So I'm looking online for deal on gaming laptops, not high end just enough to play some games I have on the go. I stumble upon this Laptop GL502VT-BSI7N27 at a decent price and decided to go for it. It arrived at the date that was stated so we were off to a good start. I booted it up and decided to give it a try. It needed some updates but nothing I thought I couldnt handle. I updated all the drivers, ran a virus scan to make sure everything was good but the darn thing kept on freezing. I tried doing the update and it would keep on getting stuck. I've tried everything. Ended up returning it.

I had to return this 3 times. All different things wrong. No power 2 times, and the blue screen of death the 3rd. I finally traded it in for a different gaming Asus.

Great Laptop. Screen isn't the best, however at this price point, you will not get top of the line display quality. Should have had 16GB ram as 8GB is soldered on leaving 1 slot for expansion (populated with 4GB module). 970M plays everything I throw at it at high and ultra settings. Mouse is "ok", I've seen worse. i7 processor is very quick, coming from an i5 sandy bridge, i can see noticeable speed improvements. The 5400 rpm hard drive is terrible and should have had a ssd period. I installed a ssd hard drive and brought this baby to life. Overall, I am satisfied with the quality of this laptop, but I would advise to purchase a ssd to fully unlock this laptops potential.

A gaming laptop without a CD tray? Hey ASUS, some games are CD based. Try adding that to your "gaming" laptops in the future.

Awesome Gaming Laptop; with snags

Initial Review;
This is an amazing laptop for the price. The 970m with the i7 are an amazing combination that do NOT disappoint for FPS on almost all major titles.
Everything on the laptop makes sense, is where it should be, and is generally ergonomically well thought out.
The cooling seems to do just fine, although it does seem to throttle right around 85C, but if you've ever had a gaming laptop, you know that heat is something that can't be helped.
Cons/Tweaks:
If you are looking at this laptop, and comparing it to other 14-15" Nvidia 970M gaming laptops, I must say that to get the best out of it, it takes some slight tweaking.
Replacing the hard drive with an SSD is a must. When you do this, reinstalling windows is a breeze, fast, and gets rid of all of ASUS' bloatware. Its a win-win.
There are a couple other things that are "sub-par" like the trackpad, and its not quite razer-blade thin. However, for the price, i'm not sure it can be beat.
I'll leave a secondary/long term review once i've had it for a few months.

Great mid-high end 15 inch gaming laptop

I spent weeks trying to find the perfect laptop with a real 4 core hyper threaded i7 and a GTX 970M before seeing this one pop up as “New” on Bestbuy just a few days ago. And since it was the cheapest one that also fell into the 15 inch laptop category I settled on giving it a shot and picked one up in store. The salesman told me stock is really limited as they did just start getting these in stores so if you’re interested definitely give a store a call as I find the whole if it’s in stock at a store thing hit or miss a lot.
This laptop has a lot of positives for me so I’ll start with the negatives so it’s not all positives until right at the very end. First up is the keyboard. It’s just bland to type on to me with very little feedback. It’s really hard to explain on the internet you just have to go out and use different laptops. It’s the springs or something in the laptop that just makes it feel bland to me. Not a huge deal breaker and it is a personal preference so you may like it. 2nd is the hard drive. The specs say it’s a 5400rpm unit and boy does it feel it. Slow is an understatement especially if you’re like me and had an SSD powered laptop or desktop. This is something I’ll address later when I’m not traveling and either replace or add an SSD depending on the chassis. 3rdly is the 12gb of RAM. When windows eats up a good 4gb on average leaving you with 8gb it just worries me. I haven’t had issues with it yet but I do plan on upgrading that as well just food for thought. 4th is the battery. It’s a gaming laptop so of course it’s not going to last as long as say a Macbook or something BUT with that being said it’s not easily replaceable like in most laptops which is why I’m listing it as a negative. I’m sure it can be replaced if/when it goes bad but it doesn’t just pop out like most laptops and at least from the looks of it requires the bottom cover off, and then unscrew about 6 screws and unplug it from the mainboard. And of course lastly since some people can’t ready descriptions NO it DOES NOT have a CD Drive. Not a huge deal for me as almost all my games are downloaded.
NOW onto the good stuff. Performance outside of loading (because slow hard drive) is fan freaking tastic. It’s a true quad core hyper threaded CPU and a 970M. It’s not like my SLI 980 Ti rig at home but it’s not supposed to be but high/very high settings at 1080p is fine for me on the road. As for the display itself well it works. I’m not a display-a-holic nor someone that needs accurate colors or what have you that you need different display tech for. It gets bright enough to almost hurt while looking at a blank white screen and it’s 60hz refresh idk what else some people want. Bloatware is still there but it’s not too crazy imho. Took me maybe all of 5 minutes to get rid of everything not ASUS related as I’ll get rid of them depending if they annoy me or not which so far hasn’t been the case. The keyboard even though it’s bland for me to type on it looks nice I like the back lightning on it. And it has a number pad a nice touch even though imho it made things a bit cramped but not a huge deal breaker for me either way. The chassis itself feels nice. The back of the display is this really slick aluminum but then sadly everything else is basically plastic but hey this thing doesn’t have a bitten apple on the back so I wasn’t expecting everything aluminum.
As for its gaming chops well I have yet to find a game that I have to dial things down past high. The new Doom, The Division, Fallout 4 and Metal Gear V all play at high at full 1080p or even with a couple settings on Ultra. Can play 4K video from Youtube onto my 4K monitor just fine so there’s that but as for 4K gaming well yeah right not on a laptop. My big desktop with more power GPU’s can barely do that so that’s wishful thinking for another time. I replaced the stock 5400rpm SATA Drive with a Samsung 850 Evo and things are much better now. There’s still that m.2 slot that I’ll eventually use up but my local Frys had a deal on that 2.5 inch drive I couldn’t miss out. Swapping it was fairly easy just requiring basic tools and of course the knowhow how to transfer the data from the source drive over or if you’re feeling brave doing a fresh Windows install. All in all very impressed and happy with my purchase.

