Basic Computer But Unsatisfied w/ Battery Life

I’m usually a very wordy guy when I’m reviewing products but I don’t think this review will be very long since there’s not a lot to say. I got the VivoBook from Asus based on the brand (Asus is quality!) and how light it was. When it arrived I opened the box and found the usual paperwork, a laptop, and a charging cable. The charger isn’t USB-C like most newer laptops, its the older style with a round metal plug with a hole in the middle. This means don’t lose or damage your charger because replacing it won’t be as easy as USB-C. One of the best features of this laptop is how small and light it is! Just over 3lbs. with a 14 inch screen (hence the 14 in VivoBook 1404VA) you should have no problem fitting this in most any bag you use day to day. I wouldn’t be surprised if women could fit this in their purses. A quick rundown of some of the features are a “physical webcam shield” which is a slider above the screen that shows an orange plastic circle when the webcam is covered, the touchpad is also a 10 key number pad with an on/off option in the top right corner (although without the tactile button press feeling not sure how fast you’ll be able to use this). The screen hinge goes to 180 degrees flat with the keyboard if that’s something you’re into, and the viewing angle isn’t bad letting me see the screen pretty well until it was almost at that maximum flatness. The sticker on the lower corner of the laptop says the VivoBook 14 has been “stringently tested to US Military grade durability standards” which I assume means drop tested but with how light this is I didn’t risk testing that. Ports include the AC adapter hole, a USB-C port, a headphone jack, and two USB-A on the right side and one more on the left near the back, plus an HDMI port. Once you get it charged up (mine wasn’t ready out of the box which is another first) and get through the Windows setup headache you’re presented with a simple laptop made for productivity above all else. This will not play anything but perhaps the most basic games, and then only on minimal settings (I checked Portal, Fortnite, and Minecraft). There’s 8gb of RAM and a 128gb hard drive (only half of which is available to use once you sign in for the first time) so while you should be able to download and use some editing or art programs I am skeptical of how well they’ll run and you’re DEFINITELY going to need an external or cloud storage solution. This laptop is strictly and solidly a typing and researching laptop likely for you to use at school or for business. Which is where my biggest concern with this model lay as the battery seems to last around 4 hours. That might get you through a flight if you’re not going far and its a direct flight but 4 hours isn’t enough for a day at work, a day at school, or much traveling. While the display is nice and bright and the sound is fine you’re not going to be using it for long and that kind of hobbles this laptop for most of your productivity needs if you can’t be near an outlet. I would recommend this for an at home school or work laptop since its small enough to use without taking up an entire counter or table while you work but this is the wrong laptop if you want something to travel for work with or if you go to school and can’t say with certainty you’ll have access to a power outlet to stay charged. I’ve lost 30% battery just working on this review and some emails the past 80 minutes! Play it safe, pass on this one.

      Dear NinjaTard,

      Thank you for your comment.

We appreciate your feedback. Information coming from valuable customers, like you, will help us improve our future product offering and services. The battery life on this laptop is approximately 6 hours of light to medium workloard.
To improve or prolong the battery charged time, please try to do a battery calibration manually. To start with, please drain it completely then charge it fully without using the system. Once fully-charged, please use the laptop, without the AC adapter connected, and drain let the battery drain completely again. Please repeat the charging process thereafter. Also, please verify if the unit is running with the most current system update and third-party battery draining applications are not running if not in used.
Should you need further assistance with the product, please email me at [email protected] and I would be more than happy to help. Or you are most welcome to call Product Support Hotline at: 1(888) 678-3688. Also, you can chat with an ASUS live support agent from the link: https://www.asus.com/us/support/article/1135/.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

This Vivobook is great for basic everyday use like browsing, emailing, and schoolwork. It’s lightweight and portable, which makes it easy to carry around. The screen is clear and bright, and the speed is solid for an i3 processor. Only thing I’d improve is the storage — 128GB fills up quick, so be ready to use cloud storage or an external drive. Overall, great value for the price!

This mini PC is an excellent choice for anyone seeking power and portability. Both the RAM and hard drive are fully upgradeable, allowing you to expand its performance far beyond the original configuration. Its compact design makes it very portable, and with great battery life, it’s perfect for work, travel, or entertainment on the go.

Good value for my needs. I don't need these for gaming, or high-end graphic design etc. - That's not what these things are for. I need small, fairly snappy laptops for use with my event business. I ended up buying several of these machines. They will get used 6-7 times per month for an hour or two at a time. For lightweight windows applications these are just fine.

Have a really pricey gaming laptop for home and work use, but wanted to be able to safely travel with a laptop without too much worry about losing it/breaking it/getting it stolen. This laptop gives a little more than the bare minimum for $250 (when on sale) and could function for an extreme budget gaming laptop if you're interested in that (won't be able to play AAA games but GPU-light indie games will work!). Feels comfortable and efficient, and battery life will last a full workday if you're just browsing the internet or writing in Microsoft Office. My only complaint is the screen is mediocre and isn't bright enough to combat glare issues in outdoor settings on a sunny day.

Light weight, solid build. More ram and faster processor than most at this price. I bought this to have a portable backup to my desktop PC. It runs Office 365 and all the other apps I need. Perfect balance of features and price.

Picked it up at $220 for a tax-free Back to School Deal. I wasn't sure if this was the laptop for me (given the specs), but it allows you to upgrade certain components, which sealed the deal for me. I was able to upgrade this laptop from 8GB to 16GB (dual-channel) RAM and 128GB to 512GB storage. The i3-1315U processor is more than enough for my needs. However, I don't really like the display quality this laptop has to offer. I understand that budget means cutting corners, so beware of this one. The 250 nits are enough for indoor use, which is my work environment. I recommend it for anyone that needs a budget laptop that can be upgraded when needed.

The Vivobook 14 is a good laptop for the price. I was looking for a inexpensive, quality laptop for general browsing and emails and this fit the bill for a good price. More powerful than a Chromebook it is well designed and light. FHD makes it good to look at.

Asus delivers again. Great laptop for the price. Keyboard has good touch & responsive, display is good for the price point paid, battery life beats my newer HP laptop that cost twice as much and is usually dead when I go to use it. Best part about it is the RAM and storage are both upgradeable. While a lot of other manufacturers are soldering on the bare min. RAM and storage for the OS to run ASUS still gives the user the opportunity to expand the RAM and Storage as needed so the laptop isn't useless after 2 years. I refuse to purchase laptops that don't offer the ability to upgrade for this reason.

It works well, easy to set up, clear and easy to see screen and a decent battery life the only thing I don't like is the number-touch pad interface "cross over" button being too sensitive.

The ASUS Vivobook 14 is a great choice if you need a reliable laptop for everyday tasks. The Intel Core i3 and 8GB of RAM make it fast enough for web browsing, video calls, documents, and streaming without lag. It boots up quickly thanks to the SSD, and everything runs pretty smoothly. The 14" Full HD screen looks sharp, and the Quiet Blue color gives it a nice, modern feel. It’s lightweight and easy to carry, which is perfect for students or working on the go. Overall, if you need a simple, no-frills laptop that gets the job done without costing a ton, this one’s a solid pick.

it's a solid choice for budget-friendly, everyday tasks like web browsing and document creation. Key strengths include good performance for its price, decent build quality on higher-end models, and sometimes long battery life or features like OLED screens.

This purchase was perfect for my upcoming semester at college. I was looking for something with enough power to be able to handle my course work in computer science. I enjoy the slim design and slick finish of the laptop. Useful ports make presentations and collaborative work very easy. I thought I wouldn't enjoy the touchpad numberpad, but have found myself using it more than I expected which is a nice surprise.
