From the maker of Darkness Falls
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This movie is bad. It's not the worst movie of the year, but it's up there. The one saving grace of this movie is the fact that Aaron Eckhart is actually a talented actor, albeit he's playing a character you can see in any other war film. That's essentially what this movie is: every other war film, but with aliens! You have your deep depressed guy that has a troubled past, the guy that holds a grudge against him, the gung-ho strong female that will eventually get accepted as equal amongst men, the other girl that's kind hearted, amongst the other stereotypes. There is no characterization outside of some brief bouts of dialogue, but it's all irrelevant because the tension between characters is forgotten most of the time. The plot is like any other alien movie: Aliens come down for some arbitrary reason, blow things up, and a small band of people have to go in and stop it. Granted it doesn't start out with that as the plot, but that's what it turns into. Of course there's one main weakness and the heroes find it. There's no surprise in this movie because you can tell who's going to die from the onset, which makes you not care when they have a "touching" moment. The cinematography is probably the worst part of this movie. I could've dealt with a clichéd plot and characters, but the constantly shaking camera is annoying. It never stops moving. A guy's in a graveyard talking to his dead brother and the camera man is acting like he's having a seizure. When things start happening the camera constantly zooms in and out and shakes so you can't make much of anything out. Ironically the only time the camera really slows down is when the characters are in a helicopter. Essentially watch any POV movie and that's what this is like. Finally you have the length. This movie is unnecessarily long. Two hours feels like three when you realize you're really watching the same action scenes over and over again with the same shouting dialogue and people yelling "Go, go, go, go!" At least Cloverfield had the good sense to be less than an hour and a half, regardless of whatever else you can say about it. This movie just drags, and it actually kind of reaches an end, then just continues on for another 20 minutes. This essentially plays out loosely like ID4, with the total focus on the military. I did actually want to like this movie. I have a soft spot for aliens and the cover alone made it look awesome, but in the end it's just bad. It might be worth $10 on Blu-Ray if you have nothing else to waste the money on and just to watch it on a full-hd screen. Even that's a waste.