This is a very nice Notebook. If you're like me and looking for a fast, new gaming laptop at an affordable price, this is going to work for you. You can already read the specs so I'll just tell you what I think.
Fit and Finish: Coming from a retina Macbook Pro, this comes nowhere near close. Apple just makes thinner, prettier products. That said; this is pretty decent for the price. The Aluminum pieces are nice and cool to the touch.
Speed: It's fast! It may not be an 8gb 980m but it blows Xbox One and PS4 out of the water for sure. The first major game I bought to play on here was Shadow of Mordor GOTY Edition and I can just about max that out at 1080p and still get 60fps. Pretty.
Display: I hear that other retailers have the model with IPS display; the one here at Best Buy doesn't. Mine has the TN panel, so it looks okay but blacks are washed out and the viewing angles (especially vertical) are atrocious. I purchased the Samsung IPS Panel from a third party and will be replacing it in a few days. The cheaper price at Best Buy combined with my rewards balance made it worth the hassle for me but if you want a nice screen, either look at a different retailer for the IPS version or be prepared to change it out like me.
What's in the box: Just the notebook and charger. Nothing extra.
Overall Impression: I'm happy with my purchase. I wanted an inexpensive, lightweight (relatively), and fast portable notebook, and that's just what I got.
If you want something thinner or more stylish, spend double and get the new Razer Blade. I would if I wasn't on a budget ;)

I LOVE THIS LAPTOP....it just burns through all of my games like they're leaves being burned by a flamethrower, and is very fast on startup....though not when you shut down. It is kind of slow when it starts up from a shutdown but i don't really care because it's faster than my old laptop soo :| .... It gets kind of hot on really demanding games like GTA V but its fine because the side where the WASD keys are placed are cool when it gets hot which is a pretty neat feature when you are gaming, light games run at normal temperature and light tasks are just pebbles for this laptop. I don't know why people complain about their battery life, it's fine for mine. I get 6 hours and 45 minutes when its at 97% on light tasks like surfing the web. I haven't tried gaming on battery because whoever does that is really stupid .-. ......................... All in all, this laptop is great at this price and i would recommend this laptop to all of the people i know.
Yours Dankest,

I am going to try provide some important information that I wish had been readily available to me without conflicting information.
First, this laptop DOES have an M.2 slot that operates in PCIE 4x. I personally purchased and installed a Samsung 950 Pro, and it works beautifully after migrating the hard drive using the Samsung Migration software, but I had to remove the original HD to get it to boot. Once I format the original HD, I will reinstall it (though the battery savings using the 950 Pro may make me change my mind.)
Second, Everyone is ABSOLUTELY correct. the standard hard drive for this is atrocious. It is incredibly slow, beware of purchasing this laptop if you do not intend to purchase an SSD or at least a much faster HDD.
Third, this laptop CAN support up to at least 24GB of DDR4 ram, and *maybe* 40GB if/when a 32GB DDR4 single stick becomes available. There is only 1 SODIMM slot for expanding memory. I personally installed a 16GB DDR4 module, which when added to the 8 onboard gave me 24GB, which IS recognized by the motherboard, so it is not limited to 16gb as the specifications suggest. Whether it would accommodate a 32GB module, I do not know, but it seems likely.
Finally, the monitor is only OK. it does get a bit washed out, and doesn't have the greatest viewing angles.
Overall, a pretty good laptop that can be a really good laptop for the price if you add an SSD or M.2 drive.

Let me start by saying this is my first dedicated computer/laptop specifically for gaming. Although I'm in college I wanted to a computer that would not only allow me to use Word, PowerPoint, etc., but also game. The games this computer can play on the graphics settings that they play on is pretty incredible. I play Rome Total War II on Ultra, Battlefield 1 on high, and Wolfenstein The New Order on Ultra. All of which are running around 50-60 fps. So, in conclusion, if you want a cheaper way to enjoy the latest games then here's your answer. Especially if you're a student.

