You just plug it into your Apple computer and it works - no visible installation or "mounting device" screens. It's slightly bigger than standard sized optical discs. I wish there was a physical eject button but, I guess I'll just get used to using software to eject. Aside from the speakers, it's the only other part of my iMac that makes noise. It scared me the first time I ejected a disc from it. It spits out the optical discs in TURBO. My children love it and I don't mind since the discs do remain in the drive just enough not to hit the desk.

While we all know Apple is trying to make optical media go the way of the floppy disk, there still large numbers of us who like to move music from our library of CDs into iTunes to load onto our portable devices and to watch the occasional DVD on our computers. You have to have this external drive in order to be able to do that on modern Macs. This drive has Apple's usual excellence in design and execution. It's styling matches current Apple hardware and nestles on the foot of an iMac stand perfectly. I've also used it with an older Mac whose optical drive had failed with no problems.

Sorry to be boring in my review, but this is an Apple product - it "just works." It delivers without complications, and it does what it advertised it would do, while looking great. I was surprised that an external DVD player was needed, but when I learned that they were the weak link in the options (one of the first things to give problems when internal), and I remembered that this was one of the reasons I needed to replace my almost-10-year-old 17" MacBookPro... it all made sense. And by being an accessory, it will be more adaptable with other Mac items. Smart. Of course.

This drive is just another fine piece of machinery designed by Apple that fits in perfectly with the iMac 27" 2020 desktop I just bought with it. The drive is a slim stainless unit all around and has a heavy weight to it so it won't slide around on your desk when inserting disks. The drive itself is very quiet more than many other brands I have used such as Dell etc. The drive is another but TOP NOTCH APPLE EQUIPMENT.

Using this drive on a MacBook Pro with macOS and with Parallels hosting Windows 10. The unit functions perfectly for the Mac and in Windows. The unit has been able to read a large number of different formatted and sized discs. The unit is constructed well and easy to us. No disc eject button, but done through the software. The only downside is that you need USB A to USB C converter if you are using a Mac with just USB C ports.

Small size of superdrive fits nicely on the base of the iMac. The drawerless design for CD's is great. Easy hook up with built-in USB cable.

Since Apple no longer includes CD drives on their desktops this is an option for those of us still in the 90s and early 00s. I have seen a lot of negative reviews about this drive and I can say mine works fine and I have burned CDs and dual layer DVDs with no problem. It is fast, maybe a little loud but it is external and I expected that. Matches the desktop perfectly and looks sleek. I leave mine hooked up all the time, but it does offer portability as it simply plugs into the USB port.

APPLE SURE KNOWS HOW TO DESIGN A PRODUCT. THE APPLE EXTERNAL DVD/CD DRIVE IS NOT ONLY BEAUTIFUL BUT OH SO FUNCTIONAL! THE BEST THING ABOUT IT IS THAT IT IS SO PORTABLE AND CAN EASILY BE USED WITH BOTH THE I-MAC, THE MACBOOK PRO AND THE MACBOOK AIR! GREAT PRODUCT! THANKS APPLE......

I bought this because physical media seems to be going away and it does exactly what i need it to. I have a M1 mini and a M2 macbook air and both hooked up to it seamlessly and I had burnt dvds in no time. No issues.

It works great though I don't know how long it will last. It doesn't have a removable cable that seems like it may break if not handled carefully. I am not sure if it breaks I would have to replace the whole thing. I like the fact that I can carry this around whenever I need it but it's probably better to use it for home use. I bought this to pair with my macbook air and it's nice. I would make sure to use on a flat surface, not when you like to use your laptop on your bed.

Is this a Super Duper SuperDrive?

I bought the Apple SuperDrive external drive to access files that had been saved on CDs and DVDs. The device works well with my MacBook Pro, however, I was surprised that supplied cable required an adaptor (also provided with the purchase) to plug into the MacBook's Thunderbolt 3 ports. Not enough use time to assess its durability. Quiet operation.

The MacBook Pro is a super, compact, lightweight, powerful piece of technology capable of doing many things. Since not everyone has the same needs, in order to keep the MacBook slim, light, compact, and a bit lower in price, some accessories - some capabilities were not included in the final product. However, with the addition of the SuperDrive External USB one has access to DVDs and CDs. A MUST for me!

I wanted a small, light laptop computer, but wanted to be able to enjoy my DVD movie collection as well. The Best Buy rep listened to all of my concerns and gave me several options. This drive has worked like a charm and is very convenient. I am an older user and so tend to do things in ways that are familiar and understandable. A very good product in either case (whether technologically challenged or not)!

I was torn between this item and another brand selling for half the price. We had just upgraded to an iMac desktop computer, but weren’t ready to abandon DVDs altogether. Granted the other drives were priced better, but I am so glad I chose the Apple SuperDrive. It’s streamline look means I can leave it out. No need to pack it up and hide it in a drawer after use. Also, like all things Apple, it is so easy to use. Feels like it will last for years!!!
