I feel that this album has been unfairly neglected in the Beatles canon. The vocal harmonies are stunning and George's guitar playing is great. I especially like his rockabilly playing on the two Carl Perkins covers; Honey Don't and Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby. Outstanding! Each of the cover versions blow away the original versions; especially Paul's treatment of Kansas City/ Hey Hey Hey and the group vocals on Buddy Holly's Words of Love. The eight original songs are each excellent in their own right. Looking back from over 5 decades it's not obvious how new these songs sounded back in 1964. The Beatles were in the process of changing their direction and their trademark sound and this lp emphasized that fact. The Beatles had changed. When this album was first issued on CD, their producer, George Martin, felt that the stereo mix was below modern standards and so it was released in mono. I think that the remastered 180g vinyl pressing of the album proves him wrong. My opinion.

The Beatles were never confined to a single genre of pop music. This album is a great example; cover versions of r&b greats Chuck Berry, Little Richard & Dr. Feelgood; cover versions of rockabilly great Carl Perkins and an excellent cover of a great Buddy Holly song. All this and eight top-notch Beatle originals. Love it.
