Ash vs evil dead

I have been waiting years for this, years!! Well, a lot of us have been waiting years for this. Luckily Universal Studios didn’t let Raimi use the original cut for Army of Darkness (originally titled Medieval Dead and with a different ending where Ash uses the Necronomicon to return home but ends up in a post-apocalyptic future). For years there were rumors of another Evil Dead film, or a reboot, but since television has gotten so good, I’m really glad that this was the medium they chose to tell more adventures of Ashley J. Williams.
I watched the pilot Halloween night on Starz as was intended, and it was everything I wanted it to be. Bruce Campbell was perfection as always, it was so amazing to see Bruce back in the role of Ash after all these years, it’s almost like no time has passed. After picking up a girl and taking her back to his trailer, they “party” and to impress her Ash reads a bit from the Necronomicon, not a good idea. Never read from the book! There are tons of awesome deadites in the pilot, lots of creepy and gross moments that harken back to Evil Dead 1 and 2. I love all the call backs to ED 1 and 2, music cues and flashbacks (though there is no mention of Army of Darkness at all, maybe in future episodes but that adventure was not mentioned in this first episode). I want to say more but I won’t spoil anything either. I loved that there was more Three Stooges style slap stick humor, this just felt right at home with the rest of the films.
Ash is a lone hero, but often times his stubbornness and arrogance gets in him in trouble. Luckily for Ash, he has some help. Ray Santiago plays Pablo, Ash’s coworker who looks up to Ash and sees the potential in him to be a true hero. Dana DeLorenzo plays Kelly, Pablo’s friend and also works with he and Ash, she doesn’t really see Ash in the same light that Pablo does. We are also introduced to Jill Marie jones as Amanda Fisher, a cop who runs into some deadites and has a very brief encounter with Lucy Lawless who plays Ruby. Sam Raimi gives us a lot to chew on in the pilot, but is also keeping a lot secret, and as the first season unfolds you really can't tell if Ash will be the hero he has been in the past. Who is Ruby and what are her real motivations, will Pablo and Kelly become an item? Will Ash ever get to see Jacksonville, FL? There ended up being only 2 references to Army of Darkness that I caught, but there were some great callbacks to things that happened in the past, especially ED 2. Some of the episodes in the middle of the season are a bit light on action and horror and focus more on character development. But boy does the last half of this season really kick s&%# into 12th gear with the gore and horror and action. I ended up loving all of the first season, the show retained the campiness and style of the original films while injecting some new blood and modern touches that I think really helped the show overall. The humor, the action, the horror, it’s all on point. This is everything I wanted it to be and more. I think any fan of Evil Dead 1 and 2 or Army of Darkness is really going to enjoy watching more adventures of Ash vs. Evil Dead. FULLY APPROVED.

Was a great show. Sucks that it was so short lived. For a few years, that's tradition, I would get these sets for my buddy for the holidays. Unfortunately that was a 3 year traditional only. Bring Ash vs. Evil Dead back!

Avid fan of the Evil Dead series, even the 2013 reboot, which may be the best of the past decade+ craze of remake/ reboots.
But, as much as I loved the 2013 reboot, there was a certain sadness that Ash and that original universe wasn't revisited.
Here to tell you, Ash vs Evil Dead, the TV Series, is not just a cash-in, it's a weekly return to that original, over the top universe.
Bruce Campbell returns as the titular Ash, now more aged, (yet still no more grown up,) and getting into the amount of shenanigans you'd imagine from the character, when, during a drunken hook-up, attempts to impress his date with a showing of the infamous Necronomicon, which sets events in motion that will once again force our puckish rogue to set aside (or not,) himself to save the world.
AvED is lovingly crafted to recapture everything that made ED2 & Army of Darkness such memorable films. Humor, blood & guts, special effects, even camera angles are all used in a way that does its job in making the series feel like its part of the original storyline.
The new characters fit right in, but its Ash, the Chin himself, Bruce Campbell, who slides right back into the role he made 30 years ago.
All the greatness aside, and while it keeps the "feel" of ED2 & AOD, one needs to understand that AOD is ignored as continuity here, but it's not missed; any questions you may have about events of AOD is quickly overshadowed by just how entertaining this series is.
Lucy Lawless, a Raimi favorite, plays main villain Ruby, and for a real treat, pick up season 2, when Lee Majors appears as Ash's estranged father and Ellen Sandweiss, who played Cheryl (Ash's sister,) in the original 1981 film, makes a return.
This is a wonderful return, and any fan of the original series that hasn't added this to their library already is missing out.

