    HORRIBLE Product

I bought this to replace my old Linksys (which was no longer compatible with Comcast). Six frustrating days and several calls to both Comcast and Motorola, this unit did NOT keep a wireless connection to the internet in my rather small apartment. Wish I could have read the reviews before I purchased, as this is seemingly a constant complaint about it. Why would a company ignore that and still release the product with no fixes? I exchanged it for a Zoom unit instead. Completely trouble free. Save your money and avoid purchasing this.

Great modem... If your willing to restart it daily

This is probably the most inconsistent modem I've ever purchased. Speed is strong 60% of time on laptop, 20% on iPhone. At first, called cable company and blamed them so they sent a tech out 3 times and couldn't figure it out, and since it was their modem, the effort minimal. Called Motorola and they helped a little bit with the laptop connection, but for the iPhone, they said it was a compatibility issue. I pay for 50MB/s and only 2.5MBs on my apple products most of the time. If I restart it then I get almost the full 50 for a couple hours. But after that, it's back to 2.5 again while at the same same time, my laptop is showing 45+mb/s. So everyday, annoyingly, I unplug for 10 seconds to make sure I get a strong fast connection.

    Horrible, my second one now

Didn't want to pay the rental fee from Comcast so I went a bought the SBG6580 router. Was okay for the 1st few months, then the wireless began to drop constantly. Had to recycle power to the modem to restore wireless. From there it gradually got worse to the point where it constantly dropped the Comcast signal. Thought I just had bad luck, so I went a picked up another SBG6580. We're only several months into this one and it started again. Exact same symptom. Called Motorola support, there were HORRIBLE! They kept blaming "line signal", when I could clear proved that it wasn't the line signal, by plugin in a different modem and everything worked fine. IF I HAVE A CHOICE, I will never buy Motorola cable modem again...certain NOT SBG6580.

Prior to buying this modem/router I was renting the one from my internet provider which was absolutely terrible. They charged me $10 a month to rent a modem/router that would constantly drop signal and was a headache to work with. After having this product for a year, it already paid itself off and I dont plan on buying a new one for another 4-5 years when the internet provider requires higher than a DOCSIS 3.0

This modem/router works great! We can have more than 1 person on the internet and it is no problem! The price is good, but way cheaper than renting one from the cable company, and works so much better, and faster!!

    Good wired, lousy wireless connection

I bought this as my cable gateway to Comcast, and liked the idea of having just one box for connectivity, but after setup, realized that the wireless range compared to my previous Medialink wireless router didn't measure up. I have 2 HD TV's with wireless internet video streaming capability that worked fine with the Medialink wireless router that now were unable to connect with enough signal strength via WiFi to work at all! Even though they discovered the wireless connection from the Motorola SBG6580 ok, the signal was very poor, and video streaming was not possible. Keep in mind that the HD TV's were only 32' and 35' away in a wood framed house.....shouldn't have been much of a challenge in terms of effective range! I have since replaced the SBG6580 with a Motorola SB6141, and use it with my Medialink router without any problems. On another note....Motorola's documentation is very poor for a consumer based product.....and their phone support wanted to charge me $30 for just instructions on how to set a simple wireless security password! Needless to say, I figured it out myself! Stick with a simple wired cable modem rather than this model, and use it with a separate wireless router for best performance.

Pros: Motorola quality, easy to setup and use, all in one unit, everything needed is in box.. Cons: SUPERCALAFRAGALISTICALLY AND UNREALISTICALLY OVERPRICED, WIRELESS RANGE SUCKS !!! If you do not care for the single unit, get separate modem and wireless router for lesser cost and better operating range. I just HAD to get all in one unit.

In the month that I have used this product, it has worked great, except for midnight. For the past couple of weeks around midnight, it looses signal and it won't connect until like two hours later. In this world, the internet has to be running round the clock and never stops. The set-up took about two hours and it was working fine.

I was very close to returning it because like other reviews have said it frequently dropped signal. Drove me nuts! I was constantly restarting it in hopes to get it working again but it was super inconsistent. But I called up my cable company to take a look at everything before I did so. He tightened up some loose connections in the companies equipment on my building and I haven't had a dropped signal since. I love the fact that it is a modem and a router.

    Router is worthless

We upgraded to the Motorola DOCSIS 3.0 SURFboard Modem about a month ago and kept our Cisco router (several years old). We had little problem with connections. This weekend lightening took out the modem and router so I went back to Best Buy and bought this combo product thinking the integrated router had to be as good as our old Cisco one. Wrong! Immediately my sons (one upstairs and one downstairs from the floor the router is on) complained about the slow connection and drops. In my bedroom and family room, on the same floor, Netflix degraded into a standard picture (at least it wasn't stuck buffering). We only received 2 connection bars in the bedroom which is 2 rooms over from the router. After reviewing the connection speeds on the hardwired computer, troubleshooting with Comcast and reading reviews off many sites, I've determined the router is worthless. It doesn't make sense why they would package a quality, higher end modem with such a lousy router. We are going to the store tomorrow to buy another stand alone router and then disable this function on this product. Maybe will even upgrade to AC?

Beware of problems down the road

At first, I was very happy with the all-around performance of this modem. Aside from the slightly clunky interface and the auto default ON 'IP Flood detection' (which will slow your modem drastically) I didn't have any complaints...even with the once or twice a day random disconnect. Now, just over a month later, I am fighting DOZENS of daily disconnects. It has gotten so bad that I can have 8+ disconnects every hour. Comcast says the modem signal strength is excellent. They also said it is likely a hardware problem with the modem. So a word of warning to anyone considering this modem. It may work great for awhile, but it also may cause you endless frustration with continual disconnects and reboots. Good luck!
