Works, slow reconnect on WiFi

In general modem works fine with reliable connection to internet through cable provider. My one complaint is that the WiFi connection time is several seconds while our previous wireless router was almost instantaneous. This is particularly annoying with our laptops where we may want to wake up laptop and quickly check something and then need to wait 3-4 seconds for connection to be established.

Have had for over a year, loses connection between computer and router.
Loses connection between router and cable but never at same time. Have to unplugg and restart at least once a week. Not a good buy for someone link me that is not a computer wiz.

This cable modem keeps dropping wireless wifi signal. And also the fact that it doesn't have an option for you to update firmware is very strange and go against the norm. You have to call Motorola and ask for help in updating the firmware, which is a hassle.
Additionally the GUI interface is primitive, like it was designed in the 90's, hard to read. The adnin password doesn't accept complex character.
I would not recommend this product, even if it's price drops down to 50 dollars.

We purchased this cable modem because we thought our older cable modem was having problems. From day one we found this Motorola SURFboard eXtreme to be MUCH slower than our older DOCSIS 2.0 modem. We also found that this is the only cable modem which you cannot set the DNS settings for; you have to use whatever the cable company sentences you to. Contacting Motorola was extremely disapointing - they were curt and rude and entirely unhelpful past "yes" and "no" answers. We are now looking for another brand of cable modem and would not recommend this modem to anyone.

I can barely get online to even write a review the wi-fi is so poor on this modem. I've tried to log in to the Motorola site to change some settings but I can't even get on the site with the correct username and password. Apple TV is a nightmare to use with this modem. Don't waste your time or money.

Whether it is the modem or the cable company is hard to say. East Alabama cable is not the best. I had it for 2 months. Three times it locked up for days. Called Motorola, and level 2 support with the cable. Everything looked good, signal strength, they saw the modem., computer talked to the modem. But not connection. The third day I had an appt for the cable guy, turned on the power and it worked. Less than a month later down for another 3 days. Support came out, all looked good but could not connected. Put on the techs modem, it connected Put on my new one, nothing ..Put on my old motorola sb5101, I connected. The speed seemed great but it was not a reliable connection....

(i have comcast) the main problem is the combo concept it work great as a modem only but the router part of it is top of line garbage. if there is any issue with this product that you will have its router related. the device needs to be taken off shelves and recalled. I asked the clerk at the returned counter about this item. she laughed and said this item has the highest return rate and that people always complain about the wifi connetion....FYI.. the setup was also hard to figure out and the wireless went out in the first hour... took it back and got the $99 surf board extreme cable modem and the $90 netgear n600 dual band router. unlike DSL, i guess cable modems are not yet ready to be built in to an all in one device, BUY SEPARATE

Don't buy it--go with another brand. Easy to install and worked great for the first couple of weeks. Gradually, signal strength decreased, and it started to disconnect more and more frequently. Even better is Motorola's customer service--pay to get a replacement with the same defective product and wait 5-7 days for them to ship you the replacement. Definitely return to Best Buy before the warranty period is up if it starts disconnecting--it will only get worse--and Best Buy treats customers much better than Motorola. After this experience, I won't even consider a Motorola product again.

Faster than the provider's modem.

My cable provider allowed a monthly rental of their modem. This made sense to us to purchase one. The wireless network was not as good, so we also purchased a wireless router with a faster protocal, linked as a bridge.

Least reliable and slowest connection

I use xfinity's hotspot when I need the fastest speed compared to this. I'm very dissappointed with both the connection and speed of this product. I lose connection all the time and have to unplug and reconnect. It's even slower than using the hotspot connection.

To have all in one and be docsis 3.0. It has wireless and wired connections on board. It's one of a very few that the local cable company supports. Another great job by Motorola.

Bought 2 weeks ago when Charter informed me my Linksys modem (Docsis 1) was no longer supported. The 6580 was on their supported list. Hooked up easily. That was the end of the good news. It dropped the signal every time I walked away from my computer. Voip phone would not work on long distance. Wifi radio stopped all the time. Packet loss ran 60-80% consistently. Would not reboot on its own. Charter tech, Motorola help, all said signals and specs were OK. To check I bought a cheap used Ambit (Ubee) modem, the one sold by Charter, and it works great. So I don't know if the problem is with me, the 6580, Charter, or an incompatibility between the two. I advise you don't use it with Charter. If you want to try one anyway watch Craigslist and you may see mine there as I threw the box and can't return it.

I was a little sticker shocked by the price. Set-up went easy enough through Comcast's online registration process, and seemed to work just fine right out of the box. Took my old rental modem back to Comcast, which I had been using for about 6 years, thinking all was good. Within a day or two, started having networking issues with the wireless devices in my house making connection to it. After 5 weeks, it suddenly stopped working all together. Would not "handshake" with Comcast anymore. Spent half day on the phone with Motorola, who kept blaming Comcast, and the half of the day on the phone with Comcast, who simply said they were getting nothing from the modem. Comcast sent out a tech the next day, which cost me another $60, and he honestly tried for over 3 hours with various levels of tech support to get the thing to work. He brought in a couple of used modems he had in his service van, they would connect and work fine. I finally had him install one of their new Arris modems, and within literally minutes everything, including the wireless network was up and running perfectly.
My experience with the Motorola was definitely not good, cannot recommend.

The modem is a plug and play, which I like. The instructions were very
poor. I had troubles getting the wep number for the wireless. After going to Motorola's web sit, the instructions were there. I did as it showed and now the wireless works great. I'm not sorry I purchased
this modem.

I purchased this router/modem on the recommendation of my internet provider. They are improving their service and since we have so many devices that are dependent on internet service, I followed their advice. Seems as if every day since we have had it someone in the house loses service on their device. I never had any problems with our old modem.

I have owned this device 2years, now. It worked great maybe the 1st first year. Mostly, I just need a tunnel out. But this last year, it has gotten worst, drop signal, at first i thought it was the ISP, then maybe its the nic on mac. But its the device, and since pass the 30 days of purchase; i'm stuck with an expensive P.O.S. device, until able to afford another. I now wish I did not recommend to my sister, because she has recently complained about the same poor connection, which she has owned less than 1 year.

Quality Issues - Why Best Buy? Why?

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
I purchased this "SURFboard" for a 1300 sq ft home. It dropped the internet regularly, but would always reconnect if prompted. Finally it died altogether 370 days after purchase; Motorola would only honor it up to 365 days. I had to have a repair technician from my ISP provider spend an hour at the house, isolating the issue, hooking my Motorola SGB6580 up to a diagnostic machine before it was declared dead; it cost $0.43 a working day for this product; NOT A GOOD VALUE. This does not include the cost of the cable tech coming to the house.
I love Best Buy. I purchased my LG TV, my refrigerator, my vacuum, DVD's, and my last router #from Linksys; it last 5 years#, and have always loved everything I bought. This was the exception. I hope Best Buy actually reads these reviews because 50% of the 169 people who purchased and reviewed this product would NOT recommend it. Why Best Buy, when you are known for quality and knowledge, would you keep stocking a product that alienates 50% of your consumers who buy it? This is not you!
It may be that there is a dirth of brands offering a quality option, but then why not make your own product? You are big enough, savvy enough, and I would trust a Best Buy product over a Motorola hands down. Please find us a better solution than this product; it was the best and most expensive in the store at the time. I know you can do better. - Loyal BB Customer