I remember seeing the Evil Dead movies in the
eighties and early nineties and as I waited for a new one I realized after each year went by they were probably done with the series. Now two decades later we get Ash vs Evil Dead and I must say it was worth the wait. I think this is the BEST show on TV. This is like Boston Legal meets Dexter, it's got it all action, comedy, horror
a lot of profanity a bit of drama and the best gore scenes not to mention the politically incorrect factor and a touch of nudity. This show is so fun it's unbelievable. To make a point I just finished watching season six of the Walking Dead and then the Flash season two
and I must say I thought Walking Dead was okay and the Flash was even better on it second season but this is the best! I still have to watch season four of Arrow which I'll bet is still not as good. As you can see I don't have cable TV of any kind so I just pick up the blu-ray's when they come out prior to the next season. I like this better because I can watch three to five episodes at a time.

I'm not a die hard Evil Dead fan, I'll admit that right out of the gate, however I'm a fan enough to know the important beats of what makes the movies (especially Evil Dead 2) entertaining. Ash vs Evil Dead doesn't try to rewrite the history or relationship with the movies (although it only finally referenced Army of Darkness in Season 2), but embraces the lore that has been told so far and does a great job of expanding upon it. If you enjoyed the movies, and are a fan of Bruce Campbell, then this is a must see. It's Ash exactly as you expect and Campbell just nails it still. The jokes always land and, I want to stress this, despite only about 4 hours of 'lore' existing previously, this series does a fantastic job of expanding upon that, which I greatly enjoy. Full disclosure, I'm not a huge fan of horror (give me Halloween, Evil Dead, Aliens... I'm good), so perhaps this show 'scared' me more than it would most people, but honestly the only time I jumped was a legitimate 'jump' scare so, whatever. I watch this for the comedy, and the gore is so over-the-top that it's not nauseating.
So why did I take a star off? Two reasons: one technical and one story. From a technical reason, I wish there were more extras and for some reason the audio commentary basically mutes the audio of the content. I understand you don't want the track of the show to compete with the commentary, but most releases are better at mixing this. As for the reason, there's a death late in the series which was upsetting. Again, it's a horror story, people die, but I felt it was unnecessary and disappointing and frankly I think I should be allowed to calculate that into my review score.

Ash Vs Evil Dead Season One is a rare treat. Bruce Campbell dyes his hair black, dons the chainsaw weilding stump, shotgun, and witty humor to return as Ash after a 23 year hiatus and the ending of Army of Darkness. So glad that Sam Raimi has brought this excellent show to Starz weekly. Ash returns with a few co-workers to hunt, fight, and destroy any and all deadites. He travels with his trailer and looks to find the answers to stop these creatures who have plagued him for over 35 years now. There is plenty of blood squirting, shotgun shooting, witty comical humor, and of course great editing, music, and special effects/makeup. Great performances by Bruce Campbell, Dana De Lorenzo, Ray Santiago, Jill Marie Jones, and Lucy Lawless. This show isn't for kids or children under 13 as the profanity is strong. However if you want to laugh in between the terror, horror, and thrills..this is definately worth checking out!! Ash is STILL GROOVY!!

Ash vs. Evil Dead is the official sequel to Evil Dead 2 (because of Universal Pictures, Army of Darkness isn't spoken of), where Ash Williams must comes to terms with the past and face off against the Evil once again, which now threatens the entire world. Ash gains two new sidekicks (Pablo and Kelly), and they set out to rid the world of the Evil, before history repeats itself in spades.
This series is for fans of the film series, including the reboot/sequel Evil Dead, so, if you're not acquainted or unfamiliar with it, know what you're getting into. It's gory, over-the-top, creepy, grotesque and impossibly violent in every glorious way imaginable. It does so without going the direction of the Saw sequels, having disgusting gore for gore's sake. This is a solid good time, with laughs and scares littered throughout.

Who wouldn't be excited about Bruce Campbell returning for another Evil Dead story? Personally my favorite from of the movies was Army of Darkness, as I enjoyed the humorous side of it although it went heavy on the humor and light on the horror. This series is perfect in its balance between horror and humor. It is easily as entertaining as any of the movies, and blends in humor well without being overly goofy or ruining the horror vibes. Bruce reprises his role as an aging hero (or perhaps anti-hero) and is joined by some talented new co-stars. Lucy Lawless also makes a showing in the series and does a fantastic job. If you enjoyed Evil Dead or Army of Darkness, or even if you like humorous horror like Shaun of the Dead or Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, there is a good chance you'll really enjoy this show.

