    DO NOT BUY!

This router/modem has a built in firewall. If you configure it above the "low" setting it will block all but listed ports. If you configure port forwarding and triggering for your internal network those rules WILL NOT WORK. Despite configuring port triggering and forwarding the ports remained blocked. This is a known issue for the last year judging by internet posts. Motorola has yet to produce a fix. If you forward ports on your network this router is NOT the router/modem for you.

    WIFI does not work

Bought this thinking it would be nice to not have as many boxes on my desk. I plugged it in call the cable company and worked for my tablet kinda. My laptop has to be hard wired in for me to be able to browse the internet. I tried the computer at other wifi spots and had no problems. Called C.S. and was on the phone for over a hour while we tried just about everything to resolve the issue. It will not work. My tablets and phones constantly lose connection then regain it while i am on them. I ended up plugging my OLD router into this modem to get wifi back into the house. I would not buy this if you use your wifi.

Good modem until you need warranty.

Modem is a great value and works well for basic needs. I only needed basic coverage for smaller home and don't do a lot of gaming/data usage. Main usage come from computer and mobile devices and TV. Modem started dropping connections to devices then went out. The real problem is the customer service from Arris. The modem was 13 months old and within 2 year warranty. THESE ARE YOUR OPTIONS: you send them your modem and PAY shipping then they send you a new one. OR they will send you one first for 10 bucks then you still have to PAY to send yours in. I called today to check on the status of my replacement and was advised that the first one they sent out came back, there was an error. So they sent out a second one AT THE SLOWEST RATE fed ex offers (one week estimated delivery.) They did not care to speed the delivery of the second try due to their own error. Short of it: you will be without a modem (and still paying your internet service provider for Internet) for at least three weeks when utilizing your "warranty".

Avoid: Arris SBG6580 modem/wifi router combo

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

If all you want is the basics, then this is it! Issues: 1. Wifi signal is WEAK! 2. Dual band 2.4G/5G is NOT automatic as YOU must CHOOSE a setting! 3. Port forwarding is a B!tch when configuring for online activities 4. POOR documentation and instructions It's least expensive, now, because it's an OLD modem/router combo with a weak wifi signal. You'll need to buy a Wifi extender even for a small apartment size of ~650 square ft. You MUST call your cable company, like Comcast, and provide it with the device's information or you will NOT get any connections! Spend the money and get a better modem/wifi router combo esp. one that has the AUTOMATIC dual bands and enough power to broadcast a wifi signal in a small area. Better yet, buy a modem then connect a wifi router though it'll cost more and you'll have to deal with 2 devices but the speed and performance will be Better! Buy online [you know where!] where it's Cheaper with lots more choices!

The worst WiFi AP I have ever owned

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

My primary problem is this device could not reliably link to web sites on 802.11 2.4GHz band (b/g) no matter what I did and I am very well versed in WiFi. I spent 8 hours messing with this thing and in the end I returned it, got the Moto Cable Modem (no WiFi) and a seperate WiFi AP from Netgear and it was rockin 20 min later, no problems. This Moto AP/Modem product simply does not work, even Ethernet access to the Internet was spotty. When I was returning it the lady at the register told me she had the same one at home and hers was dropping connections and not accessign web pages as well. Do youself a huge favor, steer clear...

    Terrible with TWC

First day it worked well however after 2nd day, it started to being unstable for connection. Initially I bought this to replace my near 7 year old router, figure it would be great to have both. Great thing about best buy is that we can return in 30 days, fortunately. Time to look for another one, this time not being a space crunch freak and really look out for a router. This is based on Lomita area.

I'm experiencing a lot of the same issues that a number of other people who have purchased and rated this product. Wireless is very poor even when the other machine is within 40 feet. My machine is plugged directly into the unit - which sits 3 feet away - and I still get very poor performance. It has also "hung up" on me twice and it's only been installed for 2 weeks. So....I would strongly recommend that you consider a regular cable modem and router...not this conbined unit. I'm very disappointed.

I've had it just over a week and will be bringing it back tomorrow. Constantly losses connection. I have to reconnect to network every time I use my computer because of it constantly timing out. Unable to watch Netflix or use any other online service that requires a constant connection. I will be returning this item tomorrow. I should have read the reviews before purchasing this. I'm just glad I am still within my 30 days since purchasing.

