    Works - seamless media integration

Works out of the box as expected (plug in the HDMI cable, done, it just works). Really nice for playing music, renting movies or TV shows, showing youtube videos, etc. The coolest feature is that you can "throw" stuff on there from any ipod, iphone, or ipad that is on the same network. For example, "here, listen to this song" or "hey, watch this video". With the iPad 2 and with iPhone 4S (and up, presumably), you can also mirror the entire screen -- so show any app on your TV. And of course, you can use your phone or iPad as a remote control for it - also nice. Only con: does not have Pandora integrated, and the mirroring does not work for regular iPhone 4 and before or 1st gen iPad.

    Great Product...Lacking in Features

I've had this a few weeks now, and it's a decent product. I use the HDMI cable through my receiver and all in all, it has a good picture and sound quality. Airplay is a nifty little feature. Before I would tie my laptop into my TV and receiver to play a movie I had downloaded. Now all I have to do is turn on Apple TV and then hit the Airplay button on my iPhone. Or, Apple TV ties in nicely to my home computer where all of my movies and music is kept. The only issue with connecting to the home computer is if iTunes is not open on the home computer (my home computer is always on), Apple TV will not be able to stream music or movies. Apple being true to form though just will not put things on there that people use the most! Stuff that is free, like HULU. They give you Netflix, but Netflix just does not have the quality that HULU and some of the others have. Because Apple limits what you can and can't use, that is why I give it 4 stars. The Apple TV product works great. I have not had the issues some people have with streaming Netflix.

Outstanding Media Hub When Paired with iPhone/iPad

The Apple TV by itself is a great way to rent and watch movies or TV shows via iTunes, watch Netflix streaming content, watch YouTube or Vimeo videos and listen to Internet radio. But when paired with the iPhone or iPad, it's outstanding. Now I can BUY movies through iTunes, put them on my iPad, start watching them on my HDTV, then pause and resume watching them on my iPad or iPhone in some other part of the room. (The advantage of buying movies, of course, is that I have more than 30 days/24 hours to watch them, and can watch them as many times as I want.) The free Remote app on the iPhone & iPad make using the Apple TV a breeze. What I love is that I can be watching one of my iPad movies on my HDTV via Apple TV, and then switch to the IMDb app on my iPad to look something up, without disrupting the video. I also especially love the portability of the Apple TV -- the box is so tiny, all I have to do is unplug the HDMI cable from my living room TV, unplug the power cord, move the box to my bedroom TV, plug in the HDMI cable and I'm set. All that for $99 makes it an amazing deal. The only thing I wish it had was a Web browser like mobile Safari. (Is it possible that there will eventually be apps for the Apple TV like there are for the iPad / iPhone?)

This is the best thing ever!!

I purchased Apple TV to watch instant Netflix movies and TV shows. I am not a very tech-savvy person, so I assumed that I would have problems setting it up. SO not the case. It was as easy as plugging into 3 places, and following the user's guide and on-screen directions. This is probably one of the best things I ever bought! There are so many shows and movies to choose from, and I've been recommending this product to all of my friends and coworkers. Just be sure to purchase a HDMI cable, so it will work for you. Luckily the Best Buy rep mentioned it to me, so putting all of it together was a piece of cake!

    Excellent Product that works seamlessly

When I took back that horrific WD TV product I listened to the Best Buy clerk and a few other people and picked up the Apple TV. I have a hard drive with over 100,000 songs on it and 170 movies. This product is AMAZING. I ran into an issue with it finding my hard drive and then shutting off after a couple songs. After speaking with Apple TV support I was informed that Windows 7 has some firewalls in it. They sent me an article on their ports and once I opened up their specific TCP and UDP ports it works seamlessly through homesharing on Itunes. Once my wife and I move I will be getting a second Apple TV to hook into my basement. I absolutely positively love this product.

Excellent Addition to My Apple Family

Great device, while it is nice to say you can download and look at pictures/movies/tv shows on an iPod Touch or an iPad, with the push of a button, I can watch it on my TV. That to me is well worth the money. You can also play your music library through your entertainment system (assuming your TV is connected to it, if not, it is through the TV speakers) or use any of the music channels on there. I have not used any of the built in applications (aside from YouTube) yet but based on the YouTube experience and the streaming from my PC's in my house I would imagine that would be quality as well. I have not had any issues with this device yet; I have owed it for 2 months and have gone through the IOS upgrade with it. The USB port in the back is NOT used for additional storage as an FYI.