Fans of director Sam Raimi's Evil Dead trilogy have been clamoring for a fourth movie for more than a decade. But at long last it is here, in the form of the Starz series, Ash vs. Evil Dead. Five full hours of chainsaws, boomsticks and lots and lots of blood. The TV format works surprisingly well for this story, as it gives fans more than they ever would have gotten from one movie. And since it's on Starz, network censorships are non existent. This is the same Evil Dead you remember and love, with eerie moving camera shots, laughing white eyed deadites and Bruce Campbell's sleazy charisma as he cracks a one-liner while severing a demon head with his chainsaw hand. If you are a fan of this franchise, getting season one is a no brainer (pun absolutely intended).

Ash is back to battle the deadites and other evil beings he once released from the Necronomicon. That darn book!
I don't want to spoil any details from the actual show for anyone who hasn't seen it, but I can spoil that you can enjoy this story as a fan of the original movies.
Bruce Campbell's humor is here to stay and the gore is ready to be unleashed.
There are some supplemental DVD features like commentary on all episodes. Sam Raimi is on the first episode. You have to select individual episodes to play the commentary tracks, and I had to figure that out for myself.
Please enjoy Ash returning to fight the only fight he knows.

Huge Evil Dead fan. Been waiting for a 4th movie for years. Then found out there was going to be a series (on premium cable though). Was worried how that might work, if it would be any good. My friend had watched season 1 and said I would not be disappointed if I bought it when it came to BD. So I bought it site unseen. Friend was right. I am NOT disappointed! This show takes right off and refers to almost every little detail from the movies. I love getting the references. This is the sequel I've been waiting for. Now I can't wait for season 2 to come to BD...site unseen. I will buy them for as long as they keep making seasons!

As a fan of the original EVIL DEAD films as well as the 2013 reboot, I just had to check out STARZ!'s First Season of the gory, funny ASH VS. EVIL DEAD! After watching all 10 episodes on STARZ! I was (just a tad) let down that it was more focused on the comedy more than the horror (imo..) but after catching a killer price at Best Buy, I decided to give it another watch since Season 2 was rapidly approaching just in time for Halloween..Well, it won me over the second time around. I think the 1080p HD Blu-Ray helped alot as you notice way more blood-spatter and the make-up effects really jump out at you on Blu...No spoilers but this is a must-have for any EVIL DEAD or Bruce Campbell fan. There's alot of tongue-in-cheek jokes and outrageous happenings..but hey, that was EVIL DEAD! Recommended!

Quite *groovy* to hear of this coming out! I've heard of people paying to get STARZ channel just to watch this show and claim it's worth every penny! Bruce, Robert and Sam (who co-writes and directs the pilot episode) are back and in charge with the television series furthering the Evil Dead chronicles. They had long been in thoughts with an Evil Dead 4 movie with several script starts to prove it. Had thought about a sequel to the re-working movie. But then this came along and now we get basically 5 more hours of Evil Dead chainsaw action! Bruce Campbell is of course very funny! It's been 30 yrs since the last time we saw Ash. His Ash character, however, seems a little more Bruce than Ash...but hey why not?
Because it's on STARZ they can pretty much do what they want...and that seems to be the one major weakness. "Hey lets do all this cussing and violence and blood...and then craft a show around it" seems like some executives probably said. Kind of weakens a bit of the story-telling.

When I first heard they were making a TV show based off the cult classic Evil Dead movies, I couldn't help but roll my eyes. I was still a little sore about the recent remake, and thought for sure they'd spin the series in a different direction from it's origin. Well, I gave the first episode a shot when it aired last year, and was BLOWN AWAY! It retains all of the charm, hyper violence, and cheesy one-liners you could want. They really did a fantastic job all around, and Bruce Campbell hasn't missed a step. Ash is back baby! It's a great show for lovers of the originals, and new comers alike. Bring on season 2!

I wasn't sure where to place my expectations of this show going in, as a fan of the films that preceded it. It's unclear where this takes place in the already loose canon, and whether or not Army of Darkness occurred? But the tone is right, and the show is a lot of fun. The soundtrack is excellent, with a lot of licensed and appropriate classic rock. The special effects range between some great practical work and some cheesy (maybe a bit TOO cheesy) computer generated effects. Maybe more budget could be put toward the CG parts. The season ends with a decent hook for another, and the special features are decent. There's a commentary track for every episode, but it's surprising that there's no gag reel.
I think the show works well enough for people who may not be familiar with the movies and the character of Ash, but there's definitely a lot more on offer for those who are already familiar and fans of the Evil Dead.
