Issues starting from Sleep and after Shutdown

Had issues with this laptop right from the start. I was hoping that the issues were due to software/drivers, but 3 months later and I still have the same problems. Laptop runs perfectly once it has started, but as soon as it goes to Sleep or is Shutdown, it won't start back unless I Hard Reset it, and/or unplug the adapter, or I have to turn it off/on multiple times.

    Impressive, high-end gaming laptop

This review is specific to the ASUS - ROG Strix 18" Gaming Laptop with the 240Hz refresh rate QHD display, Intel Core i9-13980HX processor (13th Gen), 16GB DDR5 4800Mhz memory, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 with 12GB DDR6 graphics unit (laptop version, obviously) and 1TB PCIe Gen4 solid state drive. Some of the other features this ASUS gaming laptop has are a built-in 720p camera and microphone, dual speakers with Dolby Atmos support, and support for the newer triple band WiFi 6E network connection. As for ports, there are two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports on the right side. On the left side is one Thunderbolt 4 port, one USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C / DisplayPort / Power Delivery combo port, one LAN port, one HDMI 2.1 output port, and one Headphone / Headset / Microphone combo jack. The power port (DCIN) is also on the left side of the laptop and there are no ports other than air flow exhaust vents on the back side. With all of these high-end components and features, it should come as no surprise that this laptop really excels when it comes to performance. It is blazingly fast and responsive and the picture quality on the large 18” QHD display is amazing, especially when utilizing the 240Hz refresh rate. Despite the relatively large display size, I still find the laptop as a whole to be small enough and light enough for easy transportation. Another thing to note relating to its size is the fact that a full numeric keypad is included as well which I really like. On very rare occasions, I need a laptop for work and for me, a full numeric keypad is a must-have as well as a decent-sized screen. This ASUS laptop fulfills both of those requirements for me while also providing an exceptionally smooth experience regardless of whether I am using the laptop for gaming or for work. Speaking of gaming, one of the things that goes hand in hand with gaming when it comes to laptops is the need for a good cooling system. The ROG Intelligent Cooling system is very intuitive and does a great job. Sure, it can get pretty loud at times, but the times when it is the loudest which is while gaming, most people would be using a gaming headset anyways in which case you don’t even really notice the sound. I have really enjoyed my gaming experiences on this laptop so far and do not have any complaints. The other feature that I really love about this laptop is the fact that it not only comes with a 1TB SSD installed, but that it also has space to add an additional M.2 SSD, if needed. With the size of games continuing to grow, it is important to have enough storage space and I really like the fact that this laptop didn’t include anything less than 1TB and that it also has room to expand further. Overall, the ASUS – ROG Strix 18” 240Hz Gaming Laptop is a great gaming laptop with some very high-end components and features and I highly recommend it!

RTX 4000 Series has Major Problems

The Laptop was good. Good screen, decent speakers, looked fantastic. BUT. The RTX 4000 series gaming laptops have a serious flaw that results in massive stuttering during gameplay. I tried a couple other MSI and Lenovo laptops thinking maybe it was just this one, but they all did it. This was as of June 2023 so it's possible this may be addressed if you are reading this now.

    An absolute beast

I'm not too sure what to say, this laptop is an absolute beast. I was able to easily run a variety of games at maximum performance using their highest graphics settings. Playing Forza Horizon 5 using the EXTREME Preset and native resolution, I was hovering around the 110-140 FPS range. Playing Battlefield V with the highest graphics preset and ray-tracing on the laptop's native display resolution I got ~110 FPS. Playing CS:GO on maximum graphics I was getting around ~350 FPS consistently. While playing osu!lazer on the "basically unlimited" FPS limiting setting, I got around 700 FPS! I played several VR games, including Boneworks and Onward, both of which ran at the maximum refresh rate on the highest graphics. The laptop has a 1TB SSD, so you have lots of space for all of your games. The laptop also has an ethernet port, I didn't need to use it but I'm sure lots of people would prefer ethernet to wireless, especially competitive gamers. The laptop only has 2 USB ports so if you have a lot of gear like me, you might need an external USB hub. Some other reviewers experienced very bad screen bleed using this laptop, but I didn't experience any of those issues. The display seemed vivid and bright in my experience. All in all, I don't have anything bad to say about this laptop.