What's really great about the apple TV's is that they are THE Hub for streaming your iOS content to your TV. If you buy into apple infrastructure (ie iPad, iPhone, iPod touch), you will enjoy how seamless the experience is. Working in the Education Technology arena, we've been amazed at how seamless Apple TV's are in the classroom combined with iPads. We are pushing this consumer technology across our campus. On top of having access to all of your iTunes and iOS devices, the Apple TV has (in my opinion) the BEST Netflix user interface. If you are Netflix user, you will appreciate the simplicity that Apple brings to Netflix. I haven't tried out any of the other services like MLB and NBA, but if Apple has it on their apple TV, there has to be a certain quality to it. Sure there are things with "more features" that will "play every single media file," but what you are purchasing here is "the experience" of media at your fingertips.

Best Media player at any price

I bought this to use on my bedroom Television. the user interface is awesome and it works better than my Ps3 at playing media files. The Apple TV will remember where you left off and play you're file from there or the begining , even if you wait a week. The unit is really small and the power supply is built in so you don't have to worry about where to put it or hiding a power brick. The remote control is very simple and works just fine. I like this so much that I am selling my ps3 and buying another apple tv. If you don't play games or blu-ray then you don't need to spend the money on a ps3. This will play anything that iTunes can play including music and photos also. Plus if you tag your files with metadata you can see the info in the Apple TV menu.

    Works great with iTunes wirelessly

Use it to play my iTunes from my computer and my phone works great. the streaming from other sites work well but most you have to pay extra for. I don't have a hdmi tv but i did hook it up using a hdmi to component converter and it works great. Got it on ebay for $32 if you have a mac with a lot of photos and music then i would recommend buying this.

It took a while for it to arrive, but now that I have it, I love it!! While watching movies and videos, and listening to music and internet radio, I cannot believe that it was for only $99. I just signed up with Netflix, and I love that Apple TV can stream movies. Now I can watch all I want, as often as I want, although personally I think they should have a broader selection and I did have some problems watching a movie because it kept stopping. Other than that, it's the best money I've ever spent.

    Great product for the Money

Great product for the money. Had a little problem with interferance on my network. It seems my kids Turtle Beach head sets for their Xbox's run on the same frequency as the apple TV, so there was an inital problem streaming. I figured out that all I had to change was the channel in the set up settings for my modem (Netgear) and the problem was fixed. Has happened since. It seems quite a few items in the house (cordless phone, wireless headsets etc,) run n the 2.4 ghz, therefore interfereing with the Apple TV. Apple TV does not have a setup preferance for changing its channel, so your forced to change the channel on your modem. I have not had any problems since...Really do love this device..! I steam my itunes to my home thearter, movies, photos and even airplay to it from all the iphone we have and the itouch my younger son has. The boys love it, as they can airplay stuff from their phones to our home sterieo, which is why we bought it in the first place. Being able to share everyones itunes libarary an upstream to one source is just amazing..! Thinking of buying another one for our bedroom...! Lots of fun...!

Very good product with some glaring shortcomings

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Overall, Apple TV is a great product for anyone who keeps a lot of digital media on his or her computer. I bought it to replace my Air Port Express, which I used to use to stream music. The interface is very smooth, and it is fairly easy to get used to. Overall, for the same price, if you are considering airport express and Apple TV, spend the money on the Apple TV. Biggest complaint - no volume control for streaming audio and video. Whereas I used to be able to control the volume when streaming from my computer to Air Port express (and I still think I can), you can't do it when you are using Apple TV to stream. Another complaint - I know apple wants me to buy their music, videos, etc, but it MUST get better integration with Pandora, HBO to Go, etc. Netflix is simply not good enough. I know they probably never will get there for competitive reasons, but it only makes sense. In fact, although I can stream HBO to GO from my iPad / iPhone using AirPlay, it only streams audio. Let me stream ANY video please and I'll be happy. Still, with those problems, it is a great way to get music, photos, home videos, netflix, etc... from computer to tv.

