Grounds all over the place

Not a good grinder because it makes a mess. When it stops grinding, there are still grounds in several places in the grinder, including up past where they go into the holder.
I removed the grounds holder and a large quantity of them fell into the space where the holder had been. I didn't fill it, there is no reason I can imagine for them to not have fallen into the holder.
Once I cleaned that mess up, there were also grounds on the top inside the burr section.
I followed the instructions. No idea if this is a defective unit, but I doubt it as it is pretty basic gravity fed system.
