Horrible tablet

We owned this tablet for three days and in that time the ASUS updated at least 20 times, and if you left it idle for too long it would shut down completelty and then wouldn't turn back on for at least 30 minutes. Not a good item whatsoever. When I returned the item the cashier at Best Buy even agreed with me that the item is a failure. So why sell it?

Best Tablet Experience Available

This is an awesome tablet experience thanks to windows 8. I have had plenty of android devices in the past including a Nexus 7 and my gf has an iPad 2. The multitasking on this tablet is amazingly quick and smooth. Very easy to learn how to use, took like 3 mins.
I was a little worried about getting a windows 8 RT device, because RT will not run old x86 based programs (like dreamweaver, Visual Studio, Photoshop) but it doesn't matter thanks to remote desktop! That's right its available and very easy to use. The keyboard is just great for trying to get some actual work done, I would not be able to write this review at all without it. I hate trying to type anything more than a few search word on other tablet keyboards. The onscreen keyboard is great too, and can be split for easy typing with your thumbs on left and right of screen. The device has a very long battery life, especially with the keyboard connected. The track pad is great and you can use gestures on it similar to using a MacBook pro.
Some will complain that the app market is small, it is, but there are PLENTY of great apps to use already, and best of all they are all optimized for a great tablet experience unlike many of the android apps designed for a phone and then just stretched to fit full screen. For someone that is purely a consumer and only wants to play games and watch videos, an iPad would still be a good choice (great screen), but for anyone that would like to actually have something that is more than just a toy than this tablet is hands down the best choice. Camera is not that great, but I didn't buy a tablet to take pictures. Still will work fine for video chat purposes. You can even plug in an xbox 360 controller to use with games thanks to the usb port. Added my wireless printer at home in only a few minutes, has great support for a wide variety of printers right out of the box.
At $599 it seems a bit pricey, but the keyboard is included and that makes it a great deal. Also has expandable memory thanks to micro SD card slot. Just awesome all around.

This tablet rocks. Paired with the keyboard it is a great tool for school and for work depending on what you're buying it for. Along with the productivity side, the features for games and organization are awesome too!

The only thing I've been dissatisfied with concerning this tablet is the fact that there is no screen protector or case available (FROM ANY SOURCE) to protect my investment. In my opinion this is very poor planning on ASUS's part for customer satisfaction.

I am not an "early adopter" of any technology. I had been shopping for tablets for over a year. I couldn't get excited about the I pad. The price seemed too high. I love the ASUS. The price was right and it came with Windows RT. Which I love. Still waitng for the keyboard which ASUS is giving away as a promotion through 12-31-12.

This works fine, but it is nothing too special. I could have completed what it was bought for with a 10 times less costly device. However I was upsold by the salesperson.

Keyboard/Docking Station

In reading some of the reviews I wanted to add that the docking station is available from asus here http://event.asus.com/Vivotab/Mobile_Dock/
This is a promotional event and have until December 31, 2012 to submit the supporting information (Serial # cut and photographed with the receipt). It is a great unit, especially for those who still like the chicklet keyboard and functionality of a laptop with 18 hours of battery life. Just remember, this is the RT and not 'full' Windows 8 which means you cannot load legacy applications onto this tablet. To purchase applications, you will have to go through Microsoft's 'App' store.

Well, I'm liking it so far. I'm a little upset that I had to pay 599$ for the tablet and no key board when the news and press review said they would come with both, so I was a little disappointed. There's not to many apps at all, I love gems and there's not to many of those as well. Over all if you want to look for something and there isn't apps for it you have to use the internet browser such as Facebook. Another thing I wasn't happy about was that I bought 32gig tablet and over half is being used by the operating system so not much room. I'm not really sure how I feel but I have a month to use it. I've had apple and android and I feel android has there stuff tether and is far ahead then windows, (so far). I'm an android fan but I love new gadgets. As for the feel and technology in the tablet, Asus did an awesome job. Hope I helped. I would recommend this, maybe just not yet.