    Very good purchase

I'll start on a bad note but this in now way is a slam on the product...I am still very happy with my purchase: I'd say my major complaint is that you can't really use Hulu and things like that from your computer. You basically have to use iTunes or other AirPlay apps. I'm assuming they don't want you to use Hulu because you wouldn't buy episodes of TV shows from the AppStore. I like using the iPhone to mirror to play games like Family Feud on screen with other people. Also nice to stream YouTube videos to the screen via iPhone or directly from the Apple TV since it is already built in. Kinda cool if you are just messing around on the phone and run into something on YouTube that you want to watch, you can just push it to the tv. One other minor downside -- the AppleTV can only remember one wireless network so if you take it to someone else's place, you gotta do the network config all over again. Depending on how long your WEP/WPA key is, that can be a bit painful with the remote. Same deal when you get back to your home network....re-do the network config again as if it were new. Product itself? Awesome purchase for under $100

Best way to view Netflix streaming

This is way better than any other Netflix streaming device. Plus, if you have an iPhone or iPod touch, you could use it to navigate AND type! And if you have a Mac at home, you could wireless stream your iTunes and iPhoto library for viewing pleasure on your big screen and home theater system. Did I mention you could watch YouTube videos? And that all of this is included for ONLY $99? No complaints here… at least for now, anyways until they come out with the next version. I read rumors that it might have app capabilities later on down the line. That would be AWESOME!

Very Cool for iPad and Mac Users!

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

If you own an iPad or Mac, this device allows you to wirelessly stream photos, video and music to your TV and the integration is seamless - your Apple devices recognize ATV as an output as soon as it's joined your network. I use the free Apple Remote iPad app to control ATV which is great when you need to type for searching. I almost didn't buy this because there have been complaints of instability with Netfilx, but my service has been flawless and the video quality is great. The menu interface is sharp and easy to use, and the device was easy to set up. It's literally the size of a hockey puck and for $90 a relatively inexpensive way to add online music and video channels along with Apple device integration to your home entertainment network. The only request I would have is to see additional channels added but between Netflix and ATV (which is PPV) on top of my FiOS subscription, I think there's always something to watch. :) Definitely recommend this but would advise you try and find out if there are Netflix/ATV issues in your area.

    Awesome for Netflix!

This product is really good and awesome! And all these reviews are true, but in order to enjoy this product you need reliable high speed internet. I live in the rural area and use a mobile broadband USB on a router to give wifi and hey, its the best I can do as DSL and Cable companies have skipped 4 streets around me and never bothered to try installing internet here. But back to the apple tv, it takes a long time to load as I have slow internet, and the only problem I had is that I get a TON of errors when I try doing the Home Sharing feature, which I thought it be cool to watch the movies on my laptop, but what's the use if I get error for everything I try connecting. Then the mirroring, and awesome feature, but the only way for it to work is through wifi, and all the apps work fine, but when I try to use the internet it takes forever to load, especially youtube. I have sprint for my iPhone 4s, but I don't get to use that fast internet because it uses my wifi instead......... This is a great product overall and I highly recommend it to everyone, but it works a TON TON TON better when you have fast internet.

    great with iTunes Match

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

At first I was excited to get this just to stream music and videos from my iphone. Then I signed up to iTunes Match, and wow. I can now stream all of my music directly from the cloud without tying up my iphone. Netflix is also a plus, but I get 1080 (i or p, not sure...) quality from the Netflix app that came on my Samsung TV, so it's not as attractive to use the apple tv for that. Although, the UI is soooo nice, if we're just watching Portlandia or something without special effects I'll use the apple tv with it's 720p. One set-up note, my stereo doesn't have optical audio inputs so I purchased a DAC for $25 from Amazon to play music directly without first going from HDMI-to-TV-to-analog out-to-stereo. That way, I can turn off the TV once I've selected the music I want to listen to and just enjoy the music.

My brother got one and our entire family was amazed at all it could do with music, pictures and movies on your own laptop. Then my brother got my dad one for his birthday. He came over to my parents house to set it up and I bought one on the way home from my parents house. I have to say, it is the best thing I have ever bought! I love it more than my iPhone. Yeah I said it. I love this thing!
