Adapted by Comden and Green from the hugely successful Broadway play, (which in turn was based upon the wickedly funny and very racy for the times novel by Patrick Dennis), the movie crackles with the wonderful quick-witted dialogue that has become a lost art in cinema today. Of course, it didn't hurt to have the brilliant Rosalind Russell in the lead, along with Peggy Cass (reprising her "Tony" award-winning performance), Coral Browne, and the incredibly campy Joanna Barnes. Really, if you are a fan of witty, sophisticated dialogue, matched with performances that, when viewed from the perspective of our times, are the personification of "arch" campiness, then you must have this movie in your collection.

There will never be anyone who can stand up to the talent of Roseland Russel as Auntie Mame, I can't tell you how many times I have seen the movie and EVERYTIME at the end I cry as she assends the stairs with her new little nephew. What a movie....

This movie is about a very happy go lucky woman who inspires her nephew to be as free willed and care free as she is. This movie brings about laughter and tears. I would recommend this movie to any movie buff.

Lucille Ball was no Angela Lansbury in playing Mame. Her singing left much to be desired. The film was greatly helped by the talents of Robert Preston and Bea Arthur. If you loved the movie Auntie Mame and did get to see Angela Lansbury in the Broadway musical you will still enjoy the songs and the story!