    Wow, great performing laptop

This laptop has been performing great so far for the games I have ran on it. I mainly play first person shooters, but have also played racing, sports, and other games as well. There are a couple things that I will add at the end but those are small and for what you get, I feel this is a 5 star rating. I guess I will just jump right into how this has performed with the games I played. All of the games I tested with this at max settings for each game. Call of duty MW and MW2 both performed with the same performance. I was running from 150fps up to 200fps and depending on what I played, map etc. even ran up to 240fps. I cap my fps at 240 when I can as that is the refresh rate of the monitor. I did not get any freezes/stutters while playing and with this having G-sync did not feel any screen tearing either. This was the case for all the games I played. These 2 are my main games that I play. I will also add that these games utilize the RTX so I believe they run at a lower resolution but then upscale it to the higher resolution. For me, the games still looked great if that is the case. But I am also used to having to play with lower settings. The rest of the games I will just state the game and then average of what my FPS was for those games. Like above, this was dependent on map, what was happening, etc. As well as at times I was also getting more fps. You can also adjust some settings to lower and probably get even more fps. CSGO- 380fps Fortnite- 160fps halo- 200 fps titan fall 2- 144fps (this game only lets you max out at 144 fps and I was easily maintaining that so probably could get a lot more if the game would allow.) flight simulator x steam- 170fps Star Wars jedi fallen order- 144fps (game only allows up to 144) tony hawk- 250+fps Call of duty black ops cold war- 150fps Need for speed heat- 130fps Ring of Elysium- 150fps and lastly GTA5- 185fps These again are all with maxed out settings that the games allow. I use a xbox controller for certain games and that was easy to set up with this laptop. The temperature stayed in the normal expected range even when playing games all day. Monitor looks great and I had no issues with bleeding on the edges. I also have plugged this into a monitor and ran it like a desktop. What I liked was that this laptop picked up my monitor easily and when I went to shut the lid, it swapped to my monitor instead of shutting down. I remember having laptops that I had to go into the settings and choose what to do when I closed the laptop and choose to keep the computer on. On that note, some things I would have liked to have seen. The power button, I would have liked to see this on the side personally. This way if you do close it up and use like a desktop like I am at times, I would like to not have to open the laptop to turn it on. This only has 2 USB-a ports and both of those are on the right side. I would like to have seen a third port as well as avoid as much as possible having to put ports on the right side. If space is limited, I still like to try and use a mouse and I would bump whatever is plugged into the USB ports on that side. I say 3 because right now the 3 things I use all use a USB-A style. keyboard, mouse and headset. I like to not have to use a hub whenever possible. The track pad is more to the left, not even center. I would like to have seen this more to the right side. If I do happen to forget a mouse, I have gamed using the track pad before and it just feels awkward having to use my right hand that normally uses a mouse to have to come all the way under my left hand to use the track pad. On that same note though, it would have been nice to see a mouse included with a mouse pad. I do not know why laptop cases have not done this yet, but it would be nice to maybe have foldable feet on the back side that can unfold to allow the laptop to come up in the back a little which would give more airflow under the laptop. Similar to how keyboards have. Webcam was ok but it's only a 720p webcam. Lastly is the power cord and brick. The brick can get pretty warm. Be cool if they can come out with a way to help keep that cool. The power cord. I feel it is a bit short as far as the part that goes from the brick to the laptop. I feel this should be a bit longer. It barely was able to reach my laptop having the brick on the ground and my laptop was a lot farther back on a table. I feel like most would keep the brick part on the ground. I just feel that they should have swapped the length of the cords so that the longer cord was the one going from brick to laptop. Or made them both long and give plenty of cord length. I did do 1 upgrade for now. I added another TB M2 sata drive. Taking the bottom off was fairly easy. But had to undo 11 screws. On the sides, were the RGB strip is was a little bit tougher to crack open but was able to do so. But overall, those things listed above are small and not too big of a deal. If you are looking at this for gaming, those things are not too much a factor and most other laptops will also have those. It is how this performs playing games and for me, I was able to enjoy all my games so far with ease on max settings. I also things it's a nice touch to have the RGB lit keyboard and the RGB lighting that is on the front. I think this is also a great price for what you are getting.