Excellent Windows RT Tablet

In terms of hardware, this tablet packs in a lot. The question is: can Windows RT take advantage of all that hardware features. I think Asus' unique design mostly succeeded in showing that Windows RT shines in this package. The combination of touch screen, keyboard, and trackpad makes it a joy to run a variety of apps and programs on this tablet. One can also plug in a mouse transceiver to the usb port adapter for the tablet when it is undocked to get similar effects via a mouse. The central key enabler, I think, is the cursor, which is almost non-existent in iOS or Android. As this tablet shows, touch and mouse inputs can co-exist. For many productivity apps, the combo is very powerful.
The Vivo RT shows many great potentials of Windows 8 RT. At this point, the first few days, I am using this as my device of choice to access a Windows 7 Pro desktop via remote desktop in addition to typical iPad type of tablet usage. Eventually it will probably completely replace my iPad 3 as the number of apps grow. In a way, this is a much better laptop replacement than iPad if one already has a desktop somewhere for the remote desktop app.
I also found that the built-in HDMI port for connecting a monitor is very useful. Just like that in a laptop, a connected 1080p monitor can be used to extend the display or as the sole display. The touch gestures still work the same on the tablet's touch screen even when the display is not being used.
One area that Asus needs to improve on is quality control. The first device I got froze up completely a few times in a day. Every time I had to power the device down and back up to get it to work again. I exchanged that for this 2nd one that I am using to type this review. It has been working flawlessly so far.

Lightweight Windows in more ways than one

I've tried Windows Surface RT and the Vivo several times and think the Vivo is better in my hand. I love Asus' dock far better than either of the keyboards that Microsoft is currently offering for Surface, it's actually usable. The problem is that WindowsRT just isn't ready for prime-time. As an OS, it roughly on par with Android Froyo, but with practically no apps. Worse, it's just as closed an ecosystem as iOS. All this may not be a big deal to many potential buyers as it's being advertized as a business machine that can be used to create real MS Office documents. That is you can as long as you don't need to access documents via VPN. Practically no business standard VPN protocols are supported on Windows RT.
Given all the drawbacks, I'd expect the Vivo to actually be less than the Asus' Transformer Infinity that is similarly spec'ed, but it's actually substantially higher priced.
My suggestion is simply to wait. The Microsoft rep told me that VPN will be coming in Surface PRO some time in the beginning of 2013. When you can have a REAL business machine that is as lightweight as other tablets, it might actually be worth it. I expect Asus to likely offer one of the more compelling options at that time.

I've wanted a tablet for years, I've tried an iPad, I've tried Androids. Nothing gave me the complete package I was looking for. I hoped this Windows 8 tablet would be the answer to my business needs. Well, it's a good attempt but Microsoft locked it down so much that it's not worth it's going price. I can purchase a full laptop for less than half the cost of this tablet, and those do everything this won't.
Biggest Issue: Apps, or the lack of. The way Windows RT is made, you can only use apps downloaded and purchased from the Windows Store. This means no legacy apps. They are pushing you into an iTunes type market but the selection is so slim. No Chrome, no Firefox, no alternative browsers. Basic video games. No FTP, no Windows Media Player, no DVD playback, no Acrobat, no Google apps. Pretty much everything you use on your current PC is not available on their market. In time, this may change but I'm not going to wait on it with my money.
The compatibility of hardware is a joke. Microsoft has a website listing what will/will not work with Windows RT. I searched the website thoroughly prior to me buying the tablet to make sure my hardware would work. I get it home, and the two most important things I would need don't work. I have a HP H470 portable printer. It lists on the MS website as compatible. Plug it in, says not compatible. I have to have Ethernet for work, and I bought a compatible Star-tech adapter. I plug it in, says not compatible. So what's the point of the compatibility website if nothing is compatible. Full on Windows 8 won't have this problem.
The dongle..it's inconvenient. The Microsoft Surface has a full size USB built on the side of it. With the VivoTab, you have to unplug a power cord before you can use the dongle. So no charging if you need the USB port. Plus it's the bottom, it's not comfortable to set on lap if it's plugged in.
15Gb of usable memory. To advertise this as 32Gb is hilarious. There is just over 15Gb of usable space after all the OS gobbles up the rest. This barely holds my music and photo collection, which is another fun part. Windows RT won't play music off the MicroSD card, it has to be on the device. Photos won't list them too, unless as separate device.
Adobe Flash support is controlled. Unless MS approves the website, Flash won't play. This is terrible. Several sites I use aren't supported. I had to follow a special hack to apply each site individually. I shouldn't need a babysitter to monitor my webpages for approval.
It lacks outlook, not supported. Metro apps are just like Android and iPad apps. They aren't anything special.
I'm sorry Microsoft, but I'm sticking to my Windows 7 Pro. I don't like the forced merge to a touch screen system. Hopefully the Nexus 10 this winter will give me something to dream about.

