    Great 90's Independent Cheese

Arcade is an interesting, even though cheezy, 90's scifi/horror film. A teenage girl and her friends find a brand new game at their local arcade that promises the ultimate AI challenge. Her friends try the game, then vanish. When they don't resurface, she is left to unravel the mystery of a deadly video game. About a quarter of this film takes place in the game itself while the rest is outside of it with some bleedover between the two. The Special effects are sort of dated and parts (like the riddle puzzle) are predictable. The acting can be stilted and the entire script feels rough about the edges, however, that's part of the charm. This film is steeped in 90's goodness from the sunglasses and hair cuts, a young Seth Green (of Family Guy and Robot Chicken fame), video game violence paranoia and one arcade that's too cool to really exist. Arcade isn't high art, but if you're looking for a cheesy 90's thrill ride you're in for a good time. It's less commercial than the Wizard yet still captures the fears and excitement video games held in the early 90's. It's one of my guilty pleasures.

Highly recommended to watch. Special effects will seem really dated but it's a fun film about a VR program that loves to kill it's players.