Not good for extensive WIFI use

I was lured by the sale price in spite of numerous reviews regarding the poor WIFI performance. I have no hardwired devices in my home network, so WIFI performance is crucial. I could not get any device to work in any part of my 1600 sq. foot house. I had to return it and buy a separate router and modem. Shame on me for being hard-headed!

Piece of junk - Motorola refunded my money

After 3 month of use modem was constantly dropping the connection. Got another one, same thing. Comcast tried to push new firmware update but it was always rejected by this Motorola modem. So as of now useless on Comcast network. Called Motorola tech support, opened a case and 3 phone calls later Motorola agreed to a refund. Sent in receipt and got a check. IF YOU HAVE SIMILAR PROBLEM CALL MOTOROLA, they are aware of firmware problems.

    Paperweight - Buyer Beware

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Worst product I've ever bought from Best Buy Hands Down. My wireless router went out on me yesterday and I still had my D-Link modem of 4 years +. Went to Best Buy to replace my router and figured I'd get a newer modem as well while I was at it. Was told that a newer modem would increase the likely hood that I would get the speeds that I'm paying for through Comcast (i.e. I pay for 20MB speed and get on average about 5-7 with my current modem & router#. This modem came highly recommended by the Best Buy associate. Got home, installed it and the modem wouldn't stay on 3 minutes before it rebooted itself... over and over again. The paperwork in the box says "BEFORE RETURNING THIS PRODUCT TO THE STORE FOR ANY REASON, PLEASE CALL MOTOROLA BROADBAND TECH SUPPORT: 877-466-8646".... Now I see why! I called the number with no resolution. Plugged back in my trusty D-Link and back in business... Going to return the paperweight #i.e. Modem) tomorrow and tell the associate how bad a recommendation this product really was. Avoid the Hassle - Avoid Motorola

    Seattle on Comcast: FAIL

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I cannot disagree with those in markets and with cable providers where this may work great. However, I installed this device in North Seattle on Comcast and OUCH!! Even after promises from Comcast support (and firmware checks/updates) that things were just being "synchronized", this unit remained VERY unstable. The unit disconnected every three days, then daily,...then three times per day. GRRRR!! You should know early on if the unit is stable or not. If it is unstable RETURN the unit and replace WITHIN the 30-day return period and replace with 6121 OR 6141 as soon as possible. Save yourself some grief. DO NOT fight with the unit or your cable provider.

I waited until my second one bit the dust before I wrote this review. I've owned two within the past four months, if you are one of the lucky ones, good for you but if you are a potential buyer play the odds based on all the reviews and stay away! I was enticed by the bundled functionality and believe me I've given Motorola the benefit of the doubt, they have great customer service but the product is not ready for prime time. I have to reset it three times a day, the first one did last longer than the second. The second went into "reset me please" mode after about one week.

    Not a best buy

I bought this modem after using one at a friend's house that worked very well. Installation was very easy and I was up and on the internet very quickly. After a couple of days, the modem has started bogging down, instead of getting the 13 to 16 meg down that I was getting, I have gone as low as .2 meg down. After rebooting, it jumps back up to the faster speeds. Also, the wireless lan is awful. I am about 20 feet from the modem and my connection is only good, about 1.0 Mbps. For a modem/wireless router that is supposed to deliver true n band support, this is around 1/150th of the performance expected in n band. My Linksys E1000 delivered well over 100 mbps.

I've had device for two years. The first year it was dropping off A LOT. You have to unplug it to get it reconnected. There is also a foul oder that comes from it. I think it was too hot so I put a fan next to it. Drop off, drop off, drop off. Buy something else. Today it finally died. It's been dying for the last year.

My mother has a business adjacent to our home and we share the internet with both her business and the home. The netgear we had prior boasted 54mbps... worked great other than having to reset it time to time. Thought we would spring for this one, best of both worlds if you will, router and modem. Nay, I tell you! Nay! 5 feet....goes from excellent to low.

Lost Connection several times a day

Tech Support tells me to keep changing channels to find one that is not disconnecting. For 3-4 days I changed to 5-6 different channels and still disconnects. Called back and they saying I need to go thru all 11 channels till they can do anything else. I asked what is anything else, why we don't try it now. No answer, they don't know. Looks like at least 50% customer has this problem. Because of that I will never buy any Motorola product again. I am going to lose the money and throw it to the trash and get another one today
