Being a Batman fan, I jumped at the chance to own this on Blue ray. Like the comic book version, Bruce Wayne’s alter ego confronts a Jack The Ripper type villain in 1900’s Gotham City. The animation could have been a little better. However, a well written plot, and being done in 1:75 aspect ratio, made this a worthy addition to my DC collection.

No one is safe in this crime noir alternative universe. Straight out of elseworld stories and into the screen. No one is safe and you’ll be suprised who gets the knife even if you can guess the villian. No it’s not the joker.

Gotham By Gaslight Review Gotham by Gaslight is rated R. This animated Batman films is definitely not for kids and you will know why within the first 5 minutes. The whole movie is made for adults. It is violent and containts sexual conduct. Again it is rated R for a reason. Now since that is out of the way onto the review. DC animated films rarely disappoint and this is no exception. Gotham by Gaslight is a murder mystery set in an alternate Batman timeline. DC comics fans will know this as an Elseworld comic book. This Batman is trying to hunt down Jack the Ripper in a Victorian era setting. With a unique art style and some great voice acting it delivers on all fronts. It is unfortunate that Kevin Conroy is not voicing Batman this time around but Bruce Greenwood does a great job. The story is short but packs a punch as it keeps you guessing until the end. There are some nods to other material that hardcore and casual fans might pick up as well. This is definitely one of my favorite Batman films and I really have no complaints other then wanting more. Gotham by Gaslight is available now on Blu Ray and DVD and it gets a 10 from me.

This is one of the better DC Animated Universe movies. The story and the Victorian style are great and it is fun to see how different Batman characters are used in this time frame. That being said, the animation style is really poor even compared to other DC animated movies. The animation in the included bonus episodes of Batman: the Animated Series and Batman: the Brave and the Bold are much more fluid and detailed than the stilted and less defined animation in this movie. The Blu-ray A/V is good, despite the poor animation. The bonus features are the standard ones for DC animated movies: commentary, making of, bonus cartoons, and previews for other DC animated films. Despite the poor animation, I do recommend this movie!

This was one of the better recent DC animated movies. I bought it because of Mike Mignola's involvement with the original comic. The Blu Ray quality was very good, I would definitely recommend this to any DC fan.

Nice Batman adventure that takes place in a much earlier time period. Story was quite interesting with a plot twist I did not see coming. Animation was good, but not great.

I admit, before this movie came out, I had heard of Gotham by Gaslight but had never read it. When Best Buy offered both the movie AND the graphic novel as a package, I jumped at the chance to get caught up on the comic and the latest installment of the great DC animated movies. I was not disappointed by either one. Bruce Greenwood's portrayal of Bruce Wayne is strong, the adaptation of Mike Mignola's art into this animated movie works really really well, and the expanded story and characterizations are done in a way that is true to the graphic novel, respectful to the characters, and still surprises the audience in the end. Definitely worth the watch and read

This DCAU entry puts Batman in a Victorian Gotham (basically 19th century London). Has a lot of familiar characters much different than you’ve seen them before. Batman is tracking a serial killer whose is terrorizing woman in poverty stricken neighborhoods. It has a decent twist at the end and some good action scenes. Although some complain about the animation, I thought it was decent. I’d put it close to TAS standards. The PQ and AQ are quite good. Extras are average, which is on par with most DCAU movies nowadays. If you’re a fan of DCAU collection, is definitely recommend it. I’d youre new, Id recommend starting somewhere else, such as Red Hood or Flaahpoint Paradox.

Im so thrilled to have this in my collection. I could not wait till this came out and i was able to pick it up. Watching batman in a different era story line just makes me love the creators even more because they are constantly coming up with new storylines to keep more mysterious and just as awesome even when he is based in the 1800 eras.

Watching the behind the scenes where they explain that the source material wasn't long enough for a feature made me wonder, do these films really have to be a certain length? Couldn't this just be a great 45 minute film? Why do they have to add more material when it's just a home video release, not a feature? Anyway, the movie is entertaining. I particularly enjoyed the hand to hand combat scenes with Batman, Catwoman and Jack the Ripper. Though I hate the reveal of who Jack the Ripper really is. I also loved Dick, Jason and Tim as the street orphans.

This is fantastic! As a fan of the original book I love that they just took the idea and did something very different with it. Honestly the original story wouldn't translate well, so this was a very smart move. I really like all the other Victorian takes on classic Batman characters, personal favorite would be the street tough Robins. Also I'm not sure if it's cause of Batman and Catwoman's recent romance and engagement in the comics but I really like seeing these two as a couple more and more in media. The animation is good, the voice acting is great and the action is awesome.

I am a big fan of the DC animated movies, certainly more than the live-action ones and Gotham by Gaslight does a good job of capturing the essence of what made the original comic so great. There are certainly issues with it, namely how powerful they portray Jack the Ripper, especially in relation to Batman. However, this is a minor point and it's just great seeing the Batman character exist in a time-frame and location out of his norm. If you enjoy the character, then you'll certainly enjoy this movie.

Another nice DCU animated film. I enjoyed this one quite a bit. Its nice to see something a little different than what were accustomed to when it comes to the Batman live action films anyways. The animated versions allows some diversion from the norm and its welcomed. This is decently animated, not top notch, but serviceable. It also has some nice special features to dig into and a commentary track. A good well rounded package that should please most Batman animated fans.

Best Buy advertises this as coming with a digital code but conveniently leaves out the fact that Warner Bros. recently disabled codes for hundreds (thousands?) of titles. You can expect any WB movie that Best Buy advertises as “on sale” will have an unusable digital code inside.

this is not a traditional Batman animated movie as it is set in the old times of I believe before the turn of the 20th century. They are familiar characters in different settings including Batman who is more detective in this storyline. Don't want to spoil much but it's different, not modern, but fascinating how they use these characters in a old setting. The ending is also surprising, at least for me it was. Must watch.

Keep in mind that this isn't a 100% faithful adaptation of the Elseworlds graphic novel of the same name. It takes the basic premise of the graphic novel but changes some of the major plot points in it. Having said that, it's still an excellent animated DC movie. Say what you want about DC's current day live-action movies but their animated movies are first-rate and this movie is further proof of that!
