Was never much of an AIC fan in the earlier years, but I've been catching up on their stuff and this one - despite no Layne Staley - is a great place to start.

I absolutely loved the cd prior to this one so I had high expectations. I don't think it's as good. It still is a decent album but the bar had been set so high w/ the previous one. It's still alice in chains so you can't go wrong, but maybe preview before you buy...

Jerry Cantrell leads Alice In Chains with new singer that sounds like he is channeling Layne Staley from the grave.

    A must-have for AIC fans

After a 13-year hiatus, Alice in Chains is back with a vengeance. Their newest offering serves up the unmistakable groove and flavor of old-school AIC. There are no throw-away tracks here: it's obvious the band poured its heart and soul into every song on the album. Tracks like "Check My Brain" and "Lesson Learned" harken back to the days of FACELIFT and DIRT, while others are reminiscent of (and even build upon) their later albums. While Layne Staley is sorely missed, William DuVall's exceptional vocals will occasionally make even hardcore fans forget that it's not Staley singing them. It only becomes evident during the quiet solos where Staley's raw emotion is noticeably missing. I don't think anyone can fault him for that, and it's certainly not a deal-breaker. 4.8 out of 5.

    Alice In Chains Delivers!

If you have been able to wrap your head around the fact that this band has chosen to soldier on with a new frontman than you are ready for this record! The songwriting is top notch and EVERYONE comes out swinging with a solid knockout blow! Very few bands can carry on without thier lead singer and still have something incredible and valid to offer. The whole record has a blend of Chains from the past but at the same time it covers new ground. As a guitar player I love the fact that there are riffs and melodies that I've never heard before! That in its self is a rare thing today in music. The vocal harmonies are natural and pure, Cantrell and Duvall have voices soothe and attack the soul as needed. Each singer has dominent moments & Duvall proves he is as much a part of this band as anyone else. Sean Kinney and Michael Inez hand out some cool groves on thier end are not a back drop for what some may have thought of as a "Cantrell Solo Project". These guys ARE a band and worked hard on this record! This gives all of us a reason to actually go out and buy some cool new music!

    Good solid, post-Lane effort

The album is very good with solid tunes throughout most of the album. I was pleasantly surprised that the new singer sounds remarkably similar to Lane Staley even though I wish they would have branched out into a new sound. My problem is that even though he sounds like Staley, he can't match Staley's angst and so he comes across as flat. In that regard, I would say that if you can't match him perfectly, don't try to match him at all. It is only going to further negative comparisons. It is not a good enough album to make me keep it in a constant rotation, but I will revisit it often enough to have made the purchase worth it. You probably won't be disappointed, but you won't be impressed either.

    Is that Layne Staley?

I bought this CD twice! one copy for me and one copy for my dad, that's how good it was! I Honestly thought it was going to be a flop becuase bands usually don't do very well after a singer is lost, but I can say that Black gives way to blue is probably one of AIC's best albums. It really sounds like they picked up where they left off, I totally recomend this to anyone who likes rock, metal, or grunge.

    classic alice in chains style

has a definite Alice in chains "vibe". New lead singer is very good and melds with the rest of the band quite well, but it's not Lane. if you like Jerry Cantrells classic guitar riffs, you'll love the album. If your looking for it to sound like Lane, you'll be disappointed. All in all I think it's a good listen.

Each and every song on this amazing album is beautifully composed by only the greatest band ever! 'Black Gives Way To Blue' contains a nice mixture of heavy and subtle tunes that remain true to the Alice in Chains sound!