Great hardware with a great OS

I am a former iPad 2 and Transformer Prime user. I got rid of the iPad 2 because it was good for videos and games but nothing productive. I got the Transformer Prime in hopes that would change. The Android OS wasn't very good in my opinion, although I do love it on a phone.
Enter the Vivo Tab RT. I got the Vivo Tab over the MS Surface because the Surface doesn't look like it would work on a lap very well. Who wants a metal kickstand digging into your legs, and in landscape mode it is just a little too wide for my liking. This is why I chose the Vivo Tab.
The Vivo Tab hardware is a notch above the Transformer Prime. The trackpad has a satisfying feel when you click it, and it is very responsive. The tablet is very fast and app switching is faster and easier than on any other tablet I've used. The screen is very bright and the battery life is great. Also, I got a free keyboard dock with mine, but if you didn't you can get one for free by visiting the Asus website.
Windows RT is a very nice OS, but the app selection is limited for now but this will grow. The MS Office that is included is great. And you have much of the power of Windows behind this thing. For example, I quickly found that the built in Windows RT Music player doesn't let you add an SD card as a Music Library source...why I don't know. No problem though, I went into Windows Disk manager and mounted my SDCard to a folder on the internal memory. Windows then saw this as a local folder and problem solved, Music player added it to the library. Now, granted I shouldn't have to do this and most people wouldn't know how, but how cool is it that I could do it on a tablet? It's all the benefits of having a nice tablet with a touch interface, but having more power behind the scenes if you need it. It even has Windows Powershell! Who needs this on a tablet? Not me but it's cool that it is there, just another reason why you could use this as an ultrabook replacement.
Overall I love the simplistic interface, the fast app switching, the touch gestures on Windows RT, and the great build quality and battery life on the tablet. You can use this all day and never need to use the traditional Windows utilities, but they exist in the background if you are a power user and want to use them. If you never saw a use for an iPad you may finally be able to get a tablet that you can do something productive on, and have fun with when you are done.
Oh, and the Apps will come, so I wouldn't worry about that.

I bought mine the first day it was released. I couldn't be more pleased with the tablet itself. I've owned an iPad and the feel and finish are equal if not better. I'm struggling a little bit with Windows RT because some of the mouse operated features don't translate that well to a touchscreen, but I'll trade that for true PC compatibility anytime (no more iTunes). You will appreciate the cursor keys if you have experienced the iPad keyboard, and you will love the Insert key. I thought I was going to have to go with the full blown Windows 8 version and cough up the $140 for Office, but the free version of Office included in RT works great. I may still have to trade up to Windows 8 to get Outlook, but that's the good thing about BestBuy's 30 exchange policy.

Mediocre Tablet

I have had this tablet for over a year and it has back for repairs three times. Most common response to my complaints is to reload Windows, yet I still have horrible Touchscreen response, jerky video, and frequent lockups when streaming video.
The only good things I can say are it does have MS Office suite and provides a good platform for capturing pix. The keyboard is nice since it adds battery life and peripheral expansion.

I bought the Asus as a replacement of my iPad that was stolen. Anyone considering a tablet purchase should check the Asus out. Honestly, I am enjoying the Asus more than I did the iPad. Having a keyboard to type with is awesome. Windows 8 RT is great. Iove, love, love it!
