True successor to the Lumia 520

Since the release of the successful Lumia 520, currently the most popular Windows Phone ever, Microsoft have released several budget phones advertised as successors to the 520, from the 530 to the 635. But it wasn't until the release of the Lumia 640 that Microsoft finally released a Windows Phone worthy of being considered a true successor to the 520.
Whereas all the previous budget models essentially just copied the specs of the 520 but with cut corners and compromises (TFT instead of IPS screens, missing auto brightness sensors, etc. ), the 640 not only carries over all the features that made the 520 great, but also builds upon them. An updated processor, higher resolution ClearBlack screen with Gorilla Glass, a full GB of RAM, Miracast support, and a larger battery make the Lumia 640 the only budget Windows Phone worth considering.
If you're currently using the 520 and looking to upgrade, skip the other models and go straight to the 640. Not only does it have all the features of the 520 and more, it's also one of the handful of phones first in line for the free Windows 10 Mobile upgrade in December 2015. Even the bigger selling 520 isn't set to receive Windows 10 Mobile until sometime later in 2016. That alone is worth upgrading to.

This phone has everything needed in a current smartphone -- large clear screen, WiFi, Bluetooth, FM radio, external speaker, removable battery, gps functionality, nfc, front and rear cameras, mobile MS Office, and much more for its price. Only drawback would be the limited apps compared to iOS and Android. This is my first WindowsPhone and I like the live Tiles on the home screen and how you can arrange them. This phone is also unlockable via AT&T so you can use it with other services. There is no other smartphone, comparable at the Best Buy price, to this. Get one before they're gone.

Was looking for a cheap phone to use while travelling. Was hooked on the off line GPS option and also the downloadable maps. Has 4G and a 5 inch screen with some of the best pics I have ever seen at the ~ $60 price range. Takes better pics than most $200 phones

I was looking for a full featured Windows 8.1 smart phone. To my surprise, the Lumia-640 fit the bill perfectly. I spotted this for around $50.00 and had to see what was the catch. Surprise! There is none! A no contract phone for less than most monthly cell phone services. Add up to 128GB, that's right, GIGABYTES of micro SD ram to the phones already large 8-Gb built in memory. With the option to store all music, photos and apps in the removable micro card, how can you go wrong.
Built in LED flash for added contrast in photos, and the automatic multi frame camera shots a MOV clip to get the best picture possible. Make no mistake, the camera works great.
NFC (near field connection) can be used for building access, transferring documents or picture to other with the NFC compatible device, blue tooth that's smarter than I am when it comes to hooking up the care radio, and high speed WI-FI. What have I missed? Oh, right, the same size screen of the popular I-Phone 6S. Replaceable battery. Standard USB charger included. Data sense helps you conserve your data plan if needed. It's on the list for Windows 10 upgrade. When exactly , I'm not sure, but when it is, whoa boy, I'm set.
Double tap the screen and she comes to life. Flip it over and back to sleep. Can be set to ignore callers unless they are on you inner circle list. Those important folks can reach you any time, YOU chose.

Let me start by saying I came from a flip phone, went to a tiny Android 2.3 phone for a few months and since I use an ipad and a PC daily, I'm pretty adaptable and my life doesn't revolve around my phone.
I just want something that makes great calls, texts easily, has a user replaceable battery , takes great photos with a flash, has voice recognition capability all for as close to zero dollars as possible. Yes I'm a penny pinching cheap SOB.
Well for 30 bucks, here it is. Windows phone, great camera, huge sd card capacity and I bought two so I've got a spare battery and actually whole phone as a spare, I couldn't be happier. Unless it could run IOS and android apps too. Which it can't . But hey, that's what mobile internet explorer is for , go to their website and pinch zoom out if you must.
Skype works great on it, E- mail is easy, you can get PDF , word , excel apps and it has has nice loud sound when you need it. Not to mention the free here maps and free here drive apps.
Totally under rated because massive advertising has convinced many they must have a fruit or a robot phone to be happy. Ultimately it's up to you to decide. There are less apps available on windows, but it comes down to what you can live with and how big a phone bill you're comfortable with. At least it's not several hundred bucks every year / time an "improved" model comes out whose accessories wont fit your "old" phone.

Pros:
Windows phone 8.1 is highly optimized and so this phone is very fast even though specs are not as high as others. (speed comparable to a 2.2Ghz 2Gb RAM android).
Asphalt plays very fluid and looks very good.
Screen is big and the resolution is good enough that no pixelation is noticeable, unless you look at the phone closer than normal and focus hard to see the pixels.
Sound quality is good.
Speaker is loud.
Cons:
Some apps don't get updates very often meaning they stay buggy for quite a while, one of them is tunein which has not had an update in about a year or so.
No multitasking for timer apps. I have not found a timer app for this phone that allows me to access webpages etc while keeping the timer running, it seems it's related to how the OS handles app memory, it's just too efficient at releasing app space from the ram.
Screen squares. Even though pixels are not visible in the screen, when reading text in a white background you can see a series of horizontal and vertical lines, I think they must be the touch sensors, this seems to happen a lot with budget phones as I see those with the new moto e when the light hits the screen in just the right way. In these phone however they can get a bit distracting specially when reading something in a white background.

Had a Lumia 635 from last Xmas and picked up this phone shortly after it was released. Much better phone than the 635. Good features for much less price than other phones out there. If you can live in the Microsoft ecosystem with limited app choices, this is a VERY GOOD phone.

