this gateway was purchased so we did not have to pay the lease fees, this has worked very well for our situation. i am a network administrator in the national guard, but i found the set up extremely elemental. i need a very stable system for my wife to use when i am tda, and this has given us reliability

By far the best wireless gateway I've ever used. Setup could be easier but not too bad.

    Drops connection

We have Comcast and were using a modem and separate (Netgear) router for years and never once had a dropped internet connection. We bought this because Comcast kept calling telling us that our modem needed to be upgraded if we wanted our full internet speed. We have had it for a few weeks and our internet connnection/wifi has dropped twice already. We have to get a pin, reset the modem, then it won't work until we log into the motorola gateway and change our internet name and password back to what we originally decided on. It's a huge pain! I was in the middle of a meeting at my house and had no wifi to show some things I needed to on my computer. So... the product works well until it drops your internet connection, which so far appears to be often.

    Great when it worked

Decided that $7 a month for a modem made no sense when I could buy my own. Under the advice of the Comcast rep at the store I purchased this all in one wireless juggernaut, his words not mine. After calling Comcast to have them record my MAC ID, I setup my modem/router (very straight forward) after about 2 hours of use the problems began. I constantly lost the signal to all of my wireless devices, causing me to enter the password multiple times even though I did nothing different to my initial setup. After about a week of this, a few Comcast technician visits and me wasting time constantly re-entering passwords, I returned this device and got the traditional router & modem (DOCSIS 2.0) that I had previously.

    It really doesn't work... Really...

I wish I could give it more than one star because, in my opinion, the rest of it is fine. It's a home device, and for that, it actually does quite a lot. There are a couple of quirky things that make no sense (like the prompts for changing the admin password is totally beyond comprehension), but that's not the issue. The issue is that a great idea, and a great company, put out a product that's a bloody disaster. My experience matches so many others. Works great, then stops. Once it stops, it's about as useful as an AMC Pacer (sorry Pacer enthusiasts :-). Mine started failing by the wireless component simply disintegrating. It stopped working all of a sudden, but not for every device. But if you could connect, it wouldn't necessarily pass you through to the WAN. If you couldn't connect, the failure would be unreachable device, no response or your PSK is wrong (it's not). After hours tweaking it and coaxing it (to the point of removing all security and threatening it with bodily harm), the wireless came back to life (but I also had to rename the SSID... Huh?) This was a short-lived victory (if you can call it that) since after that, it went to the next level and started dropping the entire cable connection multiple times per day. The only recovery is to pull the power and let it reconnect. Then you have internet for anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours. Unacceptable even if you didn't have electricity. No chance for redemption, and the dream of the space and outlet savings of an all-in-one is toast. replacement will be a stand-alone modem that has reliability (like it's Motorola brother) and a router like a Netgear.

    Not ready for prime time

I bought this to replace an old, stock Comcast modem. It was advertised as a top of the line Docsis 3.0 modem gateway, with a built-in wireless router. If only. Unfortunately, after a week of fiddling and several hours online with Motorola support, this product did not meet expectations. It failed miserably as a wireless router, and was inconsistent as an internet connection for a Panasonic DMB-BD85K Internet-ready Blu-Ray player. I must give kudos to Motorola customer support, though. They tried, tried and kept on trying to make the wireless router work properly. I disconnected the 2.4GHZ phone. We adjusted every adjustable setting. We changed the encryption to the least secure; we turned off the redundant firewall. We set the wireless to Channel 11 instead of 1. "That didn't work? Try working down the list (10, 9, etc.) ..." Alas, no channel gives more than ten (yes, 10) feet of wireless coverage. The Motorola's wireless signal cannot be detected beyond the room, despite the fact that a Netgear N300 router can penetrate 3 floors successfully in my home. As a last resort, I attempted turning off the wireless entirely and just hard-wiring the product to the Blu-Ray player. Neither of the two TV shows I downloaded from Amazon VOD played all the way through. I ended up disconnecting and reconnecting the ethernet cable, and grabbing a different one from another from my DSL router upstairs. Same problem with the second cable. Funny, though, I watched two TV shows without a hitch with the Comcast modem + a G router. So it's almost positively not the Blu-Ray player's issue. Sorry, Motorola. It's going back.

Best wi-fi cable modem, worth every penny.

I was tired of paying at&t for a wi-fi hot spot. So I switched to time warner. I did some research and found out if I bought my own wi-fi cable modem, I would save about $10 a month on equipment fee's. I bought this modem, walked over to the time warner guy in the store, got the $29 a month plan, scheduled the cable install, cable guy showed up on time at my house and in less than 30 minutes I was surfing the web on my chromebook and playing on my Xbox live. No complaints from me.

Setting it up was easy, except for wanting to change the security settings (passwords). When I called Motorola to get some help, they told me it would cost $30 for a one-time answer. Yeah, really. Ended up calling my cable provider and they were more than happy to help...for free. This was an upgrade from the Motorola unit the cable provider provides , but not so much of an upgrade after all. Still drops wifi constantly, even in the rooms next to the modem.

    Buy another modem

Same story as everybody else. Worked great for the first 2 months then started dropping wireless connections. The Internet goes out on all wireless connections but the computer that's connected to the same router with a network cable works fine and has Internet. First it was just 5second drops now wireless goes out for like 10-15 min every 3 hours ,and then everything is back to normal. It became very annoying I hope I can still go back and get it replaced for a different brand. I should have figured not to buy Motorola after I had constant problems withe the Motorola modems Comcast rented me.

A Comcast Service Tech recommended this item to me. However, it ended up not being so. I never did get to actually use it so I wouldn't be able to fairly rate this item. I can say it felt as though it were made well, not cheesy. Also Motorola is a reliable company.

Seems good, just not for Cox...

Well, bought this modem despite the mixed reviews. Got it home, was very easy to hook up, and seemed to work right away. Went from getting about 20 Mbps, to 50 Mbps right away with good signal strength and range. Then the disconnects started. Sometimes it would work... Sometimes not. Some web pages would work, others not.... After calling back my ISP (Cox Communications), they referred me over to Motorola. The Motorola guy said that there is a known compatibility issue with Cox internet service, and right now, all they are doing is to offer refunds to people who have bought them. Cox had no idea there was any issues. So, if you have an ISP that this is compatible with, seems like a great modem/router, but otherwise it's an expensive brick.

I bought this modem so I could fully use the options with my cable provider. The set up took me forever with Chartier. I was going to bring it back. The set up is not that easy and the CD is useless. I did get it up and running so we will see what happens.

Good modem to start with but developed problems

I have had this modem for slightly over 2 years now. It worked great for the first year and then began to drop the wifi connections when it got hot. I would have to reset it three or four times a week. It is to the point now that it will not keep a wifi connection for more than about 15 minutes. I plan to buy an seperate modem and router today and get away from the combination units.

I purchased this about a month ago. Was a bit weary since it had not received good reviews. Well it turns out, the modem sucks. I say this because it lost connection every time my computer woke up from sleep mode. My old Motorola modem never had this problem. It looks like it's a firmware issue and Cox said that they didn't have any updates. They said that any firmware updates get pushed over every night. So, good thing I kept my old one. I am returning it to BB today for a full refund. The only good thing is that the speed did increase, but that's about it.

I was tired of paying monthly leasing fees for an inferior product from my cable internet provider so I bought my own. Good-bye perpetual leasing fees. Paid for itself within 2 years and is still going strong. Great signal strength throughout the house.
