Simple and painfully unapologetic this gut wrenching tale explores how much torment the psyche can take before it breaks. It is one of the best Batman stories ever told.

    A Must for Joker Fans

First off, this limited edition is a great package - the figure and the book alone keep this at a 4 star rating - The Man Who Laughs, although not the basis for the Killing Joke movie, is a great Joker read. I loved the Killing Joke comic - the art alone set the bar high and the Joker's dialogue was iconic - cemented how the character was to be conveyed for decades to come. But the adaptation seems...lazy. Not in the sense that the animation is lacking, nor the voice performances, which are stellar. (Come on, Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy? 'Nuff said.) What I mean is that the producers were so keen on literally lifting the comic to screen that they squandered the opportunity to flesh out the material, and make the movie stand on its own. They assumed their audience were so versed in the lore that the thought of an early skirmish or homage of Batman and Joker's history would be redundant, instead opting to create a prologue for Batgirl instead. That being said, it is still a good view and a must for fans.

If you've heard rumors that the prologue of this movie makes Batgirl out to be a bit too much of a fangirl, I hate to say it, but you heard correctly. The prologue has it's moments, and it's a fun bit of animation if you're a fan of the original animated series. Several moments in it seem kind of awkward, though, so be ready for that. The prologue ends on a note that connects somewhat well to the Killing Joke, but the transition from the prologue's story to the Killing Joke still feels jarring, and it seems something's just not quite right. Once the prologue ends and the Killing Joke begins, though, the adaptation is excellent. Most lines are read verbatim from the comic book. The animation is done differently, but scenes match their respective comic book panels very well. Mark Hamill's performance as the Joker alone is a good reason to watch this film, as he plays his role excellently. Overall, I wish the prologue had been done a bit better, but I still think this movie is definitely worth watching.

I'm a huge Batman fan and have a pretty decent collection of graphic novels including The Killing Joke. I did something I don't usually do and read several reviews of this film before watching it myself. Seemed like most people didn't think it was very good. Furthermore, people really seemed to dislike the first Act of the movie which sets up Barbara's backstory. Any time you have a critically acclaimed book (graphic novel or otherwise), people get highly upset if you mess with the original material. Doesn't matter to those people if the additions are actually good or not. In my opinion, the backstory was nice. We get to explore a relationship between Batman and Batgirl that provides a fresh take on the subject. There's a lot there to give Batgirl/Barbara more weight and importance to the average viewer who doesn't obsess over the comics like me and others do. Things like this are necessary in film adaptations. Films just don't come off the same way as when you read the book. It is especially important for this story since the book is very, very short and without Act one, you'd have a film that's far too short. As for the story itself, it is a classic and is the go-to "origin story", if you will, of the Joker. You will strangely feel a bit of compassion for him. When a writer can make that possible for a complete lunatic, that says a lot about the quality of writing. Please read the book first though. Even though this film does a great job of portraying the source material on screen, the book is the better form of this story. But, overall, I'd give this adaptation a big thumbs up.

If anyone was old enough, 1988 was a very bad year for the Batman. Death in the Family where Robin II (Jason Todd) was seemingly blown to pieces and later, the end of Barbara Gordon's career as Batgirl. The Killing Joke changed the image of just how maniacal The Joker was. The Killing Joke finally introduced fans to the origin of the man who would become the Joker (the graphic novel came out a year before the Batman movie in 1989). The movie closely follows the comic as it can and although the story was a slightly sanitized for the animated movie, it still garnered an R rating for "some bloody images and disturbing content". Animation was in the Bruce Timm style and thankfully not the anime style propagating the cartoon world lately. The movie was very good overall. I was a little disappointed the included hardcover graphic novel was not the actual "Killing Joke" but a nice reprint of "Batman- The Man Who Laughs", originally published in 2005. Although it may seem boring to have the same movie along side the same graphic novel, I would much rather have the newer comic generations be able to compare the original comic to the movie. The included figure was The Joker in his traditional purple suit but it would have been really really cool to have him in his Hawaiian shirt and shorts with a crowbar. But that's just the comic geek in me. Overall, a pretty good Best Buy exclusive with the movie, hardcover graphic novel and figure. Shame that there were so few released in the stores. If you're a full on comic book geek or fan, make sure you reserve your copy ahead of time.

Absolutely love these DC bundles from Best Buy featuring a copy of the animated film, a statue, and hardcover copy of a graphic novel. They're limited edition and feature a number on the bottom of the box personalizing the rarity of the product. I have watched the film version of The Killing Joke included in the bundle and enjoyed it. While I greatly disapprove of the deviations from the graphic novel in the opening act, specifically the romance between Batgirl and Barman. Ignoring that glaring issue I have, the rest of the film is faithful to the source material right up to the infamous and ambiguous ending. As for the graphic novel included, I made the mistake and not checking to see which novel was included in this bundle, so in was surprised to see it's not a copy of Alan Moore's novel The Killing Joke, rather another story titled Barman: The Man Who Laughs. I already own a copy of the book The Killing Joke, and don't own a copy of The Man Who Laughs, so this worked out nicely, but I want to warn any potential customers looking to buy this product that this is the novel included in the bundle so that they're not misled. As for the statue, it's a nicely made plastic figurine of the Joker based on his appearance during the final scenes of the film. Which is very similar to the look used in the comics. In conclusion, I highly recommend you take advantage of the money saving deal and get the bundle of all this wonderful must-have items for any comic book or superhero fan!

Big fan of the original comic and really excited to have this come to the screen. Some people picked it apart but in total I thought it was mostly true to the comic but with a few artistic liberties. Fun to watch though either way.

I remember reading the Killing Joke graphic years ago and enjoyed that batman story. It's simple in that it is a typical Batman vs Joker story, but it is significant as it explains what happened to handicap Barbara Gordon. The dvd is almost on point with the graphic novel, but the first 25 or so minutes of the dvd focuses on Batgirl and how productive she was as Batman's partner. I guess the film makers wanted to show just how productive, lively, and athletic she was prior to her run in with the Joker. After the first 25 minutes, it goes into where the graphic novel begins, with Batman visiting the Joker, etc. I gave it five stars because I thought the filmmakers did a very good job going off of the graphic novel page by page. The first 25 minutes makes a point, which I get, and ultimately shows the shame of how one bad day can change someone's fate forever.
