I have always loved Asus routers but for being a gaming router it was restrictive for options. The os was clunky. I had to reset to factory settings twice in order for the firmware to take. Just a mess

I was looking for a gaming router to improve the gaming experience for my sons. One plays PS4 and the other is a PC gamer. The associate in the store recommended this router and said it increased his speed by 3x. We found that the Asus - ROG Rapture AC5300 Tri-Band Wi-Fi Router was slower than the old router I bought at Radio Shack back when they were still in business. We switched back to the old router and our speed is back to where it used to be. The reason this was marked down by $100 was probably so they could unload them. Definitely not satisfied with my Best Buy purchase, but returns are so difficult.

Went to upgrade from the Asus RT-AC3100 and it is totally worth it. When buying it I didnt even consider it on sale so it was soooo worth it. Speed is amazing and am using it with https://www.asus.com/us/Networking/PCE-AC88/ and have 2Gbps speed constantly. Very good for laocal network. on TWC aka Spectrum have internet speeds of 350 mbps download.

I bought the Netgear R9000 before I knew about this Asus router. I owned the 66U, 68U and AC3100 which have all been rock solid with zero issues. When I saw this 1.8 Ghz quad core CPU with 1 gig of ram beast was at my local Best Buy, I exchanged the R9000 for it. That was a huge mistake. I set the router up with a new login and password, setup the three SSID's and off I went! My PC have the PCE-AC88 and I saw the full 2.1Mbps on the 5Ghz band that the adapter advertises and the 1Gpbs the 2.4 Ghz band advertises. But to my disappointment that is where the fun ended. This router constantly lost all connectivity sporadically every few minutes, the longest I ever stay connected was 58 minutes, yes I began timing it. I contacted Asus and that was another mistake. Their support is notoriously horrible and I got to experience that. I let them know in the first e-mail what was going on and they told me to factory reset the router, which had been done and proved to not work (but I did it again anyway just to be sure). After I replied to them saying it did not help they told me to cripple my network by making the connection the wireless N standard only! Nope sorry Asus, I have the AC3100 and its perfectly fine without using ONLY the wireless N standard. After I e-mailed them stating I would not change my setup, they thanked me for being part of the Asus family and closed the ticket. Thank Asus. Obviously this is a router problem as my Asus AC3100 is perfectly fine with the EXACT same settings and the Netgear R9000 was also perfectly fine running the same settings. DO NOT buy this router, but a different brand like the Synology RT2600 for much less. Stay away from Asus and stay away from this router.

In Short: Dont Get it!!!

I had waited for this router since its initial review at CES 2017 and on the first day of the initial release on Best Buy, I eagerly bought it. This GT-AC5300 was the perfect router for my needs: it had 8 ports, Link Aggregate Controller Protocol, Intrusion Protection and Detection services (plus Quad-Core Specs), VPN Client and sweet wireless controller.
But everything went down after the purchase…..
Please note: I know that any new release will have some bugs or beta issues, but not this level of frustration.
Upon receiving the router, I configured it and replace all my other gear with this awesome router, but it keep on rebooting for no known reason. So, I performed a firmware upgrade on the router, but instantly had more stability issues with the router. It got so bad that after two days, I contacted ASUS support with my configs and system logs, only for them to instantly reply back to me to RMA the device.
I was frustrated with the response and that they released an unstable firmware and product that they instantly wanted me to RMA. This RMA would mean I would have to wait for them to “repair”, which could be up to three weeks and I would have to pay for shipping…. I JUST BOUGHT IT.
I replied back to Asus support, that they should review my config and system logs because I wanted to help them and would be willing to wait for them to release new firmware. I just wanted for my ticket to be escalated to a TIER 2 or 3. They replied they would send my information to the engineers. But after that email, I waited a whole week to hear from Asus and received nothing… So I emailed them asking for any update and they replied no new news.
The breaking point was when I setup the vpn client to connect to a VPN server (one of the reason for purchase this router). This caused the router to freak out (even more) and caused my network to come to a crawl, so I deleted the configs. But some how my configs were still saved and it was trying to log into my vpn provider and failing to, even thou I had removed and verify the client configs were removed. (I know this from the system logs).
Conclusion: After 14 days, I returned it to best buy and going to use the money from the previous purchase on a self built pfsense router.

Keeps shutting down 2.4 WiFI

I contacted ASUS, they determined I needed to ship back my $500 router for diagnosis not giving an estimate of return. This is annoying since I do not have a replacement router to run my household until I hear back from ASUS. So because my router is only having issues with the 2.4 radio I'm keeping it until I can get a replacement router. which defeats the purpose if the other router happens to work better than my most expensive router ever, which is supposed to be the best router ever.

Router doesn't support link aggregation, I spoke to two technical support agents, and was amazed with the fact that they had no literature or knowledge regarding this router. Total disappointment. Returned and purchased a nighthawk x10, and it works flawlessly.
