    Better watch Saul

Disclaimer: I loved Breaking Bad, thought it one of the best shows ever created. "Better Call Saul" is an entirely different show, though. It works on its own, and that is no small feat considering its heritage. Much like "Breaking Bad" moved a little slow in the beginning, it takes time to sink into "Better Call Saul." I think the defining moment came for me this past week -- hence this review -- when we see Saul in a garbage dumpster salvaging shredded documents, telling another attorney he's "at the opera." Saul has come into his own: if Walter White became a great anti-hero when he blew up Tuco's office with explosive "meth," Saul's become the great redeemer of every working day Joe attorney who gets attorney jokes. There's something poignant and funny and heartbreaking in watching Saul's evolution, the everyday moral dilemmas he faces, to be a good guy and forgo the professional accolades, or to become the caricature of all the bad lawyer jokes. Ironically, Saul chooses his humanity, and yet becomes the quintessential type for the jokes. "Breaking Bad" dealt with timeless moral dilemmas, a modern Macbeth for the small screen; "Better Call Saul" proves more compelling in its subtlety, irony, and pathos. Rather than being hit over the head with mortality's moral dilemmas, we see Saul dealing with the banality of mediocrity, and trying to overcome it. There's no Shakespearean grandiosity here: rather, this is a modern moral literary tale, subtle, and without any answers. If the show continues with this level of writing, acting, and production, it will become a classic in television history.

He wasn't always Saul Goodman, ace attorney for chemist-turned-meth dealer Walter White. Six years before he begins to represent Albuquerque's most notorious criminal, Goodman is Jimmy McGill, a small-time attorney hustling to make a name for himself. He's a forceful champion for his low-income clients, an underdog whose morals and ambitions often clash. Jimmy works with private eye Mike Ehrmantraut, a former Philadelphia cop and recent transplant to the Southwest. Mike has a specialized skill set -- he's a "fixer" of sticky situations -- that Jimmy soon learns to appreciate.

    Brilliant prequel to Breaking Bad

When I heard that the plan for a follow-up/sequel to one of the finest TV shows of all time, Breaking Bad, was to be a prequel featuring sleazy lawyer Saul Goodman, I thought, this is surely going to be a bomb. Fortunately, they dropped the idea to make it a 30-minute comedy, and the result is a show that is nearly as good as the original. Vince Gilligan has done a superb job putting this show together, with just enough members of the original cast, and many great new actors. Great fun and suspense, learning how Jimmy McGill became Saul Goodman.

When the creators of “Breaking Bad” announced that they were creating a spin-off prequel series focusing on none other than Saul Goodman, I was as skeptical as anyone. This should not have worked, but actor/producer Bob Odenkirk is brilliant, so talented in a comedic and more dramatic role. His backstory is arguably more fascinating than Walter White’s, and the editing has been improved since the original show. I could go on about the fantastic performances, writing, but I won’t. Instead, I want to say that this is quite well-packaged, even though I feel the discs don’t need to be stacked on top of each other. If you’re a fan of Breaking Bad, or just great drama, you should check this out!

This is one of the best TV shows currently on! A great first season that's a interesting character study but with a dark sense of humor. Never boring, great performances, beautiful cinematography and clever writing. The blu-ray is great; top tier picture & sound, and special features have cast and crew commentaries for all episodes, including Easter egg features. Highly recommended! Excited for season 2

Agh! This show is amazing and the packaging for this season is nice and clean. Such a great deal this week! My only gripe is that Best Buy puts their white stickers on the upper right hand corner of almost all of their blu-ray slip covers and they're often times impossible to remove the stickiness. I had no problem with this one however. Thanks!

I thought going back to Breaking Bad well was a terrible idea to one of the most perfect dramas of all time and ended brilliantly. Why mess up a good thing? Then I started to wonder it was the same creator wanting to do it and I trusted his craft and the actor he chose to continue a prequel to a beloved character. And boy did he pull it off. Can't wait for Season 2. A definite watch if you like the Breaking Bad style.

The show itself is gripping and original, much like "Breaking Bad." There are several special features on the blu-ray version spread out over the 3 discs. My favorite feature is "In Conversation: Bob Odenkirk & Michael McKean" on disc 3. The episode commentaries go over the differences/similarities between "Breaking Bad" and "Better Caul Saul" and feature different actors and staff members for each episode.

Worth getting caught up in this series - don't miss a minute of this newer one. There are so many series out right now and this one is good. It's yet another like Downton Abby, Homeland, or House of Cards, gets you caught up in the story, and can keep you hooked. Have fun watching and start with a binge-watch weekend. You'll have fun and get caught up with the story quickly.

I was a huge Breaking Bad fan, so when Better Call Saul came out I eagerly watched the first season! I actually love it MORE than BB. Since you can't watch it on Netfkix, my husband bought me the DVD set for Christmas--I love it and we've already watched the entire season again! So excited for Season 2!! This set is worth the money.

I was a fan of both BREAKING BAD and Bob Odenkirk (from Mr. Show with Bob and David). I did not see how they were going to make a great show on the secondary comic relief character. Not only did they achieve something extraordinary in it's own right, they also added a lot of depth to an otherwise throw away character in Saul.

Compared to Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul is slower paced and more dialogue-oriented, which is an adjustment for the audience, but it is still a very enjoyable show. That slower pacing really starts rolling in Season 2 and things become quite suspenseful. We very much enjoyed it and look forward to next season!

This show was a slow starter for me, I felt at times like someone please stick a needle in my eye and put me out of my misery, but that was the Breaking Bad part of my brain doing the thinking. I watched the first four episodes over and I get it Saul is growing and finding his place. I like it.

I loved Breaking Bad. The writing and acting on that show was superb (In my opinion, only equaled by The Sopranos). I bought The first season of Better Call Saul, without having seen it. So far, it does not disappoint!!!

Great show, super well done and amazing acting by all involved. At least as well put together as the predecessor it spun off from. In the beginning we see a black and white flashback of Saul after the events that landed him on the lamb from Walt's shenanigans, I WANT MORE PLEASE!

I'd you loved Breaking Bad then you'll love Better Call Saul which is a prequel/spin off of Breaking Bad. Bob Odenkirk is phenomenal in this role. He's super funny yet also very smart. The story is smart and at times hilarious. Very well made show and the perfect spin off to BB.

Breaking Bad was one of my favorite shows and this just helps you understand how Saul came to be who he is. I really like it. Love all of the background and history it gives. It shows that he used to have a heart too before he became Saul Goodman, when he was still Jimmy McGill

There's so many layers to this show. BB fans will instantly know a few characters, as Mike, Tuco & his special relationship with his grandmother. There's numerous questions, esp. surrounding Jimmy's personal life that adds an odd, edgy mysterious tone. Enjoyed every second.

If you're a fan of Breaking Bad and want to see how Jimmy became Saul, this is the beginning of the story. One of the most well written shows on TV that keeps you anticipating the next episode. With this, you can binge watch on a show that was meant to be viewed that way!

If you enjoyed Breaking Bad then you owe it to yourself to check out Better Call Saul. Writing is just as good, some of the new characters are just as deep/involved, and the characters from BB that appear here are great (ie, Mike). Well worth the time/money.