Coming from an Asus ZenFone 2 that abruptly died, this phone has exceeded my expectations. I've owned 2 Lumias before (520 and something else), but this one is special. 720p display, insane battery life, perfect size, great audio out quality, etc. Performance wise, it's decent, but I chalk that up to some of the apps being inadequately optimized, especially Spotify. Camera is definitely solid enough for photos in a pinch, enough for me to leave my full frame and crop Canons at home most of the time. Yeah, there's hardly any apps, but who cares? It takes care of the necessities just fine. I love it so much that I'll probably buy another one on sale.

I switched to this phone from a top of the line LG. I was curious to try out a windows phone and I have not been disappointed. Battery life is fantastic and the phone is just about as fast as any top of the line phone but at a bargain price. I do miss a few android apps and the camera could be a bit better. Looking forward to trying the new Windows phone update.

I got this phone for a child to be his first mobile phone. The Windows OS is very straight forward to operate. The phone operates very smoothly and responds quickly. The ability to add additional memory is also a plus. Very happy with it so far.

I have been using windows phone for a while and thought I will test this as my back up phone or emergency guest phone. I bought couple of them during TG from BB and this one did not fail my expectation. As said its a wonderful wonder with enhanced and improved Windows 8.1 ecosystem. Even though there were some apps that were not available in Win store, but the browser version of those sites answered those questions, so I didnt feel let down.
Performance wise it was wonderful, clean and smooth app loading, pic loading and performed more than expected.
Battery life was good too, but did not take it through all the way for the test drive, but I am happy with it.
Overall a wonderful windows phone compared to any 2 tier phones available in the market, sometimes I even feel why does it even a 2 tier phone.
A wonderful wonder

The Lumia 640 was my first Smartphone. I am very impressed with the functionality and quality for such a good price point. Synched right up with my MSN account and I was off and running quickly after contacting AT&T to convert my existing number into the new SIM. Picked up at Black Friday 2015 sale for an awesome price. I had avoided taking the leap into a Smartphone because I didn't want my bill to go up and have to pay the equipment off monthly. With this very inexpensive (yet very functional) phone and the prepaid plan with autopay, the bill only went up about $7/mo and I have unlimited data (before I just had talk and text with a basic phone on a post-paid plan). Learning curve was very low since I was familiar with Windows 8 already. Large clear screen makes apps and video streaming great. Battery life disappoints me a little and the app store is lacking compared to Andriod or Apple, but all the necessities are there and it's overall a very solid phone. I'm really happy with it.

Love using this phone. The good: functionality, voice quality, integration with msoft office and cloud storage, large sd card compatibility, os speed, screen size and quality, battery size, toughness, live tiles and interface design at a very low price point. Camera good not great. The bad: app support from many businesses etc. Had difficulty getting phone unlocked to use on trip to europe. Too bad msoft couldn't get traction to enlarge app universe and appears to have thrown in the towel. I have many of these phones for family members and will continue to use until the phone dies or support no longer meets my needs.

Nice 5 inch phone at this price.
Battery really lasts long.
Light weight.
Bright display.
Ease to hold and operate in one hand.
The only thing is that its having Windows OS :).
Sometimes little bit sluggish, but still better than lots of android
phones available in the market.

I picked up this phone on a Black Friday special because I wanted to give Windows Phone a spin. I have been very impressed with the device and with the experience that I am getting with Windows Phone 8.1. The voice integration with Cortana is better than anything I have experienced on Android, and the integrated HERE Maps include real-time traffic information and are much better than I expected. Microsoft Office integration has been useful and the integrated Health & Fitness app has a built-in step counter that I have only seen on much more expensive phones. Battery life on this phone is great, and I have never run down the battery in a day, even with heavy use of location. I'll keep an Android device handy so that I can access Google Maps for bicycling directions and a few other apps not available on Windows Phone, but overall I am really digging this phone, and looking forward to the upcoming over-the-air update to Windows 10 Mobile.

I got this phone to replace an iPhone. I’ve been an iPhone user since the first iPhone (so this was my first new phone in over 7 years that wasn’t an iPhone) I was just ready to switch. I was interested in the Windows platform but didn’t want to commit by spending the big bucks on a Lumia 950. So I thought for $48 it was worth trying the 640, and if I liked it I could upgrade to the 950 later. I upgraded it immediately after opening it from Win 8.1 to 10 (that may have been a mistake; I probably should have used a little first before that). What I like about it: I can put in a micro SD card to expand the memory, good thing since the phone only has 8Gb; the compatibility with the SYNC system in my Ford car; the built in Office apps; syncing to my Windows 10 laptop. The negatives: it doesn’t have the app selection of iOS devices, but it’s got the apps I use; the phone has this audio glitch that happens occasionally (not sure if this was from the Win 10 upgrade or what) but it recovers shortly after it happens so no biggie; miss the group messaging with all the other iPhone people. But I can look past all the negatives because IT’S A $48 PHONE, and not a $600+ new iPhone, so that sums it up.

I am on the AT&T Gophone no contract, per minute, per message plan without data. Which works for me as I am home most of the time anyway. 5 MP camera takes decent pictures. Put in a 64 GB micro SD card and I have a decent music library for on the go; and stores enough pictures for sharing..........and when on WIFI, the phone is a Windows 10 mini mini computer. Lots of capability and features for decent price.......

Great Screen Resolution, super fast phone, not all the apps are available like Apple or Android. But most basic apps like NetFlix, Amazon, Skype, Skydrive etc... are come pre-install. Great integration with skydrive, facebook, outlook, one note etc... amazing phone for the price. Plastic casing but sturdy screen. Phone has fallen many times but screen has not broken. I guess plastic casing is absorbing the shock much better than iphone. After using the phone for few months. Bought 3 more phones for parents as well to keep a spare phone incase current phone breaks.
