This laptop is exactly what I think when someone says gaming laptop. It is fast and uses a lot of power. The battery life is actually pretty good if you change it to power saving mode.

I was not primarily looking for a gaming laptop but seeking performance so could do various software development with virtualization. This met all my requirements for the right price.

Got this laptop basically for school work and gaming. Keyboard fits well for both typing and gaming. However headphone is required because the sound system isn't fantastic compare with old N550 with Bang Ofusen. Overall it is a legit laptop with all Mid-high level of hardwares.

Fist of all let me tell you that I don't usually buy the latest technology available, most of the time you will be paying the novelty price.
This Laptop has the previous generation of GPU, and yes the new Nvidia Gen blows out of the water the 9xx, please remember that the 970m that this laptop has with the i7 CPU will destroy any current gen console and you will play all you modern games of a Mid-Hi graphics settings at respetable 40-60 FPS.
Asus dont let you down on product quality, the only change that I did to my Laptop is a 250 GB SSD that it does pair much better with the performance that the rest of the hardware can provide.

This laptop is good and you need to change the drive to SSD to unleash the beast of this laptop. It has good graphic, ram and cpu but the drive come with it - its decent drive.

Great for gaming but you need a fan or some space between the bottom of the laptop and table or whereever you place it if you plan to use it for longer than 2 hours.

This is my third gaming laptop, the first being an old Sager machine, the second being an asus as well. They were tanks. I had to buy a special bag to hold them if I wanted to travel, and it was almost as much trouble as bringing a desktop. This machine's biggest advantage is the fact that is is (relatively) light weight and slim. It can fit into most bags with no problem, and the battery will last more than 30 minutes. It isn't the best performer, and it runs VERY hot under load, but if you travel a lot or move your laptop from room to room, and you want a "gaming" machine, think about this one.

I bought this for my sons graduation present. Its for college, but I also know he will want to game on it as well. The performance, and graphics are great. Its also small enough for him to carry around. Most laptops with the same spec's are huge in size, and not very practical.
My son loves it. The only drawback is no cat 5/6/7 connection, or CDROM drive. We worked around this with USB adapters.

I bought this for my brother since he need a good computer when he starts Engineering classes at college while also doing some decent amounts of gaming. The laptop handles well, HDD is holding the GPU and CPU back so upgrade that to an SSD as soon as you can. Upgradability is easy and plentiful with only a few screews and a card to separate the bottom and the body. Supports m.2 PCIe cards btw, and warranty isn't voided when opened but you have to return the original parts back if you need to have the thing serviced by Asus.
Handles CodeBlocks, Visual Studio, Auto CAD, Photoshop, and Sony Premier nicely. Can do some 4K rendering but don't expect much. The GTX 970M is a good card, handles moderately demanding games easily in FHD. Triple A games will need to bumped down to medium setting to medium-high to break the 60+fps mark, but games like Overwatch can be played on High and still break 60+fps.
Heat is well around the average for thin and light gaming laptops of this size.
Battery life is decent, lasts around 1-2 hours of gaming, but regular use lasts around 3-4 hours. Sometimes reaches 5. Mileage depends on how you use it.
Typing experience is great, but the orange colored ASWD keys might turn you off.
Speakers are muffled and and can be easily muffled even more with you wrist while gaming.
Screen looks a bit washed out, and has some light bleed.
Touch pad uses native windows drivers so it is good, but it feels cheap since it's made out of plastic.
Build quality is great. For something this thing I was expecting a bit more flex, but there want a lot. Top is aluminum, rest is plastic.
The design is a hit or miss for people, it has orange accents. The orange accents on the lid light up too. Even the fan grill is orange and the rubber feet.
No CD drive on it, so if you need one either buy an external one look at a different laptop.
Overall, it is a great mid range gaming machine. The orange gamer inspired design might turn off a lot of people, but to those who are t turned off by that, just do light-moderate gaming or need a good computer to do some Engineering work that is tight on a budget, this laptop is an option to consider.

Excellent laptop for video editing and upgradable

I own a PC repair shop and I do video editing and light gaming. This laptop is the perfect purchase for both purposes. Contrary to what several other reviews stated, my laptop DID come with a 7200 RPM hard drive instead of a slower 5400 RPM model. The computer has an M.2 PCIe SSD slot, so users that want a massively faster all-around experience without sacrificing the storage of the 1TB hard drive can look forward to purchasing and adding an SSD to the computer. 12GB of RAM is plenty of room for Adobe After Effects and Premiere to do their rendering work with memory to spare, but there is one memory stick that can be replaced inside. The cooling system is excellent and is hard to accidentally cover up, a common issue with some laptops that pull air through the bottom. The CPU is as fast as some higher-end desktop CPUs and benchmarks around 80% the speed of my massively hot AMD FX-9590 desktop. The computer lacks an optical drive bay which is unfortunate since I store archive data on BD-R discs, but I found an external USB 3.0 enclosure to install my BD-R drive into and it works fine. The matte non-touch IPS screen is a very welcome change from the IPS glossy touchscreen garbage I came from; touchscreens are a pain in several respects and the glare from a glossy screen makes them unusable in bright conditions, so this laptop wins several points for the matte screen without touch.
One aspect I do not like is the position of the speakers. I usually use this laptop connected to an ultrawide 2560x1080 monitor for video work and the laptop remains closed. I have to jam a piece of cloth in between the lid and palmrest for the sound to not be terrible.
Another major nuisance is that the location for the End key is the power button. This is a common flaw with Asus gaming laptops. I use an external keyboard most of the time, but I really wanted an End key, especially since I do programming work and that key is super useful. Compounding the issue, the number pad's cursor control functions including the End key don't work when you press the Fn key; you HAVE to disable number lock to use them and that takes away the usefulness of having the number pad. There is a completely useless ROG key where number lock usually is. There is no good workaround for these poor keyboard choices. Be aware of this before buying the computer.
Overall, it's a great computer. I can live with the flaws and I don't regret the purchase one bit.

I bought this computer for the games that I play. I was able to Download 2 games so far with HD. Its running them with NO problems or lag at all. On the flip side, it runs very slow at start ups and surfing the net. I will need to go get a ssd card installed. But, don't let that stop you from getting this computer, it runs great at games. It will only cost 250.00 getting an 500 GB ssd card installed no biggie.

I purchased the computer primarily for work. The extensive memory (12Gb) really is a positive. It helps me when working on video files for my business. The graphics card is amazing.
As a negative, though, I have to say that the current hard drive is rather slow (5200 rpm) which shoes in the computer booting up. I definitely plan to upgrade the hard drive to an SSD drive.
For gamers: This computer is being used for occasional gaming. I have not had any issues in running WOW at the highest graphics settings.

I purchased this machine primarily for editing videos. It has enough RAM and a dedicated video card which makes editing with PowerDirector way faster than my 2 year old Dell with an i5 and 8GB of RAM.
Like others have said, the hard drive on this one is sluggish. I added a Samsung 960 EVO SSD and it has made a world of difference on boot times as well as program load times. I have the pre-installed HD as a storage medium only.
Overall I am very satisfied with this machine.
