I have never owned an air fryer but friends that have them rave about them so I thought I would give one a try. I am a single guy and sometime it’s tough to make a casserole and then have to eat it for four days so as not to have to throw food away. By the way I am not a big fan of leftovers. The unit came very well packaged and after opening the box found a very attractive counter top appliance. It is a combination of gloss black plastic and polished stainless steel. It measures approximately 11” wide X 14” deep (allowing for the handle on the basket and what appears to be a handle on the back) X 12’ high. It is the perfect size for my counter top and matches my stainless steel toaster that sits next to it. To get started, I am one of those guys that when I get any new device, I always read the owner’s manual front to back including the warnings and cautions. One thing I noticed was a term I had never seen before referring to plasticizer. Since I was not familiar with this term, I immediately started doing research to see what this was and what I found was that it refers to the possibility of an air fryer producing enough heat from the bottom of the fryer to damage or discolor your counter tops. I found the best solution to avoid this was to use something under the fryer such as a temperature resistant silicon pad. Not willing to take a chance I bought a 24” x 16” silicone mat. The other thing I noticed in my research was a number of people having issue with the difficulty in cleaning the basket so I bought a silicone insert for the basket. Both of these have been great additions to the fryer although probably wouldn’t have needed the mat, more on this later. As for the fryer. The control panel is on top of the fryer and has multiple cooking and warming options including air fry, roast, broil, bake, reheat, keep warm, dehydrate and French fries. In addition, there are controls for the menu, power, start/pause, temperature, time and light. When you first plug the unit in it defaults to the air fry option with a preset 400 degrees and the light on. In order to access the other cooking options, you have to toggle to them using the menu button. Each option has its own preset temperature. The fryer is described as being see through and this is probably the coolest feature of this fryer. There is window above the basket that allows you to see into the fryer while it is cooking and the light button allows you to turn on a light inside the fryer to see what is going on. This is the only fryer I found that has this option and can’t believe more don’t have it as it is a great feature. The other thing I found during my research had to do with some people found fryers give off a smell so I ran the fryer empty at 400 degrees for an hour to get rid of the off gases. It did produce a smell of off gassing during this period and I ran my air purifier and had the sliding glass door open to eliminate the smell. After doing this there is no smell and no effect on the food. During my research and being a first time user I found one of the most common uses for the fryer was French fries so I bought a bag of my favorite crispy frozen fries to test the unit. It called for 20 minutes at 400 degrees shaking half way through the cooking cycle so I loaded fries into the fryer and set the air fry function for 20 minutes. The fryer is designed knowing you should shake or turn your food half way through a cycle so it automatically stops at 10 minutes in this case and the display says turn. So, I shook the fries and re-inserted the basket which then automatically turned the fryer back on to complete the cycle. I watched the fries through the window and decided at 19 minutes I would try them and they came out great. This is a pretty powerful fryer. I have found it takes a little less time than some recipes call for. Just have to experiment and get used to it. The next thing I tried was frozen chicken tenders which I really enjoy and again they came out great. The chicken calls for 12 minutes at 360 degrees so the next test was to put in the chicken and fries at the same time since I figured the chicken would get done on time and the extra time for the fries at the lower temperature would have everything done at the same time and it worked perfectly. After reviewing a number of recipes on the internet, and there a ton of them I decided to try fresh potatoes so using a recipe I found I made baby red baked potatoes and they came out awesome. I am really looking forward to testing out some other recipes I have found. Regarding the mat I bought, after cooking multiple foods at 400 degrees I checked the bottom of the fryer and it wasn’t even warm to the touch so I probably wouldn’t have needed the mat. The outside of the fryer only gets slightly warm around the basket and the air that vents out the back isn’t very warm either. The one thing you need to be aware of is that the basket when you remove it is VERY hot so the mat may be a good idea for placing the hot basket on. I had a 12” granite trivet that is the perfect size for the basket and that is what I am using. This is the perfect size fryer for a single person or 2 but could probably be used for a larger family. I have not gotten used to how much food you can put in the basket at once so it’s hard to tell how many people you could cook for. As I get more food ideas that I can use this fryer for I am sure it will be my go to cooking appliance. Much healthier due to the lack of need for oil or limited oil compared to deep frying and no need to heat up an oven just for small portions. Saves time, energy and is really fun to use. Being my first experience with a fryer this is a great product, built well and very attractive. I would highly recommend this fryer if the size fits your needs.

I bought this air fryer on sale. Within the first week it started to not power on. I thought at first it was a sensor indicating the pot wasn’t clean. I went to clean it and put the pot back in. The display remained saying pot. I really wanted to like it but i might have just got a bad one

I took the tray out to clean the Air Fryer (Bella Pro Series 5.3) and there is a metal piece on the top of the inside that is as sharp as a razor and exposed, which I sliced my hand wide open on. There should be a guard or something on this piece of metal. This is not ok. The only reason I didn’t need stitches is because I happened to have a high quality surgical glue on hand, left over from a major surgery. They need to recall these. Someone is going to get seriously hurt.
