If you are already well-versed on Van Gogh this film will just be a great, well-made glimpse into a tumultuous period in his life. Let's say that you aren't familiar with his work, this movie will surely give you a peek behind the curtain of history. It's a very emotional and raw film, with great sets/costuming and wonderful direction. It's tough to watch because there wasn't much positivity in his life, its very sobering.

A film about Vincent Van Gogh starring Willem Dafoe as the man himself, Oscar Isaac as French post-Impressionist artist Paul Gauguin, Mads Mikkelsen as a priest, and Mathieu Amalric as Dr. Paul Gachet… yes I was immediately sold. At Eternity’s Gate focuses on the final stages of Van Gogh’s life when he retreats to the small village of Aries. Dafoe truly captured Van Gogh.

William Dafoe was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for this movie. He plays Vincent van Gogh the Artist, and his life. I do recommend this movie for people whom love Art, it is well filmed, excellent acting, and the experience of seeing this film is worth owning.

Great story of the later life of Van Gogh and presented aspects of his life such as cutting off of ear. Always heard it was cut off due an inner ear problem. Van Gogh life was one self-introspect. Viewers will get a better sense of the man.

This was really a good movie about van Gogh and his struggles, but the director employed a "shaky camera" technique which—to me—seriously detracted from the story. Guys, let the tale tell itself.

Watch it and decide for yourself. Do not compare it to the terrible one from the 1950s. Beautifully photographed.

Sad but interesting perspective on life of VVG. Learned a lot about the artist from watching the movie that I wouldn’t have gleaned from reading a boring novel. Good acting by Dafoe.

Like the subject of the movie itself, it is deeply flawed and broken, but also beautiful and unique. Brilliant casting choices and pictorial camera shots are offset by excessive walking sequences with jarring shaky cam work. It can literally be painful to the eyes because of the cam work. Otherwise, a great exploration into the triumph and the agonies of a beloved figure if history, albeit it sometimes stressful and anxiety inducing when focusing too much on his view of the world. A flawed not quite masterpiece.

I have no idea why this movie got so little attention during its theatrical run, but movie-goers now have another chance to catch up on one of the year'smost overlooked films.