A true desktop replacement just not on a battery

With any product review there is always a chance you will have problems. How that affects any review will depend on the problem and its final resolutions. Some products may be early to the market and it could be updated during a review. Other times you might have a defect that requires it be sent back to the seller and you hold off on the review. If a replacement comes back defective it should always be noted and the problem fully detailed. If the replacement comes back like expected it might not require further mention. I base that on the replacement experience and my experience with the seller. After a few weeks with the ROG Strix Laptop it failed to boot into windows. I worked with Asus and was provided a replacement. I have had no issues with the replacement. I feel the issue was resolved to my satisfaction. I am very impressed with the performance I have had with the Asus Strix RTX 4080 Gaming Laptop. During my review I traveled for a week and that gave me a good insight on its road performance. First off to get the most performance you will need to be connected to an AC outlet and not running on the battery. The RTX 4080 GPU here is a pleasure to game with and I had no issues with the 240Hz display such as has been reported in some reviews. The colors are uniform without any backlight bleed. I certainly cannot find fault with the Intel i9-13980HX CPU either. On a desk this is workstation level performance. During gaming when the fans are running full speed the noise is much lower than my prior gaming laptop with a 3070 Ti GPU. The keyboard is comfortable and the RGB lighting is well implemented. And for a change I like their Armoury Crate software. Now there are a few decisions Asus has made here that I think could have been better. I don’t know why today we have to have a chassis that is a fingerprint magnet. There are just better finishes they could have used. It's not the worst I have had but they could do better. I would have liked to see 32GBs of Ram as standard at this price level. Also with the size of PC games files today and with the prices of SSDs I think 2TB is the minimum they should have used. The good news is most users can upgrade these parts fairly easily. I am right handed and putting the only Type A USB ports on the right side gets in the way of my mouse. A USB doc can be a big help here. I had gotten away from wireless mouse but I am back in that market looking now. I ran benchmarks with the default power setting. I let the GeForce Experience set the gaming graphics options. My takeaway is you still need to drop your graphic settings way down if you want higher frame rates using the battery. Which really is not recommended. On AC power you're mostly good to go. If you want to take full advantage of the 240Hz monitor you will need to probably run at 1080p and always on AC power. I really think Asus has a winner here. The few complaints I have don’t distract from what's available here. I really think that if you're in the market for a top performing desktop you shouldn’t discount going with this Asus Strix RTX 4080 laptop in its place. If you are looking at gaming laptops you can’t go wrong here if the size is ok for you. If you add up the performance here and this is in your budget I can highly recommend it. It should provide great performance for years to come.

So far so good. 20 days in and so far it's been working great. When you put it on ultra mode it gets quite loud, but there's not much you can do about that with any laptop. Otherwise so far it's been good. One thing that's annoying is all of the software updates from ASUS. They even program it to update the BIOS occasionally which I'm not a fan of. But I haven't had any issues, it's just inconvenient at times.

Asus is a very reputable Desktop, Laptop, and computer parts manufacturer, the Asus ROG STRIX Gaming Laptop is a quality gaming machine, I wouldn’t expect any less. I’m sure everybody that reads my review will be more of an expert not only in gaming laptops, but in PCs in general. I will talk about every aspect of this gaming laptop in a way that is more casual friendly, so here we go: Display: measuring 18 inches, this display is very large, in fact, I don’t think you can easily find a laptop with a bigger display then this, and with a super fast 240Hz refresh rate, you’ll be able to compete with just about any other online player no matter what set up they are using. With an aspect ratio of 16:10 and a resolution of 2560x1600, any game you play on this machine will look crystal clear. Processor: All this is powered by the 13 generation Intel i9 processor, I believe this is the newest best processor money can buy. A processor is crucial, it is basically the brain that runs everything, the better, the processor, the smoother, everything will run, not just games. Not only can this processor play pretty much any game out now, but it is future proof for years as well. 16GB of Ram: a ram is basically short term memory, the more ram you have the less stuttering you will experience in anything that you do on your laptop, games can also load faster, etc. 16GB is more than enough to play today’s games, but if anything is lacking in this laptop, it’s this. most high-end gaming laptops, and PCs feature 32GB’s just to future proof things. More Ram could be added, but I would have someone professionally install it to avoid any Issues as not all Ram is supported. Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 12GB GDDR6 Graphics, basically top-of-the-line graphics card, you will have no trouble playing Any current game, and it is future proof as well. Storage: 1TB Solid State Drive, SSD’s are the Way to go here, they replace the hard drives of old, basically what they do is, there is no moving parts, which makes everything faster and smoother, all in a compact size. What a SSD does is, anything you download get stored here, movies, pictures, games etc etc… the more storage you have the more you can download, 1TB is a lot, you can download big games, hours, and hours of video, and or thousands of pictures. Extras: There are a lot of other features here, a front facing camera, headphone audio Jack, all the newest connections, one USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-C ports, two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports, one Thunderbolt 4, one HDMI 2.1 port, and one microSD card reader. Like I said, everything you need. Conclusion: high end gaming laptop, huge display, overall, it’s a big, hefty laptop, but you are getting some of the best components around, the only thing it’s lacking is that it comes with 16GB of RAM instead of 32, but it’s not a dealbreaker, to me at least.

