This is the second time I have picked up this product (one in my house and another in my apartment) and recommend it to my friends eager to ditch the cable company monthly modem fee and gain more control over their home network. Setup is simple and the router can communicate with the majority of modern wireless devices. Documentation is well organized and even the infrequent firmware updates are foolproof.

I was looking for modem-router because I was moving to my new home and have to set-up Comcast as my new internet provider. After several searches I finally find this one. At this time my internet service is running fast and WiFi is running Ok. Very satisfied with the modem at that time.

I initially had some issues with the interface bogging down completely and making the performance from the modem side suffer. I also had an issue with the DHCP server refreshing the lease every 60 minutes, which eventually caused an outage of my network connection every hour on the hour from when I booted up the modem. I resolved this by statically assigning an IP to my machine. My wife, however, never had the issue and we run identical OSes versions and patches, so why it bugs my PC and not hers is beyond me. After I solved that and rebooted the modem, the performance has been great, speeds are at or higher than advertised (speed boost, etc) and I'm happy with the purchase. I considered going with the newer cable-modem only model + another brand router, but having the all-in-one solution actually working is nice. If it messes up again though, I will be going with the cable modem + different router solution ... probably an Apple Extreme.

I live in the sticks and broadband speeds are slow. My new service provider was able to give me a faster speed broadband service for internet but the old companies equipment would not work. I opted to buy my own and stop paying monthly rent. The provider suggested what was needed for my new broadband service. It was a no brainer for me. This one was readily available at my local Best Buy at a great price even over other internet sites and I didn't have to wait for it to arrive in the mail.

Super-Easy Router/Modum Combination

This is my 2nd Surfboard Router/Modum. It is fast, easy to connect to my system.. The only problem I had was that there are TWO passwords that the instructions refer to. One is YOUR Password. If you cannot remember it, try Motorola. The other is the Password on the case of the Modum/Router itself.
The combo less hassle, and very reliable. Costs about the same is buying each separately, and the previous one lasted for years.

After carefully checking with my cable company's list of compatible modems, this is what I chose. It has great reviews and I checked every one. When I got to the store the salesman told me it was a tank! All I had to do was connect it and plug it in. Then once I called the cable company, voila...instant high speed! Simple, easy and pretty basic which is perfect for me since I knew nothing about what I was doing.

As long as you are connected via Ethernet cable to the box its a fantastic modem. The wifi signal is very week and only works good in the room the router is in. I would suggest researching something different for those who want to use the wifi in your whole house or office. Personally I'm going to buy a wifi router and disable the wifi on this modem and hook the router to this modem. It's download and upload rates are really good.

This modem works great. Easy setup, lightning fast, no problems at all, but that's the 2nd try. First modem didn't work at all, and after calling my ISP and getting a technician out, we finally had to exchange it for another

Good for simple needs; stop paying rental fees!

I am happy with this device, but it continues to get mixed reviews, so I thought I would share my experiences. If your needs are simple, this device will probably meet them. A lot of the negative reviews seem to be from people who demand a lot from their networking equipment.
I have used the 6580 for a year now, so it has already paid for itself by saving me from Comcast's $10 gateway rental fee. Everyone should buy their own equipment for that reason alone. I wanted to minimize clutter, so having an all-in-one device was important to me as well. I only use the 6580 for getting wifi to my laptop, phone, and Apple TV (for HD streaming), and it reliably gives me the speeds that I'm provisioned for by Comcast. (In the last few months, I've had to reset the device more frequently, but not to the point that it's irritating yet. Also, this seems to have coincided with me officially registering the device with Comcast.) The range is adequate for the apartment I live in.
One thing I should note for those getting poor wireless speeds: when I first started using this modem/router, I was getting unsatisfactory performance out of it. I called the tech support line, and I found out that because I'm in an urban area, I was getting interference from other wifi networks on the same channel. We changed the channel to one not used by anyone else, and I immediately was getting peak performance. It was easy to do through the administrator settings.
So my bottom line is this: If you want to stop paying modem rental fees, minimize clutter, and have modest networking needs, this device should suit you just fine.

I didn't want to pay time warner monthly fees for a piece of equipment that i needed anyway. I'm using it as a cable modem and a wifi router. it's on time warner's list of acceptable modems for the speed [i chose the slowest speed at the lowest price]. getting it turned on by time warner was a little complicated - mostly because of the tech at the other end i think, and took about an hour. i've been using it for a couple of months now with no issues. the speed, wifi connection, etc. are all fine.

I am not tech savvy but after looking at blogs the tech people recommended this particular modem/router it was fairly easy to install and has worked great ever since...I also like that it combines two things in one...we have 3 iPads and at least two lap tops working at any give. Time without any drag!

This is a great product. Convenient to have a wireless modem and router in one. Very easy set-up. Why rent from cable companies when you can just purchase your own?! This product also was one of the top consumer rated. Have had no problems.

Probably one of the best cable modems out there. I have one at my house and have purchased them for all of my kids's homes. They are totally reliable and fast. I've never had a 'hiccup' as I did in the past with equipment provided by cable/internet companies. Save yourself the monthly 'rental'. This machine will pay for itself both in dollars and peace of mind.

The Motorola MODEM/Router was a pleasure to set up being so simple to began using and I am not an IT or Network individual.
Definitely a fast MODEM/Router allowing downloading for streaming movies, etc., without the customary wait as required by other slower MODEM/Router configurations.

i bought this cable/wireless modem/router to get out my old, out of date, slow speed Motorola modem and separate wireless router, which were bulletproof. we have three laptop computers on wi-fi and one desktop, wired direct to modem, not to mention three to six data downloading cell phones at any given time. so after setting up the modem and computers, which takes some configuring and time, it took me an hour or so for few days to get it right. so far it has been absolutely near rock solid! it has dropped connection a few times, (not sure if its modem or computer) but reconnects quickly. we watch streaming movies thru a laptop and now there is absolutely no stop/pause for the movie download to catch up with the playing of the movie. I am paying for a speed of 3.0 mbps... still works fantastic! tested the speed with a speed test app on my cell phone, previous speeds were .45 to 1.53 mbps, NOW its consistently near or over 3.0 mbps! i am very happy with this modem/wireless router!

Great Cable Company Replacement

Works just as good as the cable company's box. Please Note that This DOES work with Comcast Infinity, Comcast will tell you that you need their box for your services to work, but that is not the truth, you will however loose phone service, this unit does not have a phone jack, but I never used that function so it was no loss even though it was bundled. Now I save an additional $10 as of 2015 a month for a "rental" fee so it will pay for itself in a year!
