup, perfectly matches the computer color, and is easy to see the keys, especially in low lighting. I also purchased it for a nice price. Thank you!

Tilt back and pop up. But not in a good way.

Overall, the quality and ease of set up is good. Until you use it. It had a huge design flaw. The folding section is thinner than the section with the keyboard and the section connecting to the iPad. Therefore, when you set it up to use the keyboard, it tilts back and flips the keyboard into the air about a quarter of inch. I first thought, I have a defective item because I don't recall the one on display doing this. I returned to the Apple area to take another look — along with the keyboard cover and my receipt. The display version set flat. After closer examination, I discovered why. I'm sure a sales associate did this... a small folded up piece of thick paper was taped down to the table top so the keyboard remained flat. I never picked it up to exam – I was more intrigued with how well the keyboard responded and worked. However, when the keyboard flips into the air, you can't hold it down to keep typing and it makes it impossible to actually use it. Unless you have your own little "doorstop" to brace the back section. Once nice, accidental feature (because Apple never mentions it) is that there is enough magnetic force to hold the Apple Pencil Gen 1 to the cover. You can comfortably pick it up with no worries of the pencil rolling off. So buyer beware. Apple should be ashamed for releasing this. This is not Apple quality. Someone at Apple said, we must compete with MS Surface... get it out the door. At least that's what it feels like.

    “Good,” not “Great.”

Apple, in attempting to avoid kickstands and touch pads, has crafted a “decent,” but not world-beating solution to a problem that has plagued the iPad since it’s creation. The lack of an external keyboard powered by the tablet itself. Sure, there have been Bluetooth solutions and I have used more than a dozen since the iPad first hit the market. Some have been good, a couple even great. But the same challenges have plagued them all... The need to charge frequently, added weight, lack of quality. Well the iPad keyboard is a “decent” solution to those three challenges, but fails in a few other areas. First the good... It’s light. It adds the least weight possible to the iPad without sacrificing durability. The multi-fold design, while wonky, adds the critical back support required to keep the iPad at a usable angle, even perched on knees. No charging. It behaves as a USB attachment to the iPad, so the iPad powers it and the current draw is minimal. It adds a cover to the iPad, so there is screen protection built-in. Now the not-so-good... Key travel is abysmal. I might as well be typing on cardboard. Key spacing is tight. It feels cramped. You’re not going to write “War and Peace” with this thing. You’ll get carpel tunnel first. The iPad has a tendency to perform odd capitalizations with this keyboard that do not seem to occur with Bluetooth solutions. (Example: If I move the cursor with the arrow keys and then go back to correct a word, the first letter might be automatically capitalized in the middle of a sentence. This does not seem to happen with my X360 Bluetooth keyboard, so the question is... Is this an iPad thing, or an Apple keyboard thing?) The angle is fixed. You can’t adjust for position. The keyboard is too close to the screen. After literally decades of typing on laptop keyboards that provide at least a little distance from the screen, the unnaturally close distance with the iPad keyboard feels odd and you are always conscious of it. Is it worth $150? Not by a long shot. Look for one of the X360 Bluetooth keyboards on the market and you will be more satisfied. They provide more flexibility, a better typing experience, and the need to charge is a small price to pay for the kind of comfort you will need to use the iPad to its fullest, most logical conclusions.

    Perfect combination

The Smart Keyboard is the perfect combination to the iPad 10.5. It really keeps the weight down (compared to other keyboards), instantly pairs with the iPad and keeps in line with a minimalist design. It may not be the “best” keyboard available, especially when compared to more robust models that have real keys, but it does everything I need it to do for a portable device. I don’t really “travel” with my iPad or have a dedicated room in the house for media consumption or work, but single device combination of the iPad and Smart Keyboard allows me to grab and go from one room to the next or outdoors seamlessly. My favorite feature is simple: you can remove anytime without having to fuss about removing the iPad’s case or put it back on with a quick magnetic “snap”. Yes, it is much more expensive when compared to non-Apple keyboards (but everything that Apple sells is the same way) which allow you to do what it’s meant for - typing. Yes, you can definitely live without it and go with an much more affordable Bluetooth keyboard option. But for me, the convenience of having a detachable keyboard that folds into 3 modes (keyboard mode, presentation/movie mode and sketching/on-screen typing mode) and is easily detached/re-attached makes it the perfect combination to the the iPad 10.5. Not even the newer Pro model Smart Keyboards can boast multiple modes of use or the ease of attaching/detaching as this one does. My only gripe is that the front of the Smart Keyboard (i.e. when it is attached and closed over the iPad) does not feel as premium as it could be or even should be, especially given the price point. They should have done a much better job to enhance the feeling of quality that most other Apple products convey. Having said that, the newer Pro model Smart Keyboards feel so much more cheap than this one and makes me wonder how they will hold up to a practical user’s 6 or so years before they upgrade. Quality = 9/10 Value = 1/10 compared to other basic keyboards Ease of Use = 10/10 (the keys WILL loosen up over time and your typing will become more accurate and close to how you type of a regular keyboard)

This keyboard just works , but at the expense of protection. If you are someone who takes care of their stuff and doesn’t share with little kids , you can’t go wrong with this keyboard. The alternatives may be a bit cheaper and offer more protection but this one doesn’t need to be charged EVER due to the new connector on the the new gen iPad and it is nice to type on , covers the screen , and folds behind when you don’t want to use a keyboard all while adding barely any girth. Def recommend for as long as you are part of the target audience for the product.

Bought the iPad Pro for the fact it can have the pen and keyboard options. Really needed a keyboard as typing on the phone or screens has become hard for me. Love the ease of connection, that it wraps to keep the screen somewhat protected and the stand it provides for the iPad. Really happy I decided to purchase the keyboard at the same time i got the IPad.

I owned the 9.7” and 12.9” iPad Pro models, and had the respective keyboard covers. Neither of those felt comfortable typing on for anything beyond a quick email, text message, or Facebook reply. I’m impressed with the keyboard cover for the 10.5” iPad Pro. The material the cover is made out of is a slightly better feel, but what is the most important, is the vastly improved key feel when typing. The keys are easier to depress than on the previous models, and provide a satisfying feedback when depressed. I find I have used this new keyboard cover more in the few months I’ve owned it, than I did the others in an entire year of ownership. The 10.5” size, while not a truly fullsize keyboard, is very comfortable to use, unlike the 9.7” keyboard cover was. For those who have never used one of these products, I think you’ll enjoy it, and for those who have used a previous model, I think you’ll be delighted with the improvements Apple has made to this newer model.

This keyboard works very well with my 10.5 iPad Pro. It’s compact and works as I expected it to. I did buy a separate case especially designed to work in conjunction with this Smart Keyboard to protect my iPad Pro and house my pencil. Pluses - I like that it puts my iPad to sleep, it’s lightweight compared to other keyboards I’ve tried. The keys feel great and are responsive to my touch and I don’t have to charge the keyboard separately. It gets it’s power from the iPad “smart connection”. Cons - The keys are not backlit and I can’t balance it as well as I could with a more rigid case. But those are cons I can live with.

Really like the keyboard, it makes typing on the iPad significantly better than the on screen keyboard. Just snap it on and type away, very easy to setup. Can get much more work done with the iPad than I could in the past. My only complaint is that the way the keyboard folds up and out is a bit complex. It does allow the iPad to be used in different angles but I think the Surface keyboard is much more natural in the way it folds up and out.