This is such an interesting product. The technical specs (and price) are out of this world. To start, this is pretty much seems like the best gaming laptop money can buy. A laptop 4080 and an i9-13980HX, this bad boy absolutely breezes through any game. 16GB of RAM is a bit weak compared to the other parts, but not unserviceable for gaming (can be upgraded fairly easily). It ships with a 1TB SSD, which is also fine but, again, not the most space for holding a lot of games, programs, etc., which one would assume is one of the main draws of the laptop. At nearly $3000, you'd love to see them utilize the 2nd NVME SSD slot with a larger drive (2-4TB) to hold games. I don't think the OS drive needs to be that large, but the system ships with an extra slot and this thing already costs insane money. The thermals on this laptop are surprisingly good. I ran the CPU at 100% load for 12 hours and didn't exceed 95C. Same thing with the GPU, although, this thing is very loud and it lets you know it's working hard to move hot air out of the system. And it's also hot. Far, far too hot to ever be used as a true "laptop". Similarly, the spot where it sat on my desk during the thermal tests was absolutely blazingly hot. The screen is a work of beauty. This and the processor are the standout parts on this system, in my opinion. A gorgeous 18" QHD panel with a 240hz refresh rate. It is truly wonderful to game on. My main issue with this product is that, I don't really know what the market segment is for something like this. At such a price, with these features, I think it makes just so much more sense to invest in a proper desktop. The upgradability, thermals, and overall ease of access to system internals is so much better in a desktop system. As I said earlier, this can't really be used as a real laptop, it's far too large and hot. The argument could be made that, perhaps, someone might want to take their gaming rig places, maybe away on business or something. I really don't know. In a couple of other closing thoughts, this didn't ship with much bloatware, which is a credit to ASUS. The RGB keyboard is very nice, keys felt good to type on and an overall pretty nice keyboard. Unfortunately, the RGB needs to be controlled by Armoury Crate, which is bloatware. Truthfully, I'm a bit of a laptop hater and I was blown away by how much I enjoyed, and still enjoy, using this product. The parts/price isn't a terrible value proposition, especially considering how nice of a panel the screen is. But this thing gets hotter and louder than my desktop, who's job it's essentially trying to take. It is really nice, but again, not really sure who I would recommend this product to since it's hard to tell what market segment it's trying to fill.

For example, you can reduce the resolution, the texture quality, or the number of shadows. Rigid Desktop Killer with a Complex Screen

The laptop nails its advertised specs. The 4080 laptop gpu variant in it is faster than a desktop 3080 and nearly twice as fast as the 3080 laptop variants, and is nearly as fast as the desktop 4070 ti. The only downside on the gpu end is it has some nasty coil whine, but nothing that can't be ignored with some noise cancelling headphones. On the CPU end the 13980hx is roughly equivalent to the desktop 13700k, being slightly faster in multithreading but equal in single thread. Combined this machine is nearly unbeatable in laptop gaming performance. The laptop is massive but structurally sound, it's heavy but only as much as you'd expect for the crazy amount of cooling needed and the 18" size. The keys and palmrests feel rigid, though the d-pad and right shift key are strangely located and take adjusting to. The most important review point is the screen - it certainly lives up to the 500nit, 240hz and 1600x2560 specs and looks absolutely huge, but it's also clearly got problems. There's terrible backlight bleed all around the edges with larger patches along the bottom. It's definitely bad enough that if you intend to use this for darker horror games or design work I'd wait for something else unless you intend to use it exclusively with external displays. The battery life is terrible but it's irrelevant, the hardware in it needs wall power to function anywhere close to its potential in any laptop. If you plan to mainly play bright, vibrant games the it's the perfect machine. If you're spending this much expecting perfect uniformity and accuracy in the screen, sorry this one's eaten up too much of the budget on the insane gpu/cpu and cooling system and you'll need to spend more elsewhere to get the perfect display too.