I will have to say I really like Asus! I just upgraded to this laptop from a Asus G71 that was 9 years old and still works like new!! I felt it was time to uprade. I found this GL502VT as an open box and got it for 700 dollars. Out of the box it works great but I wanted to improve some things. So The first was the terrible screen with horrible viewing angle. I swapped out the screen. Laptopscreen.com for 79 bucks. Now the screen is beautiful Wow what a difference. Next I installed a 16gb ddr4 2133mb memory stick now shows 24mb memory available in windows. Last 500mb m.2 western digital ssd stick and I cloned the original hdrive to the m.2 ssd. NOW THIS THING ROCKS!!!!! I LOVE IT.

I've heard quite a few people complain about this laptop but I got it regardless. I'll admit out of the box it's a little slow for what you'd expect. Throw an SSD in and it's a completely different beast. I've got a Samsung 500 GB SSD alongside the 1tb HDD that came with it and there hasn't been any problem with speed what so ever. It stays cool under normal computing conditions and the battery lasts quite a while. Speakers sound great and the mouse and keyboard are extremely responsive. Playing a demanding game it gets hot but the fans are pretty quiet and efficient. I wish it had a couple more USB ports but I can't complain. I'm extremely satisfied with it, although I'm quite picky. I don't think I'd be as satisfied if I didn't have the SSD but with it, it's a beast for the price. Very portable, great if you want a powerful laptop for everyday use as well as gaming. Highly recommend. (Just wait for it to go on sale)

Pros:
- 1TB 7200 rpm drive
- Backlit keys
- fast dual bandwidth wifi
- lighter than some gaming laptops
- Space for NVM express & 2.5" SSD drives
- 970M video card
- USB - C port
Cons:
- 12GB only but 4GB SO-DIMM was easily replaced with 16GB SO-DIMM
- Heavy and expensive power brick if replaced
- so-so screen
- 4cell battery is not easily replaced
Overall its better than quite a few laptops sold at BBUY which only have 960 video card. Upgraded memory to 24GB and drive to 1TB Samsung Pro and this laptop flies.

Great Laptop, just needs an SSD

The laptop overall is a good product. Screen is a bit flimsy but it lowers the weight of the product overall and is sufficient. The RAM and Graphics Card are both solid products in this Mid tier Gaming Laptop. The only thing this computer desperately needs is an SSD upgrade. This is, thankfully, quite simple and with the recent drops in SSD prices, it is also very cheap. I defiantly would recommend this laptop if you feel comfortable replacing a hard drive (It is really easy, I recommend a Samsung SSD to take advantage of their Magician and Data Migration Software it is fantastic!).

Plan to upgrade

Wow, my life is changed after this experience. I knew that SSDs made a difference. But I didn't realize how much. I'll never go with a mechanical hard drive again!
My old laptop has seen better days, so I upgraded to this one. I saw 4.4 stars for average in reviews, and I liked the processor, RAM, and graphics card. I don't do a ton of gaming, but for when I do, I want something capable.
So I bought this one. And I got it home. And I was sorely disappointed. Sure, some things worked well, but it just seemed so slow.
And then I read reviews here. And I saw the problem. The hard drive is not up to snuff. So I started doing some reading on how to upgrade by cloning the hard drive onto an SSD. It sounded easier than I thought it would be.
So I set out to do it. It took some work to get the main partition on the existing hard drive shrunk enough, but after a defrag, it worked out.
Picked up a Samsung EVO 950 500GB SSD and installed in this morning.
It's a whole different computer now!!!! This thing is fast. The speakers are decent. The keyboard is not the best I've ever typed on, but it holds its own. The trackpad is very responsive. The graphics card is wonderful. The price, even after picking up the SSD, is reasonable. And it's blazing fast now!
My review on the basis of the machine I'm currently on would be 5 stars and then some. But I had to put 4 stars on it, because it's not that way out of the box. Still, plan for the upgrade, and this is still a better value for what you get than most similar laptops out there. Well worth a shot.

I purchased this laptop a couple months ago after having to return a fairly new computer (different brand) that completely failed. Perhaps if I didn't have that one first, my rating would be higher for this one, even though the other model I had was less expensive than the Asus. Right out of the box I noticed some minor things not working (such as the light to indicate caps lock). However, after having visited Geek Squad so much dealing with my previous computer, these minor issues weren't worth all the inconvenience. I also dislike having to hit the function and number lock buttons each time I turn on the computer to use the numerical pad, which I use daily. The speed is ok, but I do miss having an internal CD/DVD drive. Another thing I am really disappointed about is the display. It is not near as bright as my previous laptop. I specifically purchased this one with a matte screen so it could be easily seen outdoors, but it just isn't bright enough. Also, the volume leaves much to be desired. I will have to hook to an external sound source to provide adequate volume. Even with it in my lap, I sometimes have difficulty hearing all that is being said on a video.
The laptop is nice looking, and I like having a lighted keyboard. It isn't overly heavy due to the lack of a CD/DVD drive. Beyond that, I don't really have any impressive review to give. I guess time will tell as I add more apps and programs to the computer.
